  • What is Dripping out of Crying Obsidian? The answer might shock you. There is some weird purple substance leaking out of crying obsidian in Minecraft.
Crying Obsidian was added in Minecraft 1.16 and is used to craft the respawn anchor. Check out my "What is Netherite in Real Life?" video as well.

Who's to say it was there the entire time? It could be a natural property of Obsidian, or possibly similar objects, to open gateways like that when given a closed surface, like a bubble.
Based on the state of the portals, it could be theorized that something happened at some point to violently shut them down. Of course, that doesn't explain why directly shutting down a portal by mining it doesn't produce Crying Obsidian, but that perhaps it requires a truly violent 'power surge' to make happen.
Alternatively, these portals were lit, and then abandoned, forgotten for years, potentially centuries.
Over time, it seems small bits of the Nether was able to leak through. Given that this doesn't happen to our own portals, with the exception of creatures coming through, we might assume that this takes an extremely long time to happen, or something else strange went on to cause it.
Over the course of this time, the Obsidian was able to absorb the energy of the portal's threshold. After a while, it seems the structure around it became unstable, and possibly collapsed, taking parts of the portal with it.
When this happened, it could have hit bits of charged Obsidian, cracking it and making it leak the energy it had absorbed.

I think the ,,portal juice" comes from the nether portal not from the inside of obsidian. I think the obsidian just have a magical property which will used when u use a enchantmentable or activate a nether portal. Therefore i think that the nether portal secrete a liquid which adheres on the obsidian. But this juice is corrosiv. The way obsidian is made is by using lava and water, you only need a bucket of each though. When the ancient builders built the ruined portals, they kept valuable stuff near them so the others can see what they have found through this particular portal. Once they were gone, the portals were still lit, causing some obsidian to suck the power into itself. This makes the energy stuck, and since there is to much when you try to light a portal with it there is already to much power so it can't light the portal. The reason why the respawn anchors have the mini portal is when the glowstone can separate the power in the crying obsidian. Making the mini portal that has an abundance of power which is used to respawn people in the nether.

I think that in ruin nether portals, since they havent been used for a long time, the obsidian starts to combust and disappear, which is why parts of the ruin are gone. The obsidian sucks up the portal juice, so that it doesn't combust. Since the obsidian is too small to hold the whole portal inside, it gets cracked since it is full to the brim, and it starts dripping out. And as you know, only certain blocks on a ruin are crying, becuase the others either didnt suck up the portal, or the portal juice dripped out of them

The crying obsidian in the ruined portals used to be normal obsidian and the ruined portal used to be a normal portal but when the ancient builders built the portals a long time a go the portal wore out after a long time and absorbed the portal inside it therefore becoming crying obsidian, and the missing blocks inside the ruined portal wore out completely and not given a chance to absorb the portal inside it and that's why when we make a respawn anchor using 6 crying obsidian it forms a mini portal on top of it

Is the portal juice linked to that one mysterious element? When you put certain special minecraft materials in the material reducer, you get an element labled "??". The texture of this element features a black background with particles the same shade of purple as portal juice. Perhaps this portal juice is what gives these materials their special properties. Also, I think obsidian has no portal juice to begin with, but is good at holding magical energy, causing the energy from the portal to stick onto it.

My theory is that when the ancient builders built this portal, they had basically abandoned it because they thought that if there is gold, quartz and ancient debris in the nether there must be other exclusive materials too. They kept mining away but didn't even think of the dangers such as the Ghasts, Pigmen, etc. After a long time they decided to return but couldn't remember the last known location of their portal (exactly like me) and were killed by the monstrous creatures of the underworld or as Game Theory suggests, infected and turned into Wither Skeletons or similar. An extremely long time later, few obsidian pieces started absorbing the portal's energy. As they were absorbing this otherworldly energy, they started becoming highly unstable and started cracking open. Fortunately, before the pieces exploded, the portal energy was fully absorbed but that meant that the portal couldn't be lit up again as the cracking obsidian cannot contain the energy of the portal and is too unstable to form the whole structure required to light the portal. And maybe, when we craft a respawn anchor and put Glowstone in it, the portal energy is starting to evaporate as the Glowstone was taken from the literal depths of hell and it is EXTREMELY hot. This makes the crying obsidian more stable. How do I know it gets more stable? Well, if you notice, the obsidian pieces around the portal texture and the glowstone container of the respawn anchor is comparatively less cracked and leaks out less portal energy then other parts of the respawn anchor.

Theory: Osidian cracks do to repeated thermal extension. Nether portals and respawn anchors ignited using heat.
You can't light a nether portal in the End because it's too cold and windy there

Idea: what are that lights that spawn when you kill the dragon?
    Or
What are the END gate ways??
    My theorie:
The juice is there beacuse of the mixture of lava and water aka hot and cold , somehow the lava contains little of that juice in it , and when its mixed with a liquid in this case water it hardens and is "stored" in the obsidian . When you build a nether portal the "magic " sucks it out to build the portal .
That needs to be STRONG beacuse you literlly go thru dimensions.
After the activation the portal is opened .
The juice is stored in the obsidian which Means if the portal is opened for to long it Will break the obsidian .
Which Will lead to the juice to pour.
Its then usselus beacuse the juice needs to be stored in some way for it to not leak.
The juice is REALLY STRONG beacuse its made from lava.
Then when it leaks on other obsidian it breaks there own obsidian shells.
When it breaks the power of the portal is corrupted which brings some lava and netherrack to the overworld.
The portal then breaks for ever unless the juice is re-stored aka the obsidian is back.
    That is my theorie :)

I think how the portal juice got in the obsidian was, overtime with the portal constantly being on it started to become unstable. Some of the portals essence was infused with the obsidian. The part of the portal with missing obsidian is obsidian that absorbed to much portal essence causing it to move to the other dimension hence why there are random pieces of obsidian around the portal. The obsidian that's use in enchantment table is only used to keep it (and the enchants) stable rather than create enchantments. Which is why you can use normal obsidian that wasn't used in a portal to make an enchantment table.

My theory is that the purple stuff is actually the portal slowly corrupting the obsidian until it breaks down and becomes unusable for a proper portal. It works for respawn anchors because it appears to be a more intricate machine utilizing this corrupted substance to allow the player to stay within the end. The glowstone as power source is to stabilize it enough for the machine to contain this corrupted substance.

I got it, The obsidian isn't magic but when you surround it and put a light source in the middle it makes a portal just like the recipe the glow stone is in the center of the crying obsidian which was worn off by being a portal for so long and how the juice got in the obsidian is from it absorbing the portal and maybe the reason there are so many ruined portals around the world is because the ancient players had to find a different location to build a successful nether portal trip. Then the players came to make a big bastion to share peace with the nether mobs but then the piglings stole it and after the years it cracked that's why when you get the achievement it says the good old days. And the good old days is when it used to be peaceful between the old players and the piglins also since the piglings and the old players used to barter gold and wear gold armor together thats why they don't attack you wearing gold armor. wow when I started writing.LOL

My theory: When you traverse the purple field you are send through a separate dimension into the Nether/the overworld. This is why the transport isn't instantaneous. The portal builds up some form of energy in its "event horizon" (the purple field we walk through) from that dimension. This energy is slowly absorbed into the to obsidian around it. At some point the obsidian begins to crack and drips out a parts of this other dimension. If you continue to use it beyond this point, the obsidian cracks or even explodes, which is why there are parts of the portals missing. We, as the player, can't observe this because it takes many many years to reach the point. However, after the ancients that build these gates disappeared no one was maintaining these gates that simply continued to stay active until the obsidian shattered and leaves us with this partial portals.....

now this is what i though the obsidian absorbs some of the energy from the portal so it can hold all that energy so im guessing it cracked open and some of the portal juice is leaking out but also did you notice its kinda similar to what a sponge dose when it absorbs water so from that information i can just guess the obsidian can absorb the portal juice like a sponge but also from the new re-spawn point you can use. that means some of the obsidian still has some of the portals energy witch means possibly in the future of minecraft maybe they'll be more use full things for the crying obsidian but maybe the creators of minecraft will eventually let us use some of the portal energy for potion that may lead to teleporting to new areas or maybe the nether or end or some of the bi-oms in minecraft

My theory of how obsidian has portal juice:
When lava the red/orange liquid and water the blye liquid merge together it makes a purple liquid which hardens. (Like peiple melt and refreeze to make a shaoe out of metal) the purple liquid becomes the energy of obsidian and when exposed toi heat it can't hold its energy back and releases it to make the portal.

Natural obsidian has air pockets/bubbles inside of it. Nether portals happen in voids between blocks of obsidian it stands to reason that the same thing happens on a smaller scale inside of the blocks themselves, tiny portals form inside of the bubbles within the obsidian blocks. Over time the energy flux at the event horizon cracks the stone and the purple glow within the stone may actually be active portals. SO the stuff leaking from crying obsidian is probably some sort of condensed form of portal particles, which would by extension consist of matter which passed through the other side but wasn't able to re-materialize properly. The primary flaw with this hypothesis is that there is no discernible "other side" at least if there is it's not in the nether.

A small interesting thing is that the animation of the nether portal texture on the top of the respawn anchor is in reverse. This isn't much, but it is fun to think about. A pretty logical explanation is that you use a normal nether portal to travel to the nether, meanwhile the respawn anchor is used to bring you back to its location when you die.

If you look at the different particles in minecraft that relate to magic they all have something in common, the are all purple, eg enchanted items, dragons breath, teleportation trail of enderman and the portal to the nether, what if instead of it being broken, what if it was overflowed with magical energy to a point where it fractured, since the whole block of obsidian is a really stable substance, ‘high blast resistance, needing a diamond pick to break etc’, so since it isn’t stable on its own it can’t be used to make a portal until it is stabilised, glowstone could be the stabiliser as that would explain you having to recharge a respawn anchor and make it using glowstone in the crafting recipe itself

  • @Megthep3p

This was a really good question and I agree with your conclusions that there is portal juice/substance inside of obsidian. Something I'd like to think of though is either did these portals break down over time (like you propose) or maybe something broke or disturbed them. Whenever I look at crying obsidian's name during this, I saw the normal way which is its appearance, but it could also represent crying from suffering or sorrow. Now there is the popular theory that something catastrophic happened with the old players long ago in MC's world, so maybe this catastrophe not only broke the world on a physical level, but also on a dimensional one.
Crying Obsidian and the state of broken portals may be cause by that great disturbance and caused them to break down and the power or state of some obsidian to show a scar/rift of sorts. Now this can be caused by age as well, but it wouldn't line up with a suffering or sorrow aspect as much.
With the respawn anchor, it could use the glowstone as energy and also as the actual anchor (using the focused energy to stay stable) and the crying obsidian's dimensional access to achieve its effect. Although then you have to question why regular obsidian can't do this, and that may be due to the crying version to be more unstable or another feature.
My brain is going a bit out of it now, so I'll stop here lol. Hopefully you liked this brainstorm and thanks for reading it

The "portal juice" is just a chemical we don't have in our world that has interesting physical properties. It is a bi-product of a compound that forms through chemical reactions that occur when lava (which has a different chemical makeup and is actually far cooler temp-wise than rl lava) is supercooled, crystalizing into solid obsidian.
When obsidian is lit it sets of a chain reaction that burns away the compound, breaking it down and leaving back the greasy juice to collect. Over time as the obsidian cracks from the portal burning, the greasy film begins to pool into the cracks creating the crying effect. Crying obsidian don't work in portals because the waste-filled cracks disrupt the reaction needed for the portal to burn.
What you do with really old portals is you wipe it down with a clean dry cloth every once in a while for maintenance. It's not really something most people have to worry about, since the whole cracking process takes a really long while.
    (My take, haha)

What Im thinking is that a witch or other type of mob that can use magic cast a spell on the obsidian to give it the power of interdimensional travel and the reason for obsidian is because when viscous lava is rapadly cooled it turns into obsidian and because viscous lava is in valcanoes, and viscous lava is extremely, extremely hot, and so is the nether, I think that the heat of viscous lava is harnessed by the magic in the obsidian when a player lights a part of the of the obsidian frame, making the end portal

Obsidian is actually pieces of rock(made by lava, water) joint by some liquid which I don't know what. When its fresh the goo is solid, and that's why obsidian is so hard. Over time, the too liquefies in the heat and begins dripping out. That's the too in crying obsidian. Then when all the goo drips out, the obsidian breaks in small rocks. This goo might also have magic properties which we see in portals anchors etc. So basically your answer is
The thing dripping out of crying obsidian is magic superglue.

Maybe the portal juice is made when the water hits the outside of lava, cooling it down, so for it to give it's power with heat - energy, then after a long period of use it starts leaking the juice, after that we use it as an respawn anchor and with enough heat - energy it acts like a portal

Think of it like the portal is attached to the obsidian just like soap in a bubble blower and the only reason you can not turn it into a bubble is because it just transfers the air you are using to blow on it into the nether. The reason the portal gets trapped in the obsidian is because over time the obsidian starts to decay and Crack and the portal starts to seep into the cracks and gets trapped there. That is just my theory.

Here's an interesting idea. What if as the crying obsidian leaks portal juice the nether portal gets more and more unstable. That's why you see netherack and other stuff leaking into the overworld. After a while the portal breaks and your world is safe from nether corruption, but that doesn't explain why ruined portals in the nether don't have overworld stuff.

Here’s an interesting idea: what’s the only thing that can reasonably destroy obsidian(without a pickaxe(because why would the builders go through that much trouble to ruin their own nether portal?))?
The wither. Think about it: what if the ancient builders went to the nether, accidentally summoned the wither, and it attack them, destroyed the portal on both sides and broke some obsidian. Furthermore, it would explain why our portals never get cracked: because some of the obsidian that survived got soo heavily damaged that its portal juiced leaked out and began to more so “bleed” rather than “cry”.
    Just an idea tho

    beds later got added though
Their original concept got revived in the form of a respawn anchor which allows you to set your spawn inside of the nether
also, it was never added to 1.16 just as a placeholder

I think since obsidian is basically cooled lava it doesn't have any magical properties BUT since we use it to create the nether portal it over a long period of time absorbs the portal and so the portal well isn't a portal anymore. Since the oby absorbed the magical portal inside it as you sead you still can create a small portal the respawn anchor.

the nether portals connect the overworld and the nether, and they're of course made using obsidian. obsidian is made by combining water, the liquid found almost anywhere in the overworld, with lava, the liquid found almost anywhere in the nether (and in the deep underground located very close to the nether). blue + red = purple, so the liquids form the purple portal juice with a hard layer of obsidian around it. crying obsidian is overused obsidian, so the outer layer is cracked and constantly leaks juice. the juice is like fuel and a fire/glowstone is like a match for creating a portal/respawn anchor

I think that when the Wither come through portal to overworld, it destroyed everything in it's path. Nether portals were no excuse. When porlat was destroyed by the explosion, some energy sucked into the obsidian and that, with the explosion, caused it to crack. Now ,after year's, it's dripping out. The obsidian from the portal was probably put into the chest's near the portal, or brought to villages ( it's quite possible because we can find obsidian in the blacksmith's chest's and villagers are not so bright so I don't think they created it)

I think its the other way around, after many years of being active the portal essence leaches into the frame and causes it to crack, leading to the portal becoming unstable and eventually breaking when the frame crumbles. The pieces left over, infused with the energy of the portal, can then be used to open miniature portals and set the player's spawn.

from what i understand, obsidian _has_ magical properties, and what happens when you take a wire and plugs it on both sides of a battery? it makes a closed circuit and starts to heat up. The way I see it, the closed-circuit made by a nether portal "circles" the magical energy around the portal and focuses it on the inside, like some kind of weird EM field.
the crying obsidian is probably, as you said, old obsidian, that, like an overused wire, heats up too much and "burns out"

Portals seem to have a connection to heat, you use a flint and steel to activate a nether portal, fiery blaze powder is used to make eyes of ender, which are needed for the interdimensional ender chests, as well as activating the end portal, which also has lava nearby, and glowstone can be presumed to be hot or warm. If something very hot, such as lava, was rapidly cooled and turned into obsidian, it would make sense that this heat energy could be trapped inside the obsidian in a different form: the portal juice.

Theory : The way portal juice went inside obsidian is that the lava in minecraft is infused with a tiny amount of magical energy that sparks the creation of portal juice. When combined with water (reagent) and lava (catalyst) The magical energy inside the lava gets encapsulated inside the obsidian which in turn makes portal juice. The reason water is a reagent is because it is needed for brewing (you need water bottles to start brewing) However, once the magical energy gets encapsulated; the obsidian starts deteriorating (very slowly) and cracking which makes portal juice leak.

Maybe the liquid could be the hiding energy which comes out of obsidian when it senses heat or other energy forces. This energy is made when the lava clashes with the water and when the obsidian is used too much or too long, it gets weak and can't hold the energy. It cracks so that the energy can be released. But it was made from liquids that is why it releases liquid energy.

maybe people long ago before the player spawned maybe they tested on obsidian and make something color purple into a liquid then transfered with something that can go inside of blocks so that the purple liquid is inside with something like gunpowder is inside when you light it up the gunpowder explodes inside and its trying to make the purple liquid to come out and it cant becuase it doesnt have enough power that means when we make a portal with 10 obsidian its power level is stronger and all that purple liquid comes out and comes together but the fire is getting combined with the purple liquid and turning the dimension into the nether that explains why you need more obsidian to make a bigger one that means is if you just made the top with 10 obsidian with 10 obsidian also in the bottom and the right and left sides dont have obsidian so it cant travel up and the obsidian is to low powered to make a half of it so it doesnt make a half or the whole thing thats why it needs to have more obsidian but if its to much it doesnt gets powered and since that the fire is combining with the purple liquid its changing into a firey place that we now call the nether and maybe its sopused to be somewhere great and just lighting the obsidian exept the inside of it becuase maybe it was gonna turn into like a portal named heaven or a portal were you can go anywhere you want but it happened to be the nether becuase we always light the inside and also the portal is being created like clay it hardenes into something becuase of the fire you can see that it is still forming becuase of the portal having something that always goes into a circle and thats what i think how it got in there and how the pirtal got created 😎
