- Most succulents are in active growth over the warmer months - which means that when winter arrives, we can find ourselves with very little to do. In this video, though, I suggest five great families of plants that do their growing while temperatures are cool - therefore, giving us a way to while away the hours while we wait for the rest of the collection to wake up!
This video features Haworthias, Bulbines, Oxalis species, Pelargoniums and Dioscorea elephantipes.
Great video! Thanks
Thanks for watching
Beautiful plants! What zone are you in?
We don’t really use zones down here much, but I looked it up and Sydney is in the equivalent of zone 11a.
Hawortia are beautiful plant collections luv them too ❤❤❤🤩😍🥰🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Yes they are! 🤘
Its preety much impossible for me to grow these plants bc of way too much Winter wet and preety harsh cold winters. But i do love me some hawortias and obesa....my god i need more of them lmao😅.
You can grow them inside if you have a sunny window.
I can recommend "secret jardin cosmorrow" one of those over your windovstil and you can grow anything ^^ low wattage and good spread of light, for a few bucks mate. Also it run on 24w DC which is nice 👍👍
@@Tony.795 space is limited, im a plant hoarder lmao😅
@@zhaezz84 will def check those out thx!
@@Royaliize "Led grower EU" got them cheapest, and get one for growing not blooming ^^ They work much better than normal LED growlamps, becouse they give off an much more evenly spread out light. And they wont burn your eyes out either.
Pachycormus Discolor, Tylecodon and Othonna are all epic winter growers
Great recommendations. I’m just about to sow some Pachycormus seeds for the first time actually.
Didn’t know my pachycormus is a winter grower, it’s had leaves all summer but done nothing. It’s finally starting to grow and it’s shooting up like a weed.
@@wadeolsson856 like the Bursera Microphylla, I think they are opportunist growers! But in habitat they only get winter rainfall
My dioscorea has 25 cm vine - I’m so excited to watch it grow! What a beautiful, strange plant ❤
Isn’t it just! Love those plants that sit in the space between weird and beautiful.
Checkout Bulbine Haworthioid. If you love haworthia and Bulbine this is the ultimate combo. They stay really small so they dont occupy much space either. I think its a great plant if you want to stage it. Thrive on neglect. I just forget about them for months
Great tip! Not a species I’ve grown, but I do have some similar, like B. inamarxiae, which is lovely.
Great Video as always! I just shifted away from cacti and more into the african succulents like 2 years Ago and aspecially Bulbine and Haworthia do very good for me in winter even though we get really cold weather here in Germany! (With an heated greenhouse ofc)
But my favs for the winter are Lachenalia at the moment
Very nice! I’ve not delved into Lachenalia, although I’ve been tempted before. Their flowers look amazing!
Part two please
I could do it… there’s heaps of plants I couldn’t include.
You have such amazing videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have some wither growing species (tylecondon, albuca, & more). My question regards two specific winter growing plants: pachypodium namaquanum and aloe ramosissima. They are both native from Northern Cape and Southern Namibia, so they grow when temperatures get down. My question regards watering in this season. What is your advice? Regards from Lisbon, Portugal.
It’s hard to recommend exactly how often to water without knowing all of the context - but for my winter growers in plastic pots, I water them once per week when they’re in growth.
Thanks @@AridZine!
Lovely stuff mate! I used to propagate pelargonier 20 years ago, i had 2 big industrial greenhouses i took care of, we made thousands of those me and my friend. Cant stand the smell to this day ^^ Regards !
@@zhaezz84 nice! I was just in Vallensbæk Kaktus gartneri and got some different stuff very cheap and kind dude, with a impressive collection of Cactus and succulents. Def a visit if u comes over here, if u havent already been.☺️
@@Royaliize I will def go there next time i visit! here on Fyn, they all have a ton of mealybugs and thrips lol, i dont even dare to buy the pots :p Best regards mate!
@@zhaezz84 didnt saw any mealybugs but u never know about them roots. Bought 10 plants with no problems, Maybe i was just lucky aha. I think he had thrips problems tho.
@@Royaliize Good to hear you found some nice stuff without having to order. I only buy plants from Thailand now (or grow from seed), even the big Cacti growers in Germany have pests these days :x
@@zhaezz84 isnt it risky and expensive to buy stuff outside eu? I have used neem oil alot, i use it a few times a year just to keep stuff at bay. But it seems some Cactus species tend to get alot more bugs than others for some reason.
