  • I recently decided to take on the challenge of creating a papercraft model of the AGM-78 Standard ARM rocket. The AGM-78 is an American air-to-surface missile designed to destroy enemy radar installations. I found some images for making one out of paper format A4. In this video, I'll be taking you through my process of constructing this complex paper rocket.
    The Build Process
It probably took me about 2 hours total to build the paper AGM-78. Applying glue carefully was the most difficult part so that the fins, nose cone, and body pieces lined up correctly. Seeing the model finally come together was incredibly rewarding after all that effort.
The AGM-78 Standard ARM is an American air-to-surface anti-radiation missile built by General Dynamics. It is designed to target and destroy enemy radar systems in order to suppress and disable air defense operations.
Some key details about the AGM-78 rocket:
    ■ First deployed in 1960s during Vietnam War
    ■ Carried by wide range of fighter jets and bombers
    ■ Long and slender shape, about 12 feet (3.7 m) in length
    ■ Large control fins on rocket stabilize flight path
    ■ Weighs around 750 pounds (340 kg)
    ■ Passive homing head guides missile to radar emissions
    ■ Carries about 140 lbs (60 kg) blast/fragmentation warhead
    ■ Flies at speeds up to Mach 2+ once launched
    ■ Effective range of around 30 miles (50 km)
The AGM-78 allows aircraft to safely target radar sites from long distances. By taking out these radar installations, they open up airspace for further strikes. Hundreds were fired in Vietnam to eliminate surface-to-air missile guidance abilities. Though no longer in active service, it pioneered modern anti-radiation missile technology widely in use today.
I’m really happy with how my AGM-78 paper rocket turned out. It stands about 65 cm tall and looks fantastic displayed. This project tested all my crafting skills but was well worth the challenges it presented. I learned a ton about precision paper folding techniques. Let me know if you give a papercraft rocket a try after watching this video!
