Very interesting jig set up to sharpening the new tool. I like it when someone takes the time to make everything turn out with a sense of pride in their work. Most would have just put it into a drill and went to it on a bench grinder. Very good video.
I had 416 on hand, so that's why I used it in this project. Generally I prefer 416 to the common 3 series alloys, because it machines substantially better, and you only give up a little corrosion resistance. This is a good link if you want to look at the maintainability rating (higher is better). www.carbidedepot.com/formulas-machinability.htm
I'm in the US, but the company I work for has a global presence. The new GDPR laws required a lot of changes to existing systems and even a few new ones to make sure we were compliant.
I like the fixture you made and used to sharpen the point. Thanks!
Beautiful work!
I've watched so many turning videos that I now have to find room for a wood lathe. Looks like fun! Nice work...
Just be prepared for the mess, as wood turning makes a huge one. :-)
I like the combo of machine work and wood. This awl is even better than what is sold in my local LeeValley store.
Nice work as always, Dan! I really like the grinder setup using the collet block and the stop rod.
Thanks Stuart!
Nice project and I love the wood you chose

Simple, yet nice!
Loved it!
Nice work!
Thanks Lee!

Very nice look pro 👍👍 anyways why you chose 416 steel instead of common 304.. os it better and sharper ?

Hi Dan. Good to see you making videos again. One of my best go to channels. EU laws? I thought you were in the USA. either way great video.
