Dr Oechslin is an absolute genius. His work with Ulysses Nardin, especially with the Freak, was incredibly impressive but this, with his own brand, is even more so. I still maintain that George Daniels is probably the most important watchmaker of recent decades having reinvented and improved the watch escapement, but Ludwig Oechslin is probably the most creative mind in watchmaking since, perhaps, Breguet himself. Ochs & Junior watches are a little too austere for my tastes, but for sheer engineering brilliance they're absolutely fascinating.
You won’t get as many views with something like this, but it’s videos like this that are true to yourselves. Fabulous, interesting, really cool watch. The best thing is that extra long cog to skip 31. What a brain
I'm not colorblind and I still can't see shit except for dark holes in the smaller inner circles. This calander seems unusable to me. In the outer "date" circles I could see the first one is a dark red that's hard to make out against the dark grey.
I'm here because you posted that nobody watched and I am here to do my part. My level of engineering knowledge is roughly Jeremy-Clarkson-with-hammer. What a marvel of a mind that can come up with simple solutions to complex problems. I feel like I just sat through calculus class.
This truly is a work of genius. It's low-level (as in, deep in the inner workings) movement architecture optimization. It's a beautiful thing to see in horology.
Ochs und Junior aka The Anti Rolex. You go to Rue Numa-Droz 143, sit with the man himself for a couple of hours, he draws the concepts you're thinking of right in front of you, in a month or so you get the proper drawings, in 3 months you go back there and have your 3-watch order delivered, again, by the man himself. This, compared to go into an empty Rolex or PP AD and having people laughing at you for asking for a watch, its quite a different customer experience.
BRILLIANT! In some ways, I think the movement is much more accomplished and dare I say sophisticated than the likes of Patek and Lange with their magnificent 400 parts.
Thank you for celebrating more creations of Dr. Ludwig Oeschlin. He is such an underappreciated genius. Hopefully you'll get hold of the osch und junior day-night watch to showcase the visual equation of time function.
RUclips didn't show this to me at all until I saw your post.. quite weird as it showed the last one. This is such a quirky watch without showing anything on the surface. I'd get one just to be able to explain to people how it works
As engineering it is truly amazing, as design it is truly woeful. Even with your HD macro footage I could barely see the month or day indicator and they might as well have been on the rear of the case for all their utility. But it was still very interesting and impressive nonetheless, more of these kind of films please.
I suspect that part of this is due to the necessary harsh lighting for videos. These macro shots must need intense, directed light, which also creates deep shadow. It might be a bit easier in more normal, ambient lighting.
@@CyberSammael the fact is you can chose any color combination. The one on display is not great but you can pick much more contrasting colors for the dots vs the dial. They have a nice configurator on the website with lots of options
Can’t say I would buy one BUT it’s a very interesting concept and brilliant execution. This is a watch one references to distinguish the true “gear heads” from mere investors. Thank you for making us all a little smarter and a lot more informed.
If the holes for 31 days can do double duty to indicate 60 minutes, then surely the 12 holes for months could have been placed in a way that did double duty to indicate the 12 hours
I know this isn’t a watchmaking channel but this vid would really have benefited from the movement coming out of the case to aid understanding the description.
*Reading the day/date on this watch:* *Step 1* squint really hard and look for the barely discernable colored dots and try to count which position they're in. *Step 2* give up and look at your phone.
This videos is why I enjoy your channel so such. (NOT CAUSE WE AMERICANS FEEL THE BRIT ACCENT IS SO OLD WORLD but the amazing content of your videos) With a collection of PP, JLC, and Rolex (NOT ONE HYPE WATCH IN THE COLLECTION), years and years of buying what I love.. I'm so FUCKEN impressed with those whom are the true GENIUS of our time... Will sell one of the OVER PRICED ROLEX in the collection (purchased from Mayor Jewelers in Miami Fl.). For the past 18 years my local AD has called to purchase a ROLEX at AD prices. They know I will NOT sell what I true LOVE. This Watch is AMAZING..
Great innovation, making things simple is always harder than adding complexity. It looks too hard to read though, the holes & color don’t look very legible. Are they also lumed?
Yes, very clever and good looking, but I have a penchant for watches that can be easily read. Divide by 2? Multiply by 2? Simple minimalist watches are great, for example a Max Bill, and you have the added bonus of easily being able to read the time and date!
I really like their concept. Just can't understand why they use an ETA 2824 as a base movement for most of their watches. It's a perfectly fine movement, but IMO a bit 'pedestrian', given the price point of these watches. Also, I reached out to them with some questions, because I got interested in adding a watch from them to my little collection and wanted to clarify a couple of questions. I thought they would be responsive to inquiries, given that they are a boutique brand. I believe I sent a friendly email, but unfortunately never heard back from them. Maybe communication with customers is not their forte ...

"Why does my brain feel like a puddle in the back of my skull?" I just took a bong rip off Pink Death and Tuna hash before watching this masterpiece.....this is the most accurate description of how I felt at that very moment, kudos.
I must be extremely thick and blind because I didn't understand any of that, and I couldn't see any changes in the day or date indicators. I do like the strap though!
Reading that dial reminds me of my binary watch - 2 rows of LEDs, one with 4 and one with 6. You read the hours and minutes where a lit LED is a 1. It feels a little like having your brain smashed in by a lemon-wrapped brick but only till your brain starts to recognize patterns. Being an IT nerd helps.
While I was always on the fence about this piece as its not an easy read, I actually love this concept now! I have what’s known as “time-space synesthesia” (super interesting, look it up) and this is a perfect visualisation of where you are in a week/month/year at any given time.
Impressive. Just wish I want 3 pints of Amstel in or I’d be able to keep up. Pretty sure I’d be either late or early by a day or two if I owned this watch. Tick tock. 🤷♂️
Very much a fan of most "different" watches, but I don't really see how it puts Patek Philippe to shame at all. Was Patek trying to achieve making a minimalist watch like this? Kinda like saying Steph Curry having the all time 3pt record puts Messi to shame. Both playing sports at a high level, but they're playing different sports.
Distilling the calendar functionality to employ so few extra parts shows blue sky thinking and true engineering genius. However, it seems an exercise in making something very complex, very simple, yet sadly completely unintelligible.
Phenomenal everyone who likes this content HIT LIKE. Don’t follow the herd and only back the likes of the big three. That creates bubbles and makes those works of horological genius, unobtainable to the likes of most. An interesting watch, though for the price there are many other watches I'd prefer to own and wear. But I give it two thumbs up for thinking outside the box!
I think the Red Baron was shot down by an Australian with a bolt action Lee Enfield.. so maybe not a lot of holes in his plane? So.. still an accurate statement I guess. This watch would drive me crazier than a sh!thouse rat counting holes.
Interesting watch. But it looks like the day, date, & month are difficult to read plus it requires far more thinking than I care to put into my time-reading.
The scale of the brushings on the brushed metal parts it’s too big and makes the metal look rough and unfinished rather than elegant. The watch face is kind of OK but the hands and the handstack cap just look terrible.

A very impressive achievement - if only the holes were just *slightly* bigger. It doesn’t look very legible at all in this video.

Ludwig is a hilarious person to hang out with. Brilliant, of course.

The weird positioning of the hour markers makes it needlessly harder to read, not a fan of minimalism when it impairs functionality
