We are Heather, Bradey, Alexa and Chloe. We purchased an abandoned stone barn in the foothills of the Italian Alps and we are working together as a family to renovate and restore this old stone barn into our dream home.

I totally agree with you about the culture shock after returning to the US many years later. I traveled the world (97 countries) for 5 years on a motorcycle! Then I decided to settle down in Rome. I was there for 2 years traveling all over Italy then 2 weeks ago I landed in Detroit (I am actually in the suburbs) and was not ready or it. Yes everything is big and convenient to a point! To make a long story short: I miss the Dolce Vita...........You guys have a great family. Happy Thanksgiving.

Great to see you are taking time out to restock your energy banks! You have worked so hard on the stone house. All that digging, concreting and moving of heavy materials must have really zapped you. Not only that the stress of your visa situation must be adding another layer of stress. Enjoy the time with family and friends and just being a family. You will benefit in so many ways. Love this video. I have often wondered if you guys were struggling with burnout even though your videos seemed to show happiness in the step by step, daily work and all of those demands. So happy for you all. I love that you've been able to create a life "outside the box". Your girls are learning lessons and skills that most kids don't attain until they're nearly adults. I also totally get the reverse-culture shock, bc I'm an Michigan expat who's lived in Sweden for 22 years now. My Swedish hubby and I travel back to Michigan every year to visit my family and our friends (sometimes twice a year if I whine enough). People sometimes ask me which country is better - my home country or my adopted one, but the truth is that both countries have their charms and faults, but that I'm experiencing the best of both worlds. On the other hand, Americans are definitely more open and friendly than most folks I've met in our travels (four different continents). So, my friendly fellow Americans and my family are the things that draw me back home to Michigan every year. Looking forward to your upcoming travels!

That joy to travel is what I look like every time I head back to Sweden and my home 3 hours north of Stockholm. I can relate so well. The first time I was in Sweden was in 1971 when I was 20. I never got over it and decided to 'come home' four years ago. Thanks for all you do.

When working on a project causes burnout, the best thing is to get away for awhile. Always enjoyed my work conferences away to restore the energy and renew the spirit. Good choice. YAY! I am so happy you guys got to get away. My husband and I built a house by ourselves, well about 90% And I remember getting so burnt out and tired. And getting a break really does help you get revitalized. Enjoy your time.

I’ve only just found you and as a Canadian who has lived in Australian for a very long time, I know reverse culture shock well. An Egyptian friend of mine once said that your country of origin is like your mother and your new country is like your wife, you’ll always love and visit your mother, but you have to be with your wife. I love that sayings, it describes living abroad so well. Thanks for all your time and effort making these videos. I did it for one year and know how much work it takes. Enjoy visiting home.

Congratulations on the renewal and recharge trip and the information on what is happening in your lives. I was actually shocked when I read the heading of this video "We Left Italy." I had all kinds of terrible thoughts about why you had to leave. I'm glad that you took a minute to explain what is happening and why. I appreciate knowing and not being left in the dark. It seems like I have a part in your lives. It's healthy and it feeds me and my desires to travel...the best reality TV ever! ! ! Unfortunately, because of the fast growing cancer in my liver and throughout my body, my traveling days are over and that makes me so sad. Thank you.
