The best croissants in DC are found at Cle Doree in Mount Airy, Md. The best traditional French restaurant in DC is L'Auberge Chez François in Great Falls, Va. I’ve been going there since they moved from their Connecticut Avenue location in 1976. Almost 50 years later, and I still find it magic.
@@royaventurera I didn't realize you were local. You know, President Kennedy established DC as the French food capital of America, but that's no longer the case. In addition to fine dining, there used to be little bistros all over the place. We even had an internationally-recognized French culinary school in Bethesda. I ate in a restaurant of the side of Mt. Ventoux whose chef was trained there. Now, good examples are hard to find.

I totally think the best croissants in the DC area are at Ooh La La in Wheaton/Silver Spring MD. They are the best I have had outside of France by far. Le Diplomate and Bistro Du Coin I always enjoy also.
@@royaventurera Thanks for visiting! DC has a great food scene, and totally agree on the Euro vibe, it's what drew me to the place and I've been here for over 20 years. I am overdue for a 7 AM visit to the bakery in the morning, people think I am nuts, but that's when you get the best of the best!! I'm curious about your comment that DC is the American city most similar to a European city. What criteria are you using, besides a good public transportation system? What other American cities in your opinion have a more European vibe?
For me it’s so many things! To name a few: -Definitely good public transport as you mention, so more easy to live car free (which I do) and many walkable neighborhoods as well as bike lanes and trails. -There’s also a building height restriction so the buildings are all sized more similarly to European cities. -Lots of outdoor, terrace dining. -There’s also tons of monuments, statues and museums (which cheap museums are harder to find in the US than Europe). -The architecture. -Lots of farmers markets. DC is definitely an American city with a special culture of its own but there are several lifestyle things that remind me more of my time in Europe than other parts of the US.
The unique (to the US) different street grid… L’Enfant (a Frenchman) designed Washington, DC and it reminds me of Paris (or more appropriately as an American, Paris reminds me of Washington, DC 😂)
