I have original 62 JM and i find that 56 years of grime stops the rattle
clean it you monster
Dude that is such a beautiful sounding and looking guitar. The mastery bridge for sure adds stability and sustain. What a great deal! Your tone and playing is fantastic too.
Got to love a Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster :)
Yeah, 'love' them dude. Not be obsessed by them, dream of them every night, hide them in your cupboards, under the stairs - the floorboards probably I wouldn't be surprised in your case.
Then again, it's all good. When I buy my next Jazzmaster, you will be the man I contact first, so not complaining.
Ryan got a great sound out of this instrument. It's definitely a classic and I can see people fall so much in love with this instrument. It's up there in its own right with the strats and teles.
dang you been round my house ??? hahaha
funnily enough I got another Jazzmaster today video to follow soon :)
They have just such a unique sound like no other guitar :)
Yeah totally let me know if you get one dude
@@123ubuntu666 hey man, hope you're well not heard from you in a while?
I have one of these and it was actually nice to hear it play in a style of music that I don’t play. It makes me appreciate it more knowing I could play something other than Fuzz drenched Melvins-esque punk rock.
Yeah, I originally got interested in the jazz master because of My Bloody Valentine. Now I'm hearing it the guitar is super versatile.
Love the tones at the beginning! Really excited to watch this again as I now have one on order. Thanks!
Welcome to the family!
Also that fretboard has a lot of stank. pls clean
yeah, i noticed that as i was editing this, lol. When i change the strings ill give it a good cleaning.
You have a sonic blue jazz master like I do. I bought mine at guitar center for 400 with a tortoise red pick guard. I love it.
I got a VM Jazzmaster last year, they really are fantastic to play. The necks are just superb for a Squier!
dude, i love your solo bits. they're always tasteful and quirky.
Thanks for showing that Mastery Bridge! Been wishing for more info from actual users. Also dig the Surf Music! Good work, dude!
Hey I live in Brooklyn, I have been a follower of your chamnel, I played in many punk and hardcore bands of the 80's and 90's....Reagan Youth, Ultra Violence, and my first punk band Disgrace ...I.have a friend Vic Venom....He plays in the coffin Daggers....great guitarist playing surf...
Just got one of these - looking forward to it! Good review Ryan.
250$ and under? I can't seem to find any in this price range. I've been seeing them around 400-500 . 😭
got mine in cherry red for 280 on reverb, but only because the original owner messed up putting on an aftermarket bridge
@@shotboy200 helpful
what a robbery price seriously... just use that Mustang bridge, and set it up properly and there should be no problem... Plus that Mastery Bridge ruins the look of the guitar in my opinion.
I found this older video of yours as you suggested. Mine is the exact same one - finish and all but no Mastery Bridge. That’s ok, I didn’t need it. No buzzing strings or tuning problems using my 9 gauge strings! I love the pickups also and find myself using the rhythm circuit over half the time when I want to emulate a humbucker sound - amazing! Fit and finish on mine was just like yours - straight from the factory. I have gigged with it several times and people tell me they like the sound. This guitar is an incredible value overall.
The Squier Mascis JM is one of my favorite guitars I've ever owned. I actually prefer it to the MIM Player JM I used to have.
Get rid of the TOM bridge, and it's a great guitar.Personally, I never had any trouble with the standard bridges .
@@markferguson3745 Old comment I’m replying to I know but do you know what bridges will fit? I couldn’t find any online without removing the studs
@@locky828 I never found one, but I did change the incorrect radius by sanding down a set of Graphtek saddles. This was not fast or easy work, but it did correct the string heights on the two E strings.
I purchased after market, genuine Fender Mustang saddles and they work great. Strings don't pop out. These are a mere fraction of the cost for a Mastery bridge.
The tremolo arm needed a firm push to seat in its friction collar under the bridge plate (visible in a few online bridge drawings and images). After seating, the arm never fell out again. Additionally, one could disassemble the bridge and tighten the friction collar set screw. I did not needed to do this though.
These solutions are readily available through online guitar communities.
Some people complain about the string spacing or/and radius of the Mustang bridge; is yours good?
Edit: Might be the Squier Mustang Bridge that some people comment upon?
I have the identical guitar. I used to play a Fender Jazzmaster in a band in the early 70s and, yes, that damn bridge would get the best of me at times. I eventually traded for a Les Paul. Wish I had them today cause I can’t afford to buy either one now. Still, the Jazzmaster was my first electric guitar and I was so happy when Squire came out with this one....a Jazzmaster that when I play it, I’m 19 years old again. I replaced the bridge and everything is great. And you’re right, Squire makes a great guitar.
Holy God someone knows how to use a jazzmaster! Finally!
You do realise that you can use Jazzmasters in any way you want, right?
Not sure what's more cool. The guitar or the shirt.
🎸 Squier Power 👊
7:55 I solved this problem putting some graphite powder, and now is perfect
I just bought this exact Jazzmaster in Sonic Blue for $260 off eBay. It was in mint condition, came with a Staytrem Mustang Bridge and the previous owner had already copper shielded the pickguard and inner cavity. I set it up with Ernie Ball Cobalt's in 10s, also replaced the pots. It plays like a dream. I read that the bodies and necks are made in the Corona Factory, and then sent to Indonesia for assembly. I would say that is probably correct, after getting my pots switched out at The Guitar Center I saw the identical Surf Green Fender Jazzmaster MIM version for $1099.00 on the rack and I did a side by side comparison through a Fender Twin Reverb and the Squire certainly felt better in my hands and over all sounded much better. Maybe the Duncans in mine that are stock were the key there as Fender MIM version comes stock with Dual single-coil American Vintage ’65 Jazzmasters. Overall, if you are concerned about the Squire Sticker on the head stock, put that thought to rest, these Vintage Modified guitars are great
Love the playing and tune in the beginning!
I've just got a squier Jazzmaster. Neck is 2012, HH scratchplate and body is refinished so it's maybe a bit of a partsmaster. Staytrem bridge is ok, but the squier trem unit was vague and notchy. I bought a fender Japan trem and that mostly sorted it. Had to enlarge the slot to make the lock work and I really like the lock.
If you like the mastery, id also recommend trying out the StayTrem. Works great, keeps the original look, and is way cheaper than a mastery.
I love my Jazzmaster! I have a black classic player Jazzmaster from fender, it comes with a "AdjustoG--Matic" bridge that I love! so I've never really dealt with the traditional bridge or its problems. really like your guy's channel!
I got a VM jazzmaster for $180 that already had the mastery. bridge installed and everything else was as seen in this video. I love the hell out of it. I did take off the white tuning knobs and replace them with some bold looking chrome knobs.
dang! you got a great deal
60 Cycle Hum yep-D. R. Conn Music guitar shop on Jones road in Houston Texas
that's a great steal!
Also can you do a full version of that song in the beginning it sounded nice
The rhythm switch is made to sound like a jazz guitar the jazzmaster was meant to be for jazz players became more popular on surf songs, but the shape of the jazzmaster is also meant to feel more comfortable when sitting with it like how jazz players sit and play. Joe pass played a jaguar for a short bit of time but it really could never compete with the Gibson L5 jazz guitar. I owned the 2,000 dollar 62 jazzmaster and sold it biggest regret ever but glad to see this Squier definitely wanting this guitar now.
The way you say tremolo makes me very uncomfortable
i know, i know, its an old habit and i cant seem to break it.
It sounds like a surname - John Trimolo
Regarding what you said about the Mexican line: well, these days, a Mexican Vintera 60's Jazzmaster Modified is about $1,000. I thought that's the entry level price for the American made Fenders. Guess not. Check out the Classic Vibe line: bone nuts, Fender alnico pickups and bodies made out of woods other than basswood.
I've been waiting for one of those quite a few time
You can mod the shit out of the rhythm circuit, i like it but it gets much more useful, also if you gig with it consider upgrading the trem, if you break a string there is a mechanism that puts you in tune again, otherwise you'll finish the song totally out. It happened to me and thanks god i had the trem-lock
Tommaso Poggi , my mechanism is to grab my spare guitar. Thanks.
Can you review a harley benton SC-550 or 450.
Cool Shirt
On strats, the reason the tremolo arm drops and flops is that it is probably missing the spring that goes in the tremolo arm mounting hole. Like yours, my VM Jazzy does not have that issue either.
Nice run down of this amazing guitar! So in the modified version the tremolo is a bit closer to the bridge... do you know if this make it like less 'floaty'...meaning one can't bend the notes as much? Thanks :)
cool shirt!
I've got a VM jazzmaster with a mastery. The bridge pickup was a little too twangy for me. It did surf stuff super well and high gain well but I wanted something fatter. I put a Porter J90 in it. It's pretty cool. Definitely meaner sounding. Thinking about swapping it out again though for a Novak or Lollar traditional jazzmaster style pickup though. Great guitar overall :)
What amp were you using on this one? By the way I’ve noticed you usually list the pedals in the corner but never the amp. Not a huge deal just something I noticed.
(VERY IMPORTANT!!) man what's the name of the song you played in the beginning?
Great video! Love my Squier VM jazzmaster. Just in the process of spraying it gold. Also changing the bridge to a staytrem as the mustang one that's on there has got the wrong radius which is very noticeable. You're lucky with your trem arm though as mine is just flopping around all over the place.
Don't be afraid to shove it in there, you'll feel it set.
Ryan, you got a bargain! Nice find!
What amp are you using, is it a modelling amp with effects built in, love the sound on the first tune, almost a shadows feel (british group of the60's)
I have a Squier vintage modified Jaguar and I really love it! I would install a mastery bridge to make experimental noise behind the bridge but it cost 300 :( so until I can save enough the stock bridge will do (which don't have the string movement problem) I'm planning on putting in some hot rail pickups too
Hi! You have to change the bridge “timbles”?
GUITAR only at :
0:00 to 0:52
8:47 to 9:36
10:04 to 10:37
cheers !!
Does the Mastery bridge solve the detuning problem of the Mustang bridge rocking back and forth? After using the vibrato moderately, if you check with a tuner, are you in tune?
Doesnt the whammy bar stay in position when its had the plastic washer on the bar before fitting? A clip i watched showed a strat and in the bag was the plastic washer that saved swinging trem. Maybe squire is different? But was just plastic washer?
I prefer the staytrem bridge... looks like a mustang bridge, costs half as much as the mastery, has correct radius, and doesn't look ugly and weird like the mastery
Jesse Bond where can i purchase that staytrem?
Jesse Bond , Mustang bridge saddles fit right into the standard Squier Jazzmaster bridge. Even less expensive and less obtrusive.
Can you help me?
Mine does a tick tick when moving the bar in the first 2 mm.
It can very annoying when playing at low volumes, and recording if there are mikes opened in the same room.
Your does it what it can be how to solve it?
Who knows?
THANX
The shirt is BACK!!
Everything said here also goes for the VM Jag!!! Great guitars!
I've had this guitar since August last year and I fucking love it.
It was my first off set Fender guitar and I just love how Squier nailed the vintage look and the playability, all the way from the neck down to the pickups (pickup cred to Seymour Duncan though).
The pickguard on mine looks like poop but I got that replaced for a really cheap price so.
But I hate the fact that you said that the tremolo system was great for you, because that's one of the things I've been having issues with and wanted to ask if you think it would be a nice upgrade with a Fender version of it instead?
See.. my problem has been the trem arm, that it just can't hold its ground and pops out everytime.
I push it in till it clicks and it holds for a smooth and careful use, but if I start swinging it like you in this video.. it just drops to the floor. Literally.
And I got a deal from my local luthier to get a Fender trem system (relic version btw but new) for about 30 dollars installed and ready to go. I think it could be a cool upgrade but what are your thoughts on it?
The bridge I actually replaced with the ones on the VM Mustangs and those work out really nice for me :)
But I do not understand why they call them "Vintage Modified" when they don't modify out those horrible bridges! XD
Great video bro, keep em' coming :)
Oh and btw, the shirt is awesome!
maybe i got lucky and my trem is just a random good one. if you take the trem off you can tighten down the part of the trem that grabs onto the arm.
mine's perfect! straught out of the box...strings change...et voilà!! amazing!
Hi hows the lose trem arm? I found this website, maybe this helps : www.offsetguitars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=48124
If not I know for strats with a lose trem arms you can use teflon tape around the threads to stiffen and keep everything in place.
Dude, you probably got a lemon. One of the things that I really love about my Jazzie, is that it NEVER goes out of tune. Ever. I ve even tried going crazy with the tremolo arm, and nill. Nothing. Rock solid. Try applying some pencil to the nut the next time you change strings. Sometimes, having a shitty cut nut will ruin the whole setup for you. I m telling you man, the tremolo system and the kluson style open top tuners on these guys are pretty legit. Oh, and dont go lighter than .10s
Ah shoot I never got a notice on these responses :O
Sorry for the delay!
Well I probably got a bad lemon like you said, because this tremolo was not solid at all, and my local luthier checked it and agreed.
But I got a good bargin on a reliced Fender tremolo system for it instead and now it's damn rock solid ;)
I do have 9's on it because I have two diseases on my fingers so I simply can't play thicker strings, but it works awesome for me and with this guitar :)
Awesome content/ review
Ryan, you rock!
are you sure that's a vintage modified? not a classic vibe one? the headstock looks like a classic vibe basing on the tint on it
its classic vibe, i was wrong when i made this video. Ill correct the title.
Well spotted. I understand that the current CV comes with an improved bridge (Mustang type single grove saddles), as opposed to the original 50s/60s bridge (multiple groove saddles)....are they any good?
i bought one of these for 200$. what a steal for the price
Just got a Squier Bullet Strat hard tail. Absolutely love it. Is it worth upgrading the electronics? Or should I just spend the money and get a more expensive model?
If it plays well but you dont like the pickups go a head and upgrade them, just dont expect to get your money back if you sell it.
60 Cycle Hum hey thanks for the reply man! Yeah I'm not naive about resale value. I actually like the way feels. So I figure it would be worth it to upgrade the pickups since everything else seems to click with me
Hey, do you still own this guitar? I've been looking at this one and the Mascis JM because I'm a HUGE Dino Jr fan. However, I can't think of anything else off the top of my head that I'd play on it that I wouldn't play on my Strat or LP. I saw one of these online in excellent condition for just $289. But can I justify getting it just to play Dino songs on?? Lol, please help me decide! Btw, I like what I see and hear from the guitar and I subbed. Thanks!
Ryan Haydon I still have it and love it. But if you want that Dino hr sound the j Mascis signature squire is awesome.
@@60CycleHumcast Ok. I haven't been able to find a Mascis JM for that cheap yet, but I'll keep looking out for deals. Thanks for the quick reply!
Ryan Haydon yeah looks like they usually go for $500
60 Cycle Hum Hey, I just found a Mascis Squier listed for sale in very good condition locally for just $300! Tough decision only because I really like my Strat and LP a lot, but I don’t think I’ll ever see a better deal than that on the guitar!
what is the name of the song at the begining?
I have a Squier Deluxe Jazzmaster, with the same trem unit, but with tune-o-matic bridge, and can't get the darn thing to stay in tune with 11s, no matter what I do. The spring tighten or loosen, makes no difference. It was fine with 9s, but with 11s, I just can't get it right.
Have you tried yours with thicker strings?
I'm thinking of buying a Squier DLX JM. Did you solve your problem?
Mine does decent with Hybrid gauge.
And you must fix the bridge from moving back and forth.
Not Perfect, but hope it can help.
If it’s buzzing or out of tune that means it is not setup properly it sustains and stays in tune if it is setup like an archtop
Exactly
damn, the black keys frontman!
moon burst exactly what i was thinking !! He looks like Dan
Very interesting thank you. I have the same guitar and mastery Bridge. Great guitar, sound, price etc. One little problem though...my high e string slowly unravels from the ball end of the string. Until the string comes off. Every time. I have a theory that this is because this set-up by nature has very VERY little string break-angle at the tailpiece (not a through-the-body design obviously, which has plenty of break-angle). Praytell, have you had/are having this same problem?
Did You install the mastery bridge your self??
@@The504lego me, myself and eye
@@The504lego if I shim the neck a-la-Gibson the angle will raise the bridge creating more break taking some pressure off the strings( basic physics). But I am curious if you are having same problem. Cheers!
awesome tunes!
Ryan, how well does your VM Jazzmaster stay in tune after you've used the whammy bar (vibrato) a few times?
Matt Gehringer very well
Ryan, one further question. With the Mastery Bridge was is easy or difficult to set the intonation?
Matt Gehringer it came already set up, but the few adjustments I’ve made to the action have been very easy
@@60CycleHumcast Thank you sir!!!
He plays it clean at 9:00
similarly the j mascis jazz is amazing!
it really is! a buddy had one and i couldn't believe how good it was.
Thank you
Is the neck sticky, like the classic vibe guitars?
This is the CV. A commentor asked, and Ryan confirmed, there is a link in the description.
Hey man what was the song called the one you played in the beginning
How much does this guitar weigh, considering how many parts of it are ROCK SOLID!
Someone above says it weights a ton. I expect it weights a bit less than that 😂. I'm also interested in its actual weight.
Hey man, I want your opinion on the new Offset models by Fender. They basically took off what made those models famous, and made "more functional" and simple, OK, I get it. But they took off the ability of the owner to customize and play with all the knobs and switches from the Mustang, JazzMasters and Jaguars. I'm really NOT into that series. I'm not a purist, but I think they became dull guitars...
BTW, I'm emailing you the guitar I built from scratch for the contest!!
Speak soon!
Very good tone. But I'm not too convinced by the idea of installing a bridge that costs more than half the price of the guitar ...
wish i could have that gtr
Here’s one not so nasty comment for you - ”you are one of the best reviewers that i have ever seen on youtube.” 👍 keep up the good work mate.🙂
if jazzmasters go for $250 all the time? show me one... im ready to buy
honestly I like the J Mascid more than any MIM I've played.
They say it's an awesome guitar. How is the neck?
I’m more of a heavy handed player, if I hit the shit out of the strings while strumming will they pop out?
no, there are deep grooves on the mastery
60 Cycle Hum thank fuck. you’re the GOAT Ryan
CIJ? What does that stand for?
John Johnston crafted in Japan
Why oh why do u want to spend as much on the bridge as the actual guitar?!? If I’m not mistaken, they almost cost the same :-)
I bought the guitar for $300 and it came with the bridge, i think i got a pretty good deal.
I wish Squier would release a electric XII model.
I think now that they've reissued the original Fender XII it's only a matter of time. It'll come eventually, if the XII reissue does well, I think.
I have a HH Jazzmaster and it was soooo buzzy, so I swapped out the bridge for one from Staytrem. It's superb, works like a charm and fixed everything. Although I wonder, if the Staytrem fixes all of the previous problems, will the difference between it and a Mastery be noticeable?
if you like the stay trem keep it! maybe ill do a mastery vs stay trem video eventually.
That would be an interesting video!
I have 2 jazzmasters. 1 has a staytrem and one has a mastery. I’ve had the staytrem on my JM for about 2 years and it does the trick well enough. Every once in a awhile I’ll knock the low e off the groove but 99% of the time is more than chill. I just put a mastery bridge on my other JM and it’s noticeably louder and I can FEEL the guitar vibrating and sustaining much louder and longer. I’ve been playing JMs for about 8 years now and I’ll probably buy more mastery bridges in the future.
oooo tha cool shirt!
I'm not gonna lie. U look just like my choir/band/guitar teacher lol
thank you for your honesty
That green guitar on ur wall. Wats that??
Bomken Basar Eastwood airline 3p I believe!
Question is it heavy
Yeah, it's pretty heavy
Potatoe patttaaatto. Some people wait for mistakes ready to pounce.
I read the title of this wrong like 3 times before I got it said mastery bridge over and over I read mystery bridge...lol
Fretwire makes a clone have looked at it all. Nice review, thanks D
Bruce told me he didn't send it
Super misleading video title. The VM Jazzmaster is quite different from the Classic Vibe, even when you take into account the replaced bridge. The CV is made of a different wood, the fretboard material is different, and it had different pickups. Almost literally every single part is different. Yeesh.
Yup.A lot of people are confused by all the various designations, and it makes a big difference. The VM has a lot of weaknesses,- bridge, pickups,- and the necks always seem out of whack, like they're not set high enough, or the bridge is too high in relation,- SOMETHING.It makes them innately dead and flat sounding. My least favorite Squier design.I find the VM's generally inferior ,even to Affinity's.
@@markferguson3745 Youre buggin' Theres a ton of Vm Guitars that are good. I have one that plays Amazing
it looks like my guitar, except my guitar has a black fender pickguard
is it indonesian made?
Yes
Jesus you got it that cheap with mastery ! , in Croatia you cant get it under 450$ stock :(
150 for this. In 60 61 2 bigsby was same price as the hofner club 60. With ebony fretboard heavily inlayed mither of pearl resl. 2 bigsbys or new hofner club 60. 1961. When i see hofners from this time with original bigsbys im shocked its half a hofner club 60. Wow. Wasted. £
Did you know, that you can play upstrokes with a pick?
Surfing with Varg Vikerness
The Classic Player is still better, but obviously for 500 dollars less, these bad boys can't be beat. Those tuners rule. They're a must for me on all my Fenders/Squiers.
Diet Guitar i have a lacquered 60s classic series strat in 3 tone sunburst. It nails the vibe and tone of that era. It is my number 1 guitar.
But like you said, the vintage modified and reissue squiers are very nice for the price.
My only complaint is mine weighs a ton !
mine weighs about as much as my CIJ jaguar did. i would dig it if it was super light though.
my VM jaguar is super heavy too. it plays really nicely and is put together really well, I think maybe they used some really dense wood on that series
I have a J. Mascis jazzmaster and its heavier than hell. But damn does she sound amazing
What weight are we talking?
My Squier Standard Strat is 7lb 15oz, I understand the JM is heavier, maybe due to the shallow cutaways.
Heaviest guitar I ever had (and sold) was an Epiphone Les Paul Standard at 9lb 10oz.
Please be normal and pronounce Tremolo just like everyone else. The first "o" is silent in everyday speech. But if you want to continue being weird, then by all means just keep saying it as you are saying it in this video.
Other than that you are a nice guy. Just grasp the fact that not all words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled.
I want to add that I too sometimes enunciate the first "o" in Tremolo, but it's the short form not the long form of the vowel. Say out loud "A E I O U" long form, then say "a e i o u" short form. There's a difference. When someone uses the long form of the letter "o" as in Trem-O-low it sounds different than Trem-o-lo because the first "o" is almost silent, but yes it is there. So he can say Tremolo anyway he wants, but I will always notice how he says it different.
The Guitologist here on youtube say's it just like 60 cycle hum does. But he takes things further and say's many words different from the rest of us.
BTW you have no idea how many books, encyclopedias, dictionaries I had to read in order to be admitted to the Enunciation Police! -Peter
Tre-molo seems right tre-mello is what is often said
