I finally have a working sewing machine! First Camping orientated project will be to deconstruct my old issue jungle sleeping bag and rebuilt/design it into an underquilt. I doubt it will turn out perfect but as long as I take my time and be patient I'm sure it'll do the job. Your videos are a great source of inspiration as well as extremely helpful with regards to hints and tips on sewing. Many thank.
Tac Blades I've done some practice on old sheets and pillow slips to help get thread tension correct etc. but I don't have the material to make a stuff sack at the moment. I'm sure as things progress though, I'll end up with a small stock pile of materials! I've not tried sewing with a double needle yet though so that's my next stop.
Fantastic build. True luxury now. I am a big believer in having great gear. Sure you can make things work, but when you really have the awesome stuff you can tell the huge difference. Now for some great outings.
I have just finished making one, kudos to you for the design, thanks heaps for the sharing. I have decided to lace the bottom section similar to the top as it will suit my need to have my hokey kokey feet either in or out at a moments notice. Mine came in at 390gms but it is for protected and not really really cold conditions. Thanks again for your YouTubing especially the MYOG vids. I hashtagged you when I've posted it. All the best.
I just finished a quilt and I've borrowed some of your design. I used the same baffle pattern (but baffle length is 10" with 5" gaps, so the "squares" are smaller than yours. 2.5" finished baffle height) and I did my edges the same as you. A pound of 950 fp down, a sewn footbox with snaps to adjust the length, and a draft collar, 608 grams total. I love the look of the baffle pattern. Have you had any issues with down shifting when you didn't want it? I think it should hold it well.
Congrats it's really quite a big task and well done on completing it. Nothing like making your own gear, mine is going strong, no down movement. I made a large linen bag to store it in not compressed and it's lasted many years perfectly.
@@TacBlades It took sooo many more hours than I anticipated. But if you enjoy projects like these, then it's worth it. I definitely get a kick out of using my diy gear. I made my hammock, ridgeline organizers, tarp, snake skins, stuff sacks, ponchotarp, and a couple little other bags.. Eventually I'll tackle making a pack, but that's a whole other level of difficulty.. Anyways, thanks for the vid on your quilt and sharing your ideas. I gave you credit for the baffle design when ppl asked about it on the diy facebook group.
Awesome stuff buddy, very well thought out, That looks amazing!! And dual purpose too!! Fair play to you mate, Along with your stoves your bringing a lot of innovations to the wildcamping/outdoors scene! : ) Thank you for showing us buddy, All the best, Jay
Just found your channel. I am interested in trying to make my own quilt, thank you for this, very easy to follow and your explanations cover everything. I may have missed this in the video, how much 950 down did you put in? I’m thinking 12 ounces or so. Thank you again.
Wiltshire Man no worries, your vids have given me so much entertainment and knowledge i thought it was time to give something back. I dont sell them only give them away now and again so they are truly something that money cant buy. :)
Evening mate. Thanks for the comment earlier. I tried to reply but the comment no longer there so I’ll put my answer here. Watched this video a few times by the way. Before I answer….when are you going to start making videos again. I watched all your diy projects years ago. Some brilliant videos. As for mine, the sponsorship I’ve been doing now for 2 years with Squarespace. Hear me out why. I’ve used the platform for 3 or 4 years as I mention in the video. It’s very unlikely to change and I use that segment to also show my products, share my videos and gear competitions. So it’s related to me. I could easily get enough sponsorship for 2 or 3 videos per week. I could take the money, highlight a tent or stove that I could be paid to promote. But then the next week I’d be promoting a different tent or stove. It’s not a direction I’d feel happy with at all. Yeah I’d get a healthy bank balance but at what cost…my credibility with my audience. I want to show new gear and I love trying it out, but if I was paid by those companies it wouldn’t feel genuine even though I’d give my honest opinion. I hope that makes sense. Oh../and thanks for all those early videos. I loved em.
Its a tricky one i prefer no sponsors. And yes if its like a relevant one like snugpak or something then it kind of limits you, i would look for someone relevant but adjacent, like an outdoors writer of books or a courses for the outdoors/bushcraft or something that doesn't compete with what you do but is still relevant. Pube straighteners could be massive. I have been planning to do a few more vids soon but real life is busy and my work is crazy at the moment but i will be out over the winter as i prefer that season. Made some more gear and in the process of making a crazy light packable chair at the moment just for fun.
Do you have to use a mattress protector with a quilt? Packs small and dual spec just brilliant. Caterpillar quilt because like a caterpillar it can be 2 things and you looked like a caterpillar rapped up in it lol. Fantastic stuff.
This is a really great quilt. I'm in the planning stages of making my own at the moment. What method do you use to make your channels? Are they part of the original fabric or do you sew them in separately?
Haha! Remember me telling you about the custom fit Nahanny sleeping bag I just placed an order for? I ordered it black outside and deep red inside - it will look very similar (in terms of colours) to your deep winter bag! Love your vids more and more!
***** "they look" - you mean the specs? I just called them, discussed the usage envisioned for the bag and gave them the body measurements they asked about. I also picked the inner and outer colors from the ones they told me they currently stock. I asked about various bells and whistles (zipper reinforced sides, collar and zipper baffles etc.) and was assured all the state of the art features are included by default in their bags. I write this in the car, on my way to the first outing with this bag, and the guys were kind enough to agree to ship it to a town on my way, so I could pick it up from there. In 5 hours I should get there and get it.
Hey, I'm back from the bag's maiden trip! The bag performed beautifully - rather, too well (I had to fight the urge to zip it up and to find the right zip opening config for confort, as in 4-5*C the bag was too warm and caused me to start sweating, and the night we spent in a refuge was so warm I ended up wearing the bag like a quilt). I am planning to shoot a video review / side-by-side loft comparison between the Nahanny Prakticus (this one) and my other two, synthetic bags (just for shits and giggles, because they're different classes) but this would be the first video I would be appearing in, and I have both limited time for now, and "stage fright" (how do you deal with the idea of showing yourself to the world in a video?). I'll post a link here as soon as the review is up.
Hi Tac, I hope you don't mind, but I had a go at making a quilt based on your design. I wanted to let you know that it worked out great...couldn't be happier. So thank you for sharing your idea.
I don't think I can send you a pic through these comments. I'm going to be putting a pic up on an Australian bushwalking forum, so will send you the link once I've done it. The thing I did different to yours was to put a 6cm wall around the top and sides by making the inside fabric bigger. Essentially putting baffles around the edges of the quilt, with the intention of making a nice seal so no cold air sneaks in. I went purple and orange:) And spent soooo long planning it.
BonzaDonza oh wow you did a great job looks perfect, thanks for the design acknowledgement it is a major achievement to make a quilt to this level. Its really great to see my design work for others. I guess you watched the vid a few times :)
Innovative thinking, as always! I'm very interested in your bungee arrangement around the shoulders. I've never liked the standard chord under the mat, but this is the first alternative I've seen. Have you had a chance yet to use it in the wild? At first viewing I'd be concerned that the whole quilt might turn with your body, leaving your back exposed? Also, how wide did you make it, and do you feel you got the width right? Thanks.
Hi your quilt's look great do you make them to order at all I would really like one and I also belive I have walked past you in the brecons pen y fan I think keep up the good work all the best shane
I LOVE this design and project. I have been following your videos for quite some time and I want to start trying DIY gear. I think once I graduate from my university, I will have more time to try to do some projects. My MAIN problem will be getting the materials. I live in Brazil and here I couldn't find any local material supplier for this kind of stuff (outdoor gear). I will probably have to try out some material from aliexpress, I have found some down stores there, and nylon. However I can't find any specific properties of nylon materials, such as it being downproof, or the coating on it. Do you reckon it's a good place to start? The other option would be to import from the US, but that would be too expensive, due to costums, shipping.
Also, do you have any software you use to design your gear? I was thinking of start drawing on autoCAD, since it's what I know most of, but I don't think it's ideal considering when you're designing fabric based products.
Lucas Jorge hi thanks for the comments yes aliexpress is ok look for 15d or 20d taffeta that is what you want for a quilt its down proof, i do use Qcad but for quilts i prefer graph paper.
anywhere roam maybe but its very complicated as i would have to document the design exactly and also find a way to manage the rights through nda which is a bit complicated to enforce.
I see that Loco Libre has chevrons as well, but I don't think down can be shifted from one channel to the other like it can be on yours. Do you know any vendors that make one like yours where down can be shifted between channels?
anywhere roam no i dont know of any commercial karo step style ones. Mainly because its very difficult to manufacturer compared to channels much more time consuming and more skill needed. They are more usually found in the diy market.
I found patents are worthless, as you have to buy one for every country, and some countries dont respect them at a government level, so really worthless. I prefer to innovate fast so while there might be copies of v1 i would already be on v3 making v1 obsolete :)
Hey Gary would you by any chance be willing to share the (exact) design with me?(only for personal use ofcourse) i would be willing to pay for it. greetings from Germany Markus
Chaingangboy89 hmm might be very difficult as most of it is in my head and not on paper. Look for joe brewer videos on making karo step including design it will help a lot
brilliant design! love your underquilt suspension solution, ingenious!

Karlos Fandango great news, hope all goes well maybe make a few stuff sacks to get going.

Do you have plans for this Karo step design ? It looks fantastic how did you measure out angle and baffle? Happy new year for French !
Fabulous piece of kit Gary.

Noel Adams thank you :)
That must of cost a fortune to make. Glad I found this after your survival series where you used this. Amazing work.
Sinfonian Barelytone its does cost a bit, but performance and low weight usually does cost :)
Very nice 👍👍
Very nice quilt, well designed.

Good idea Catquilt :)
No need for matress protector, i am usually wearing merino wool thermal layer for sleeping in, so this is enough.
+Tac Blades i quite like the idea for a name. 'The Caterpillar'
This is a really great quilt. I'm in the planning stages of making my own at the moment. What method do you use to make your channels? Are they part of the original fabric or do you sew them in separately?
They are all sold in separately they are karo step so not a channel but one large partitioned space.
You are so talented 💖 you need to sell these
Need to retire first lol :)
Does that mean you've gone off hammocks, Tacblades?? I've always wondered about them.. That's a beautiful quilt - you're very clever!!

Shane Marchant hi, sorry no don't make them for sale, too busy on other projects, loco libra make some awesome quilts.
It's a great looking quilt. Just wondering, does the down tend to drop to the edges overnight? I image it would, especially for restless sleepers.
