The stand-up thing is so weird. On one hand, they use "bomb" as a way of implying that it could have gone different, when in fact their sets are just terrible. A more honest way of putting it would be to say that they performed their crap comedy (again). There's a massive amount of "comedians" that just go from place to place and bomb for years and years, even fairly famous ones. That's what they do. And I don't care if you get some giggles showing your butt or whatever, and I don't care if you got paid, that doesn't mean that you're not bombing. But on the other hand, we've all seen how apparently hopeless comedians can turn into genius acts.
Look at some of Louis CK's earlier stuff for example, it's incredibly bad. Then look at his "of course but maybe" bit at the height of his career, it's sublime. So... I guess they're just running around being bad hoping that the endless embarrassment will somehow transform them into brilliance.
I'd like to know what exactly is supposed to go into that process before I sign that theory. Could it simply be that given enough humiliation some of the ones who are bright enough finally come to the realization that they have to put their mind to work? Louis said that he was _this_ close to ending his own life, when it hit him that he needed to come up with a new plan. He had to go that far before he forced himself to deal with the fact that he was just repeating garbage over and over.
The base premise of stand-up is that anyone can get up, go on the mic and try to be funny. But stand-up is a cornerstone format of the comedy industry now, not just a crowd pleaser at a local bar. Sure, let people stand up and try and be funny, but if you're in this for real, you had better realize that you actually have to work hard at it to produce quality entertainment. You can't just perpetuate the "I stood up and tried to be funny" thing, it will just kick your ass and nothing good will come of it. CK, Chris Rock, Stewart Lee and so on. All the best comics I can think of obviously used their brains first and then practiced a lot to put together great comedy. Going on the road with bad comedy is just practicing bad comedy, though to be fair, they don't always know if or how a joke will work, if it can work. And I suspect therein lies the problem: Seriously funny comedy is not for intellectually lazy people.
