- Mig-25 Foxbat :
The MiG-25 Foxbat can be described as a legend shrouded in darkness and secrecy. The MiG-25 serving in the IAF retired from active service in 2006 . This magnificent aircraft was acquired around 1981 with the 102 Trisonics and stationed in Bareilly. The IAF had around eight single seat and two twin seat MiG 25’s in service, and they were the MiG 25 R, the reconnaissance version.
- IAF MiG-25 Foxbat Over Pakistan :
In May (1997), an Indian Air Force (IAF) Mikoyan MiG-25RB Foxbat-B Reconnaissance aircraft created a furore when the pilot flew faster than Mach 2 over Pakistani territory following a reconnaissance mission into Pakistan airspace. The Foxbat broke the sound barrier while flying at an altitude of around 65,000 feet, otherwise the mission would have remained cover, at least to the general public. The Pakistani Government considered the breaking of sound barrier as deliberate to make the point that Pakistani Airforce (PAF) has no aircraft in its inventory which can come close to the cruising height of MiG-25 ( up to 74,000 feet ).
- MiG-25 Foxbat Secrecy :
The MiG 25 aircraft were flown in dismantled condition to their base in Bareilly, in Antonov aircrafts which led western analysts to believe the Antonov as huge acquisition. The base for the MiG25 was located in Bareilly, an other wise not a location one can think for a secret aircraft.
This aircraft got the IAF in the Mach 3 club. It’s pilots had to don a Cumbersome pressure suit and a helmet a bit similar to Russian cosmonaut’s.

EDIT: it can reach Mach 3+ speed level, it was the only counter to American spy plane SR-71 Black Bird which is the fastest jet ever created.

India should "make in India" a similar aircraft like Mig 25 Foxbat. Though it was for reconnaissance but the fact that it could fly at some serious altitude is still a great asset. F16 and JF17 of PAF will never be able to think of Intruding Indian Airspace with the mission to drop a bomb over our cities. As they will always be vary of Mig 25 alike - capable of flying over their max height limit.

I am from Pakistan and I want to say MiG-25 reconnaissance jet can fly at such high attitude where other jets cannot engage it ....its was built to fly high and counter US Blackbirds, but it not possible that it was not on Pakistani radars...and even Egyptian/Syrian MiG-25 performed high attitude reconnaissance mission over well defended Isreali airspace... #RespectYourRival

It was a reconnaissance aircraft, no defensive armaments, no other plane could fly at that altitude, Pak F16 could fly at 50,000 ft. The highest tested altitude of the mig 25 foxbat was 123,523 ft(by a Russian test pilot)

High altitude reconnaissance is a very specialised domain restricted mostly to super powers. USA never exported SR-71, U-2 , D-21 etc. Similarly Mig-31 has also not been exported by Russia. RB-57F of Pakistan Air Force was also operated in special conditions and is exactly the same as Mig-25 of India. In USA, these high-altitude assets were operated by CIA and not by USAF. Pakistan-deployed RB-57Fs are said to be flown by USAF crews (open source information), to monitor nuclear tests in Communist block (Soviet Union, China). But they flew missions over India too, including over Delhi. India fired SA-2 missiles at them but only once India succeeded in damaging one of Canberras of recce. Mig-25 is the same story, operated by Russian/Soviet crews in India with some Indian counterparts taking part in papers only.

Guys I have a Theory, when indian Navy bought the INS VIKRAMADITYA, it was a 3 subject deal. 1. INS Vikramaditya, 2.MIG 29K UPG AND 3 was 4 TU-22 bombers. The first 2 arrived but the 3rd was never talked about? Does it mean that we have the TU22 Bombers but the Indian navy is hiding it like we did in 1981?
Maybe coz Tu 22 is capable of destroying an Aircraft Carrier due to its 13000 lbs anti ship missile.

SR-71 was far superiour in terms of tech. Initially MIG 25 was fitted with an engine that was earlier used for a misssile, that means it could only lasts for about few hundred miles. The material of the body too was inferiour as compared to the Blackbird (MIG 25 was made with mostly using heavier Nickel Steel alloys whereas SR 71 was made up majorly of Titanium Alloy). Due to this heavyness, MIG was not as agile as should have been.
Actually a Soviet Pilot "escaped" from Soviet Union inn one of his MIG 25, landed in Japan and asked for Asylum from US Government. USA aggreed and kept the MIG and tested it. The details and tech of the MIG was no longer a secret. After this incident only Soviet Union gave some of the MIG 25s to other countries including India.
