  • Why Did Cloud think he was Zack? Or did Cloud pretend to be Zack on purpose?
    #finalfantasy7 #finalfantasy7remake #cloudstrife
    Today, I want to do a deep dive into the psychological processes going on in the mind of Cloud Strife and answer these questions. In this video essay, I intend to look at the events of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the original Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy Crisis Core and contrast them with real life psychological concepts to identify what exactly happened to Cloud Strife.

    Something interesting about the Nibleheim incident, during the initial flashback, where he has taken Zacks place in his memories, you can actually choose to pick Tifa up and carry her to the side. Where she makes reference to the promise. But Zack never did that, Cloud did. And that's something I note to being interesting. Like a subtle conflict of memories, of choosing which and what he believes happened.

    I REALLY dig this sort of deep-dive. I always hate when stuff like this is simply explained like "oh, Mako also has crazy memory-swapping magic" or other conveniences like that.
    I've always felt like the reason Cloud's story resonates with people, is because it felt so "real" and truly believable. He has these deep-rooted, totally relatable insecurities that, because he never dealt with, just kind of snowballed into real psychological trauma. Take all the magic and over-the-top villains out of the equation, and you still have a deeply compelling story about emotional trauma and how it can affect your identity.
    Good stuff! I just subbed, and can't wait to watch your other videos!

      I don't ever recall Mako poisoning ever being a explanation to Cloud's change? where did you get that from I want to check up on that. In the OG Tifa finds Cloud and his a blank slate, only after Tifa calls him Cloud is it when he starts showing any form on coherent thoughts, Jenova (in Sephiroth's form) tells Cloud that he got his memories when Jenova gave him Tifa's memories of Cloud, from there it gave him Zack's memories.
      It was even stated that Cloud didn't know things that he should know and he knew things that he couldn't have possibly know.
      I do recall that the first time we ever see Cloud speak as himself is during the Mideel section after Tifa fixes his shattered mind , when he stops acting like Zack and starts speaking about things that only Cloud knows about and Tifa had no memory of the incident.

  • @gamephreak5
    @gamephreak5 Год назад +23

    11:28 I realize you're trying to give a logical real-world explanation for how Cloud suddenly regained the function to speak and think normally when he encountered Tifa at the train station, but that's not what happened. We know that Cloud wasn't just marinated in Mako, but was injected with Jenova cells, and it was the Jenova cells that quickly formed the memories, thought patterns, and even speech patterns for Cloud that would make him "recognizeable" to Tifa.
    In universe, it's explained that when Jenova was alive, it would trick the Ancients by reading their thoughts and shape-shift it's form, voice, and speech patterns to match a loved one from an Ancient's memories to lower the Ancient's defenses and allow Jenova to get close to them in order to kill and absorb them.
    Cloud has a similar "ability", thanks to the Jenova cells in his body from what Hojo did. So while Cloud obviously was suffering from that catatonic state from Mako poisoning, he also quickly recovered via the Jenova cells reading and reacting to Tifa's memories of Cloud, all unconsciously of course.

    • @vgology
      @vgology  Год назад +7

      I think you are definitely correct and I should have included that in my examination. However, I think that the idea of a dopamine spike could work in unison with Jenova. For example, Zack also had memories of Cloud pre catatonia and they traveled with together for almost a year. However, Jenova never imprinted a persona. When Cloud saw Tifa and Jenova noticed a sharp dopamine spike, it could have chosen to imprint then while working with the bodies natural responses.
      That's just my theory though.
      Thank you for your comment and insight!

    Very nice analysis, but the term "lied" and Pinocchio nose are unfair to Cloud. Cloud didn't set out to deceive Tifa or anyone else, it's more that his sense of self - which was always weighed by deep feelings of inadequacy and an overwhelming desire to overcome his perceived weakness - was obliterated by the traumas he suffered, his submersion in the Lifestream for years and his infection with the Jenova parasite. Whatever remained of him was desperately trying to piece together even the flimsiest approximation of an identity, so he became everything he wished he could be: suave former SOLDIER First Class and mercenary. When the unrequited love of his life appeared before him, it was time to snap to attention and step into the role.

    • @vgology

      You are absolutely correct! Cloud never set out to deceive anyone. However the question of why Cloud lied is one that I often see. The purpose of the word lied and pinnocio nose were used in exaggeration to set up the question and then the analysis in the video would crush that assertion and show that there were many factors outside of Clouds control. Thank you for your comment and support!

    one key element you are forgetting is how the jenova cells between Cloud and Zack manipulate and merge memories. They infuse zacks memories (places he was where Cloud was not there. @@vgology don't forget Jenova is a Mimic. You are correct in experiments with Mako but also Cloud is given Jenova cells, Zack already had them. If you look at "Sephiroth/Jenovas"abilities they are able to control the robed failed experiments by using those cells in their body to control them to ultimately lead up to the Reunion "Jenova to become whole again". Just like you see Cloud in the Shinra lab zombie walking to the Elevator. He is being controlled.
      It works the same for memories.
      What you are saying about his trauma is spot on. But it doesn't explain the things he still shouldn't know. He does legitimately believe he is zack. Its why Aerith/Aeris catches onto this.

    Good video and there's a few bits you missed that reinforce your arguments
    Tifa - She isn't just a love interest but an intense source of shame and grief for Cloud. Tifa has an accident in her childhood where she fell down a mountainside looking for her mother spirit, all her friends abandoned her except for Cloud who followed despite not being close friends with Tifa or her group. Trying to save her, Tifa ended up in a coma whereas Cloud got by with just skinned knees where her Father put the blame solely on Cloud. His inability to save her made him begrudge his weakness which is where his desire to become stronger came from. His failure to get into SOLDIER only intensified this especially after his farewell promise to Tifa creating the terrible emotional cocktail of shame, guilt and self loathing.
    JENOVA - Cloud is put through the same process which creates SOLDIERs in the Shinra Mansion which involves being injected with Jenova cells. This can have the effect when combined with Mako infusion of creating super soldiers just like Zack. If the subject doesn't have a strong enough will and ego to endure the treatment however the near catatonic state you expanded on is the other side of the coin. The Jenova cells themselves act as a conduit where memory is easily transferred. Having seen Zack and Sephiroth fight during the Nibelheim incident, the Jenova cells in his body effectively taught him how to fight as a SOLDIER to the point where shortly after their first mission together, Barret readily admits that Cloud is strong. These cells, combined with Cloud's self doubts, trauma, and experimentation are the reason why he is unable to remember Zack.
    One thing to remember however is that Tifa finding Cloud is what saves him. She gives him the core of his personality to piece back together even before the Bombing Mission. If it wasn't for this encounter at the station, Cloud would have ended up just like the other poor souls in Black cloaks.

    Yup, in Remake and Rebirth Cloud gets incredible headache and PTSD whenever faced with the truth that do not align with his current "reality".
    That's the flash we see when Hojo tells him he wasn't a SOLDIER and in Rebirth he accounts the last meeting he had with his mother, we get flashes and her voice being blotted out when she is telling him that she is still proud of him, despite not getting into SOLDIER.
    And in Gongaga when he almost tells Aerith that if Zack has not made contact that means he's either a loser for ditching a babe like Aerith or he's..... dead. And just as he say "D" he gets the same headache and flash.
    Because he deep down knows Zack, knows he's from Gongaga, knows that those were his parents he just met and that he is dead. And he can't cope with that, yet.

    Memories are never a 100% recollection of what happened. Every time we remember something our brain has to build the story in our heads fresh and new.
    it's why if you watch a video of a vacation or something like that you don't remember it happening the way it does in the video.
    a memory is simply a story of what you believed happened and how it happened.

    • @wren7195
      @wren7195 Год назад +1

      Something I'd really like to research more (but is somewhat difficult due to me not being a scientist) regards how memory functions in/related to dreams. It's common for our memory of dreams to fade very quickly after having them, nearly disappearing completely by the end of the day. But I've noticed in my dreams lately (especially the last ten years: I'm forty-one now) there are many recurring places/locations... but those locations are always "the dream version" of a real place in my life. There are always differing factors in these locations compared to the real world, but the "dream version" remains consistent.
      Implies to me that although the majority of dreams seem to be flash-stored in short term memory or happen in a region(s) of the brain that doesn't easily contribute to long term memories, certain elements of them seem to be stored. They're also not easily accessed by the consciousness.
      That's fascinating to me. Your comment is extremely true and interesting, too. It's somewhat in line with how we can have a "sense" of an experience that carries the weight of the full volume of time we spent in that experience, without having to relive every single second via a memory. Be safe my friend

    • @HunterStiles651
      @HunterStiles651 6 месяцев назад +1

      @wren7195 I think it ties back into the purpose of sleep and dreams.
      Your conscious mind only processes a tiny fraction of the information that your brain takes in. You wouldn't be able to function otherwise. It takes the information that's immediately relevant and sends the down to the subconscious.
      But the problem with the subconscious is that it's like a little kid. It can't distinguish between useful and useless information, so after a while all that stored information starts to pile up and affect your cognitive function in much the same way an old computer with too much stuff on its hard drive begins to have performance issues.
      What dreams are is essentially your conscious brain going down stares and sorting through all that junk, encoding what's useful into long-term memory and dispersing what isn't into the bloodstream.
      In other words, your house always looks the same in your dreams because you see it a lot.

    Great job on this one. Apart from 'the universe' of Final Fantasy and whatever they came up with, it at least explains their most-likely origin of the story. I think it's such an unique approach this is what they used as a basis for a video game. It's great! Also some of these things feel relatable because I too have had experiences I didn't even recall two years later, 3 months into intense therapy. And they were experiences you'd think you wouldn't forget. It's really mind blowing how it can happen and how this is out of your control. It's why I'm quite invested in the game and the story and I'm so glad they're not holding back on the experiences of Cloud so far.

    I mean if I recalled correctly ut ties back to the experiements Hojo did, Cloud was exposed to be a sephiroth clone but “clone” kind of gives the wrong connotations, it’s not that Hojo “created” a person, more like taking a piece of paper to a photocopy machine and printing over it.
    We find out in icicle inn the recording of Gast and iflana (aeriths mother) that when JENOVA infects people with its genetic material it could change their appearance into other people, structure that appearance by the memories of people in the surrounding area to assist it in its infiltration.
    When Sephiroth fell into the lifestream at nibelhiem however sephiroth was able to overpower JENOVAs will and use her abilities to manipulate the JENOVA cells for his own end, so rather then the Reunion recreating JENOVA, sephiroth could use it to recreate himself.
    Hojo recognizing this began making Sephiroth clones to facilitate sephiroths reunion but to give the clones the power needed they had to be sent thru Mako baths like what SOLDIER operators do……thing is Mako baths just DUMP a ton of mystic arcane knowledge into your brain all at once, even if you don’t retain the knowledge it has to pass thru it.
    This has been listed as the most common cause of failure for would be SOLDIER members, there minds just flat out can’t handle it and they get relegated to other postions in the company….cloud being one such people who failed to meet the mental rigidity needed for the operation became a guardsmen
    When Cloud was put under the procedure by hojo to become a sephiroth clone, clouds mind just buckled under it and Hojo just threw him aside as a failure not capable of use to the Reunion
    Thing is the JENOVA cells were already implanted in Cloud and began to work on its mimicry ability only to find out…..it really couldn’t use cloud for anything, his mind was broken to the point it caused his body to be despondent. The only person it could check the mind of for its mimicry was Zack and he already had certainty of Clouds identity.
    I always just assumed Cloud was to broken that sephiroth will didn’t care about him allowing JENOVA to just kind of try and do it’s natural thing, but used what it had available on hand (Zack endlessly chatting up cloud) to repair his Pysche to be of some use. By the time Cloud became conscious JENOVA just rode in the backseat it and Sephiroth nudging clouds subconscious in the direction of reunion

    • @sootythunder3111
      @sootythunder3111 5 месяцев назад +1

      The mimicry is also why in the Northern Crater Hojo believed that Cloud was a mimicry based on Tifas mind, that JENOVA made the mimicry to facilitate to reunion based off of the memories of Cloud in Tifas mind, and created the 1st class SOLDIER persona as a stopgap to cover the growth Tifa mind would have assumed Cloud went thru in those 7 years apart
      ……Hojo just didn’t care enough about viewing his test subjects as Humans because he would have noticed “oh this isn’t a test subject that JENOVA mimicry turned into cloud but “the test subject was just cloud himself”

  • @Maxakari
    @Maxakari 9 месяцев назад +1

    Another thing people may not know about cloud and his memories, is that Cloud has Jenova cells in him.
    What does this mean?
    Well, Jenova has a mimic ability and can read minds, and even transform into others. People with Jenova cells in them have this ability to a minor extent. So the Jenova cells in cloud actually used memories of others to rewrite his own missing ones.
    We can see this in game with the headaches, or in the original scene you showed where he is catatonic, and then the screen flashes which happens to Cloud throughout the story, and then suddenly he becomes way better all of the sudden.
    One of the reasons was also because it WAS Tifa, and she had so many memories about him, but had also met Sephiroth and also Zack. So her memories of him, and Zack were probably mimicked, healing him in a way.
    It is how Cloud knew things he shouldn't have, but because only so much was filled in, and because of his mental state etc. Cloud didn't know some things he should have.

      I called her "T-if-a" since the original back in 97 as a child and I still call Aerith "Aeris." These sorts of things won't change after so many years of pronouncing it as such. There are still people who still consider Pluto a planet even after they decided to say it's not. It may be factually incorrect, but it's reality to them. 🤷🏾‍♂️

    While this video is great and definitely talks about very relevant real world situations that explain Clouds behavior it does seem to ignore the stated in universe mechanics. While it's fun to think about Cloud getting back on his feet because he's so in love with Tifa that he had a dopamine spike, it's been stated that the reason Cloud regains functionality at that point is because Jenova is able to use it's mindreading/shapeshifting abilities to copy an identity from the memories of Tifa.
    While I think that the "real" situation is in the middle, with your explanation tackling the narrative "why" of Clouds behavior, which is most important, the technical "how" explanations of the mechanics are a bit less real world sciency I think and should still be mentioned.

    • @vgology
      @vgology  Год назад +4

      This is actually a very good point and you are right, it is certainly worth mentioning, so I'm glad you brought it up. Due to Jenova being in-universe lore, it would be impossible to study how it would actually affects the brain and its neural pathways.
      However, I would like to think that, as you suggested, the explanation lies in between my analysis and the stated in game lore. Remember, Tifa was not the only person who had memories of Cloud prior to his catatonia. Zack also had memories of Cloud and traveled with Cloud for around a year but Jenova never latched onto those memories to create a persona. It's possible when Jenova observed a dopamine spike it latched onto Tifa's memories and used that as a base for forming Cloud's fake persona.
      Of course Occam's razor, it could certainly just be the in universe stuff, but like you said, it is tremendously fun thinking about the real life psychology of it all.

    • @vgology
      @vgology  Год назад +21

      The mako is definitely part of it but I think Cloud was always naturally strong as well. A couple of things I didn't touch on in my video, I believe its in Before Crisis, Cloud is sent on a mission while still a grunt and demonstrates very strong proficiency with a sword.
      Also Cloud bested Sephiroth while he was a grunt during Nibelheim. Alot of things factored into his victory but during the incident I think Cloud released his subconscious limits (check out a real world concept called hysterical strength, it accounts for those cases you hear about mums lifting cars to save their kids). It's believed that hysterical strength pushes your body to a higher level of what its capable of so Cloud being able to best Shinras strongest is a testament to how strong Cloud always was.
      So then, if Cloud is so strong then why did he fail as a solider? As we see during Hojos test, Cloud is mentally incapable of going through the mako treatment. To become a successful candidate, I believe you need a strong mental fortitude in addition to physical. Cloud has the physical but sadly, his mind was too weak at the time. The forced Mako treatment took his already strong base strength and multiplied it.
      TLDR
      Cloud was always strong physically but weak mentally. He failed the soldier testing because his mind was too weak, not his body. Mako treatment then multipled his already strong base strength.

      @duyataksis5210 Год назад +6

      VGOLOGY laid it out very well, the only thing he missed was the Jenova cells Cloud was injected with post-Nibelheim. Hojo's experiment was essentially the same procedure SOLDIER candidates go through, except at far higher doses and done to completely unqualified people (the black-cloaked Sephiroth Copies are other survivors of Nibelheim Hojo experimented on). That's why Cloud has the superhuman strength and oddly coloured eyes that mark SOLDIER members. It's somewhat ironic that Cloud and Sephiroth draw their strength from exactly the same source: Jenova.

      I know this post is like 4 months old but The reason my client can lift the sword is because he had the Genova cells injected in him too And that's what gave him The strength to do that And the reason why cloud fights like a sack Is because when Client was in Coma when Zack talking to him when they were in the truck. If you're wondering cloud deadline throughout the whole adventure if you were to play disc 3 when he gets his senses back in disc 3He says something along the lines of He heard the stories from his friend Zack and he was under an illusion Which means He lied.

    Another concept you could have brought up here is organ inferiority, or the desire for things you didn't have as a child. One of the most common is desiring to be strong due to weakness in childhood, w/ cloud that surely rings a bell. Then, that ties into him taking on zack's, a person cloud considers strong's, identity.

      Exactly, he was present at the same key moments as Zack and those are the moments he remembered. Also being stuck in a mako tube for years scrambled his brains and naturally, those memories being so persistent, his brain was basically tricked into mistaking them for his own. It’s only after Tifa literally walks him through his past that he finally figures out what really happened.

    This is not a bad video, but using the example of a real life SA victim in conjunction with a male fantasy video game character lacks tact. I love cloud, but mentioning him in the same breath as a women who suffered something so personal is wrong. If ur using real life examples, use examples that don’t deal with such sensitive topics that don’t even relate to the character ur talking about. No where has it being indicated that cloud was SA’d, so including that victim here is far too much.I’m sure u could find an more apt example from war veterans having memory issues, which is far closer to clouds case regardless. Hope you take this input into account for future videos.
