If you provide a decent pasture for your chickens, you won't have to worry about the Omega 3 and 6 ratio. I personally use wheat instead of corn a wheat has slightly more protein and doesn't need to be cracked. Stock up on your wheat from your local mill after the harvest in June/July. How di I protect my birds from predators and yet have a pasture for them? It's easy. Use electric fence cloth with a strong charger and Mini Aussie dogs. Design a pasture with the chicken coops in the center, then next to that pasture you need an auxiliary pasture for the winter. Make sure these two pastures are side be side. I would say 1/2 acre per 10 chickens. Then surround both pastures completely with another round of electric fence cloth for your dog run. (Two boxes inside one box). Have your dog houses inside that outside run. Don't worry, the dogs learn to mind the fence real quick. Why does this work? Well it's obvious why it works on four footed predators but Owls and Hawks get disoriented by the sound of incessant barking in close proximity which is why they avoid dogs int he first place. Trust me when an Owl tries to swoop in the pasture at night, these Aussies go absolutely nuts raising hell. And if a really dumb juvenile Owl happens to drop in, he will quickly fly back out or get tangled in the fence. If any chicken manages to get out you can teach your dogs to herd it back in. I have had ZERO losses with this method. In my area, there are Possums, Raccoons, Bobcats, Bears, Skunks, neighbors dogs, all trying to get a two piece. They ain't gettin jack!
@@gillettefamilyfarm I forgot to mention If a chicken flies into the dog enclosure, they are safe. Mini Aussies will not touch them as long as you don't ever give the dogs raw meat to eat.
I'll check out Salatin's book. One thing I already noticed is the use of soy for the protein. If someone is going through the trouble of making a healthy feed, why use soy? Obviously, you're not eating the soy yourself but it affects the composition of fat on the chickens. It increases Omega 6 presence significantly (instead of omega 3). Humans already have way to much 6 in their diet. A decent alternative are lentils for protein. Helps keep the 3/6 ratio in better balance.
That’s a good question. I use the ground roasted soy because that’s what the vast majority of farmers use. We are fairly new to this so I’ll do some research on soy alternatives.
@@gillettefamilyfarm Lots of information coming out that feeding corn or soy to a non ruminant animal will pile in the omega 6 to the animal. Bummer as this makes raising healthy food more challenging
The problem with lentils is they just don’t have the protein or quality of protein of a roasted soybean. A much better option is high-oleic soybean they come in GMO and non-GMO options. If you’re freaked out about soy in general the best option is to feed them larvae or fermented grains with fish meal but that gets expensive and time consuming.
@@collinlynch4569 Yeah, it's a tough one. Here's the thing about soybeans: When livestock is fed a soy diet, it changes the composition of their fat. Their fat becomes unnaturally high in omega 6 fatty acids, instead of being a good source for omega 3. The Western diet is already completely unnaturally imbalanced by a significant margin of omega 6 to omega 3. Over consumption of omega 6 leads to chronic inflammation of all bodily systems, which is bad for a number of reasons. So, if I am taking the time to raise and self-butcher free range birds, it's a near tragedy to be stuffing their faces with soy.
Great video. I am in the country of Panama. Finding Oats and other things like that is difficult or expensive. Ill have to figure it out :) Thank you for the video.
Hi Gillette.... thanks for the video Can I feed day-old layer chick's with this layers mash, Or is it only meant for ready-to-lay grown layer chicken? Cheers
About 3-4 pounds per day. I have a stainless steel trough feeder from premier one. It holds around 5 pounds of food but I typically only fill it to 2/3 full.
@@gillettefamilyfarm I saw the shirt and thought you were local. But then saw other videos and it was all NY. She come out to Chicago or just Michigan, casino would have been new few years ago.
Haha i even watched a video on how to open those bags and still nope. After i hacked those bags open with a knife,i found pieces of plastic in the bag. Yikes eh?? If you cut the twine in side the opening of the two sides of the bag its not so bad
If I was anybody out there I would not buy no feed from the tractor supply company because they are putting stuff in it that's not making your chicken's legs and the harming your chicken so to all you people out there who go buy their feeds from tractor supply don't do it no more avoid them do not go there for anything boycott tractor supply and any big Box store company that sells seed but instead I suggest that you go to your local food market Mom and pops type and buy your grains and make your own chicken feed that way you know exactly what is in it how much protein how much calcium and what you need for your chickens to give you the best quality meat and best eggs
Not very informative. Half the info is there. Did you guys watch the video before you posted it? Doesn't seem like it. Can't see the scale half the time. Talking at the same time and can't hear what either said about the food. Some info about what adding some things but not others. And finally too long. Stick to the point of the video cuz you guys are not that interesting to watch. Could have been great. Good luck. You have some potential.
Wish you and your family well. You speak genuine.
Thank you!

Seems like the scales could be zeroed to compensate for the tar weight of the bucket. Love the puppy!

Can I feed day-old layer chick's with this layers mash, Or is it only meant for ready-to-lay grown layer chicken?

For day old chicks, replace the whole corn with ground corn and whole roasted soybean with ground roasted soybean.
Also, give them some hard boiled eggs, shell and all. Just mash them up and put them on a piece of newspaper in the brooder
cannot have soy
what do u recommend
I hope this is all Non-GMO??? Corn, cotton and soy are the most heavily sprayed with Glyphosate(Roundup).
At the time, it was not. But we’ve since found a supplier who is all organic and non-gmo
Great job...
There is a Tare button right there on the scale.
How much do you put out per chicken

Adding calcium carbonate might not be necessary with fertrell. Calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate are like the first two ingredients in fertrell.
