Janmashtami, Hindu festival celebrating the birth (janma) of the god Krishna on the eighth (ashtami) day of the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada (August-September). The number eight has another significance in the Krishna legend in that he is the eighth child of his mother, Devaki. Sri Krishna Janmashtami 2023, honours the birth of who is an avatar of Lord Vishnu.
The meaning of the sanskrit word "janmashtami" can be understood by splitting it into the two words, "janma" and "ashtami." The word "janma" means birthand the word "ashtami" means eight; thus, Krishna Janmashtami is the celebration of Krishna's birth on the eighth day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September).
    Janmashtami Celebrations
The whole nation comes together to celebrate the birthday of Shri Lord Krishna with much fervour and enthusiasm. It is quite common to see kids dressed up as little Krishna, people preparing for the plays (also known as Ras Leela) . People also involve in the Dahi Handi celebration by making human pyramids to break the handi of buttermilk. On this day, recitations of verses from the holy books, Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita, are also organised at Hindu shrines.
