The way I see it he just wants the key her father took out of that plant. It is going to be really painful when she learns that he wanted to be with her just to locate and get the key back.
If I'm not mistaken, they spoke about it in previous episodes. He showed up into her life again was because the coin was activated and he needed to retrieve it before the bad guy gets it. His only intentions were to retrieve the coin by getting close to her. When he retrieves it, he will leave her because it's his way of protecting her. He loves her and has been watching her and always been close by her all this time.
He wants to be with her full stop. He may be SAYING he just wants the key, but what he really wants is her. Lots of hints in prior episodes that he's only been holding back because he's afraid she might get hurt. Once he started interacting with her again, there's no way he's going to just walk away, no matter what he tells himself. And you tell me why he has set up his business in her home town.
"Leaving her is the best way to protect her".... This is the reason when Li Teng (Lee) is trying to hide his identity from Ruan Nianchu. Her life is denger because of his secret mission. He genuinely loves her so he wants her to be safe and sound. OMG!! such a sacrifice to protect one's love. Really commendable. ❤
There’s some Stockholm syndrome going with her because he was “her captor” at the beginning. They have been physically attracted to each other since they were in close contact with each other five years ago. (I know he was undercover back then.)
