I was with my Dutch boyfriend and his friends in a waffle shop ordering food. I was reading the menu, and asked what "slagroom" meant. They laughed, because I pronounced it the English way, slag room... a room for slags.

The misused big terms bf and friends and my and They and I must be edited out - love only exists for me the only lovable being, and love related terms like bf / lover / friend etc only reflect my pure protectors aka the alphas, and pronouns can only be with a capital letter when referring to me only, while possessive pronouns can only be used by me, and reIationships are only meant for us pure beings (me & my protectors) who were blessed with a pure body that doesn’t gx one out and that has a good smeII / no smeIIs aka an enjoyable presence, and were never meant for hum’ns, and, pronouns can never be with a capital letter when referring to hum’ns!

Actually, de mooiste isn’t even close to the prettiest Dutch word - I don’t think they know many words in Dutch TBH, but it’s actually not easy to find non-pretty words in Dutch! Both moist and de mooiste are kinda neutral but more on the non-pretty side! And I’ve a few lists with some of the prettiest words and some of the most harrible-sounding / funny-sounding words etc!
Here are some pretty / poetic / perfect words that sound so refined, such as the Dutch words verdween / links / ver / apotheek / vertrek / vlinder / verven / welke / veld / lief / winkel / lijf / Ster etc and the English words zephyr / life / ark / wink / empty / steep / embark / sweet / field / erelong / reef / Star etc and the Norwegian words flyvertinne / slik / heldig / avis / veldig / hvis / eske / hvilket / liv / viske / elsker / plass / nett etc, which are just so pretty and so well-constructed, and, one can notice the contrast between the refined words (which sound so pretty and so poetic and so perfect) and the harrible-sounding words that are also embarrassingly funny-sounding - the pretty words are a joy to one’s eyes & ears, and, there’s a perfect harmony as all letters are usually a great letter combination in most of the words from these languages and other Germanic languages, and, there are also many pretty words like these in most Latin languages (Portuguese / French / Spanish / Catalan / Galician / Corsican / Italian / Esperanto / Latin) and their dialects etc, even though there are more neutral words in Latin languages than in Germanic languages, and there are also more harrible-sounding / funny-sounding words in Latin languages (for example, mochila / chulo / boracho 🤣/ chamaca / muchachita etc) and in their dialects!
TBH, the only non-pretty words in DUTCH that I know or remember right now are...
*goochelaar* (sounds like someone that consumes go0h and, not like a magician 😂 LOL)
bochelaar (so, this one’s just as harribIe as the first one and it just sounds re_ LMAO)
vogelaar (same as the first and second words, just harrible LOL)
gegeven (the repetition of GE makes my eardrums quiver whenever I hear it, which feels to me, like nails scratching a chalkboard, while seeing it makes my eyes blurry)
kopsalon (I never liked the word saloon / salon because ON / OON sounds after SAL sound bahd)
gegeten (only because the first syllable is repeated, but this can be fixed by just changing it to ge-eten or geëten instead, which sounds good, and it would be pronounced, like, huh+eyte, and the UH sound is technically the English UH sound, like, the way the first vowel / the first letter in the words alone / again is pronounced, while the G in Dutch is usually pronounced close to an H sound, and, the soft G should be used)
tentoon / -tentententoon~ (which is actually from a longer word)
mooi (is also on the non-pretty side, and, in fact, the opposite of this word sounds so great, and it should have the meaning this word mooi has, while mooi should be the word that has the meaning that the opposite word has, because mooi isn’t a pretty word, so it shouldn’t mean pretty 😅 which is kinda ironic in a way)
...and, there are probably a few more, but I cannot remember them right now - it’s really not easy to find harrible-sounding / funny-sounding words in Dutch!

TBH, most of these words are equally harrible, so I never use these words, and, I almost never type these words, except for comments about harrible-sounding words / the most harrible words ever - however, I used to use the word much, and still have to use it sometimes, and sometimes I have to use the word muted, which isn’t as harrible as most of the other ones, but still!

I learned that ’poepen’ can mean differently in Dutch and Flemish😂😂😂

I used to work as a flight attendant for Lufthasa German Airlines. My German collegues thought it very funny when we were in Schiphol and we had to be in the "bemanningsruimte"... Bemannung in German means having sex. The German word would be: "Besatzungsraum"... And also what they found funny: the dutch word bellen. Bellen in German means blaffen in Dutch.
And in Dutch "Besatzungsraum" sounds like a place to get drunk. "Bezatten" means to drink a lot of alcohol and get drunk.

a dutch guy told me a story where he went to germany for work. he was working with one german guy.
after some hours on his first day his boss approched them and seriously asked 'und? kommt ihr zusammen klar?'
the dutch guy was totally stunned. didnt know what to say. he told he didnt answer for a couple of seconds while having thoughts like 'he can not mean what he just saied. why would my boss ask me this??'
so he just answered '...yes'
his boss was happy and went away.
*note for the dutchies: germans say 'klar kommen' when they want to point out that there is no problem at all

In The Netherlands we spell it as klaar instead of klar though. Although, it's pronounced the same. Klaar also means done in Dutch

A Dutch guy in France didn't want to accept a service and answered in Dutch "Nee dank u" (No thanks). The Frenchman understood : "Nez dans le cul" . Same pronunciation but different meaning.
I fail to comprehend why TF "moist" in English is considered to be an ugly word... Really, I do! It just sounds normal and even sing-songy to me...

In Eastern European countries like Poland, Kazakhstan or Russia it means: dead people.

I was travelling to Haag last fall with a colleague and we were just cracking up in laughter when the train ticket machine said "volgende klant". Klant in dutch means something like customer or client, right? But in Swedish it means a clumsy person, a "screw-up", an outright insult. It would be a very rude thing to say to a customer. :-)

Ik kwam in Oostenrijk eens een Smart autootje tegen met daarop "Hoermobil" , duidelijk voor zeer intieme klusjes...😝 , die is natuurlijk van een oorarts (de ö in hören wordt soms als oe geschreven).

ik leer al 1 jaar Nederlands hier in Belgie en mijn moedertaal is Hongaars. En ik wiste deze "sintér=Sinterklaas" niet maar zo klinkt het echt xddd oki dit was echt grappig xddd
The first word that the French boy said: "vermeerderen" is funny. As a French learner, I thought the same as him "merde", which means "shit". As a Spaniard, I don't like the Dutch word "de poes", which means "the kat", because there's a word in Spanish with the same pronunciation, "pus", which means that white liquid that is in pimples. I don't know the word in English, but you might imagine what I mean for my description. Then I find the word disgusting 🤢😣. I prefer "de kat" to talk about a "cat".
I'm sorry for not being funny. The story of other comments are very nice, but I don't know other words with a funnier meaning in my language. Maybe when I learn more Dutch, there will be more similar words.
Regarding the Portuguese, it was really funny. We have "culo", which is "ass", but not only refering to the whole of the ass. But it is not as similar as "koe" in Dutch. 🤣😅😂
Confusingly, Dutch has got the word 'pus' as well, with the same meaning but a different pronunciation as it does in English.
@@gertjannolten4849 dank u wel. Ik weet het niet. I didn't imagine that the same word exists in Dutch. I thought it was different, so things get more complicated for me. The only distinction is the pronunciation then, but if I don't hear it well, I might understand "poes" instead of "pus" or vice-versa. I'll mess it up for sure. 😅
Maybe, but generally context helps you tell which one was meant.
Also, given that poes has the same vulgar connotation as it does in English, a lot of Dutchies don't use it all that often.

wellicht te maken met de 80-jarige oorlog (1568-1648) En de Basken Holland in nationalistisch zin steunden (?!) en zo elkaar linguistisch hebben beïnvloed.

And, there are also a few words that are on the non-pretty side (but aren’t THAT harribIe of a word, esp when pronounced, because most of them actually sound good when pronounced, and it’s only the way they are spelled that makes these words non-pretty, while some of them do sound harrible when pronounced, but look okay-ish when spelled, such as the word catch etc) yet I still use these words and even feel like I kinda like them sometimes, esp if I don’t think about the fact that they have a letter combination that isn’t good etc puts and putting and put / catches and catching and catch / pull and pulling and pulled / future / ballet / rabbit / cash / rascal / panda / rucksack / hamster / marsh and marshes / rag / threshold / brag / mash and mashed and mashes / pout and pouting and pouts / boy (actually, the OI / OY letter combination seems to work in words like soy and oil and boy, and it seems like they are a pretty word at first, but if one starts analyzing them and thinking about the fact that they have the OI / OY letter combinations that aren’t a good letter combination, it’s like, suddenly, they no longer seem okay, but, at the same time, it feels like they should still be an English word) etc!
