I was really excited, until he mentioned that countries want to use it as a weapon, I am glad he declined. He is obviously very wise when it comes to this subject. He should write a book about his personal philosophy with technology, it would be really interesting.
You might want to start with Isaac Asimov. His books are all about philosophy of robotics and ethics of artificial intelligence. I believe Mr. Sankai has very similar beliefs, since Asimov has inspired him. He even lays out many of Asimov's more famous books in the video. So for all practical purposes the books you wish for pretty much already exist.
Caduzeus Yes I know about Asimov, I have yet to find one of his books. Thank you for the reference. I was thinking this guys seems to have a more practical and immediate view, he might have something interesting to say. I don't doubt it.
This Japanese guy is right though. It shouldn't be used in military. If all countries just merged into one, you know like on Mass Effect where it's just one name. The Allience? It'd advoid a lot of problems and we'd be able to explore space at a much faster race but NOOOOO doubt these politics pricks don't know that... WELL I wanna be a Prime Minister of some sort now.
This would be the ultimate workout suit seeing as it'll move with 10x more ergonomics than any piece of gym equipment and the resistances could probably be programmed to give varying loads at different intervals.
what would have been more interesting is if the man in the suit stepped out and sat in a wheel chair, then i would be in even more awe......looking forward to giant mechs in the future!
fuck yeah, thats so awesome!! My dream job! too bad I'm not that smart xD and the cyborg 009 was soooo badass, I knew someone in the future would take it as reference, it was incredible
Competition materialized through war is the most wasteful form of human engagement, working together to solve problems the most fruitful, it all depends on what the goal is, I admire the professor for enunciating this and by taking a much needed and rarely seen stance on technology. The ''terminator'' is a bad dream that stems from our fears and our current values extrapolated on current and future tech, Technology is there TO HELP PEOPLE achieve ANY GOAL, The GOAL depends on the PEOPLE.
I agree but even so, why not fuel a value system that promotes scientific progress without the implications of competition? Why not derive satisfaction pragmatically speaking via helping others help us help them.. so on so forth, for the benefit of everyone. Also note i do not endorse the established concept of ''human nature'' for humans can adjust to a wide area of circumstances, Given scarcity people will try to hoard wealth ( the access to that wealth) if, you make scarcity obsolete the need for competition disappears but not the need for social and scientific progress. IMO.
To be brutally honest, beyond possibly very niche rescue and heavy lift/construction applications; this thing would be most at home with light infantry units who would get the most use out of its benefits. Special forces especially. It could allow individual soldiers to enjoy some immunity to relatively powerful forms of small arms fire and force OPFOR to bring heavier weapons to the fight while mitigating or even nullifying the effects of most weapons carried by individuals in places like Afghanistan and Nigeria. The added mobility would also be a huge bonus. Obviously the biggest issue to my knowledge is battery limitations.
I'm sure they've made significant progress towards exosuit tech, but this demo model is less functional than the level of polish would imply. It only seems to assist the elbows and knees, and only when they're in stationary positions. They show it helping to hold up bags of rice, but his arm stays at the same angle the whole time and even stays locked for a time after the rice is removed. There's nothing of substance connecting the legs and arms so the weight is borne by his shoulders and spine.
The inventor is very level headed! I am happy he isn't selling his ideas for military purposes! No more blood! No more wars! No more violence! We MUST focus on using technology ONLY for good now!
Ekso Bionics has a exo-skeleton that can support very heavy loads WITH NO BATTERY. It uses a system of counter-weights to shift the load to the exoskeleton, and could even be used to GENERATE POWER for additional lifting!!!
the legs, torso and arms dont actually look structurally connected, so cant really see it giving significant support over all as is i'm not sure if it's a prototype for something useful or if it's just a gimmick
If this became useful to the military..the military will have it, you won't stop it by saying "no" I could have done with this suit back in 1984 at school, my Robotic dance skills would have been awesome!!! With Daft Punk - Technologic playing in the background.
i agree stewart. we need more scientist like him that want to see mankind progress not digress. individuals like him this gives me hope for our future.
I want to build an exoskeleton with purposes of virtual reality. But I don't understand how Dr. Sankai manages to build an exoskeleton, and have a patent. Everything you publish or make in a university is property of the publisher or the university. How did he manage to get a patent? It seems almost impossible to me in academics to do such thing
yeah that statement threw me off a bit too, its hard to translate both the exact wording and the context in which hes speaking, so we might not have gotten all of what he was trying to say. i have a feeling if you asked him about that he'd say the same thing, that there are plenty of fantastic artists in japan. who knows
cool of him to do, but exoskeletons will be weaponized eventually. U.S is already attempting this. i really hope that exoskeletons will become more mainstream in the medical and construction fields, which would vastly benefit from such technology.
also... I figure militaries would make a bid for this technology this man is making.... but I am sure they have a few moles in his company that have fedex'd a number of designs they could on this project in.... or a few models that have been rented out have "turned up missing" so yeah.... not likely his tech is purely privatized. someone has it by now..... but if it were militarized, it'd be one hell of a performance enhancement for the soldiers wearing it..... all you'd need is armored suits. stronger motors, and you have yourself an iron legion in the making
US military funded what seems to be a "better" exoskeleton for that purpose. Look up Sarcos exoskeleton. Though this point it's powered by wire to be able to perform those strength feats. You CAN use it to load bombs into planes and stuff though I guess.
rasmasyean the point I was making was a self contained internal powered exoskeleton suit which this is.... all this lacks is armoring and motors to put it on par with the sarcos suit........ it's already leaps better in terms of portability and general uses
I seriously doubt this is as strong as what you're thinking. And it prolly lasts like 10 minutes on a charge for heavy lifting. That's not very useful in battle. There's no battery that is better than a combustion engine, which is the kind of power you need, like Big Dog.
rasmasyean erm..... there are electric motors that can fight against a deuce engine...... so yeah, there is no battery strong enough to match it yet. but the hal suit can take a.... we'll say 200lb person and strengthen them to lift another 200lb person with ease..... all you need now is a frame work that can support greater loads, motors strong enough to run it, an battery power to sustain it for more than a few hours at a time..... the hal currently can run up to two hours on a single charge with high use...... and that's a battery the size of which goes on a motor cycle. you COULD supplement them with extra battery power wired in a series around the suit.... the rest is armoring, and making it more durable to impact falls, and the general wear and tear
The one I'm talking about uses hydraulics to accomplish the strength feats. If the motors in this HAL suit can match it, then it's not he suit that's a breakthrough. It's the motor technology, which doesn't currently exist.
One point of disagreement with Prof. Sankai: Japan most certainly has more than a basic foundation for producing art. Indeed, Japan has a well-established history of excellence in numerous arts, from fine to culinary. Japan has been home to sensational performers, like actor Toshiro Mifune and the pianist Mitsuko Uchida. It may be a mistranslation, for all I know, but it's odd that he would make such an assertion. Yes, Japan is a tech giant, but there's plenty of great art going on there, too.
The military does little to aid in the help of others, if you believe it does, well, you're living under a rock. The fact the military is offering to buy his work makes one assume they're not quite up to there yet and if they are, they're still quite a bit behind Japanese robotics. Also, never ever compare the military to search and rescue or firefighters (both of which are volunteer jobs...at least in Australia). I don't usually reply to people on youtube, but that comment was dumb.
Well congratulations! You actually have some involvement with Japan and engineering, good job. I agree, his "pacifism" is obviously based on them getting destroyed after WW2 as it is was dictated to them via the Emperor to follow the occupying powers the US, their actions to do this come from Bushido, following the mandate of Emperor, unquestioned, this being their duty to him and the nation of Japan. The US was shocked that the people surrendered so peacefully, why? Bushido, see Nitobe.
about fucking time. Come people, if we can even use a drone type of exosuit and use for Califronia fires or even clean the Nuclear waste at Fukushima. Damn if we can make this happen.
Company called Cyberdine
Suit called HAL.
Not suspicious at all.
In all seriousness though, this is awesome.
0:33 Ha! Cyberdyne! Like in Terminator! We're doomed!
At least morally He's ahead of the Boston Dynamics.
Sure. Tech inovations are created to help people not to kill them I absolute agree with him
A company called Cyberdyne
Making a exoskeleton
Called HAL
Okay sure
Lets build a metal gear after hal can walk
I was really excited, until he mentioned that countries want to use it as a weapon, I am glad he declined. He is obviously very wise when it comes to this subject. He should write a book about his personal philosophy with technology, it would be really interesting.

Americas is already developing exosuits to be used by our already deadly special forces operators.
"HAL".Can't wait til they come out with the model 9000...
he made the right choice for not sharing this tech for military use...hope he be safe tho.
but he only managed to delay the inevitable by perhaps a decade.
Perfect ending with regards to military use!
I love his honesty and matter of factness. Great interview!
Dude actually has a NEXT workstation at 1:42
Really glad to see a company with a good moral compass... Pretty few and far between these days!
The professor is so soft-spoken... He barely talks in a whisper.
What he said at the end about his reason to decline military offers was very important. We need more scientists who think this way.
The robot suit shows up at 09:24.
fuck yeah, thats so awesome!! My dream job! too bad I'm not that smart xD

I wish most scientists were like this man...
Creating machines to kill or hurt someone is more or less 'assisted' murder.
To be brutally honest, beyond possibly very niche rescue and heavy lift/construction applications; this thing would be most at home with light infantry units who would get the most use out of its benefits. I love the fact that he named his company after the one from The Terminator.
What do you expect? The guy looks like he never left the 1980's
I'm sure they've made significant progress towards exosuit tech, but this demo model is less functional than the level of polish would imply.

what a great guy need more dudes like this behind inventions although keeping it from the military will be hard
May this device to be available to everyone soon.
If this became useful to the military..the military will have it, you won't stop it by saying "no"
I could have done with this suit back in 1984 at school, my Robotic dance skills would have been awesome!!!

some parts sound like, ghost in the shell.

I like how it says Cyberdyne on his door
what a great guy, almost no engineers remember the oath they swear to when they graduate but he did.
The day these are used by everyday people is the day I'm long dead or I'm shitting gold.
I would've laughed if at the end (11:17) the guy smashes a hole in those doors.
What came first, Cyberdine from Terminator or this Cyberdine company?
Hi, by any chance lite weight to elders to back on foot kind product available.
Wait did that suit fanny pack say Cyberdyne? Where is my Harley and sawed off shotgun? lol and HAL? really? THis guy is right out of a scifi novel.
8:24 it says CYBERDYNE! (from terminator) We're dead!
yeah that statement threw me off a bit too, its hard to translate both the exact wording and the context in which hes speaking, so we might not have gotten all of what he was trying to say. i have a feeling if you asked him about that he'd say the same thing, that there are plenty of fantastic artists in japan. who knows
Is that a bong on his desk?
I need the compact one, for my legs.
I highly doubt that these will be affordable for those who live in the west though.
that's a wicked bong on his desk
Heavy Labor Armor
Hey man, what car is that in your picture?
So... he works for Cyberdine and is making a robot named HAL... Is anybody else think this might be epic foreshadowing?
What about the hands and wrists?
and, thankfully, he's a humanitarian :)
Damn and i was happy as a child having a computer with spell checker lol cant wait this guy is a genius...
He insists he won't entertain military offers yet he names his outfit "Cyberdyne"?
Can it open the pod bay door?
Awesome stuff.
Thank you
the brotherhood of steal armor is just their version of the generic "power armor".
It's a sad fact that every advancement we as a species create is a duel edged sword.
3:51 is alsoslender
This concept will one day lead into the creation of a human Juggernaut.
I want a television show where humans fight robots.
This is my idea for the use of advanced robotics technology.
really cool video
0:34 lol Cyberdyne ^^
Cue the SKYNETU OF JAPAN!
Apparently, they don't show T2 enough in Japanese theaters.
yay motherboard
we'll see swat teams with these suits soon imo.
cool of him to do, but exoskeletons will be weaponized eventually. U.S is already attempting this.
i really hope that exoskeletons will become more mainstream in the medical and construction fields, which would vastly benefit from such technology.
"i cant name specific countries" It's the US of course
The guy in the white's fanny pack says "CYBERDYNE"... This is where it starts.
"i cant nam specific countries" It's the US of course
He probably means it in a relative sense.
These guys are making a suit named hal. Their company is named cyberdyne. Do these scientists get off on tempting fate?!

HAL What a name.
It's not even a full suit. We might even get Master Chief suits yo!
2:40 to skip the foreign lecture youre welcome.

Anyone else notice its a HAL made by Cyberdyne? Both infamous film references. World domination anyone?
I wouldn't say generic. Its the legit version of power armor with spray painted BoS logos on it
Cyberdyne and HAL in an alternate universe.
Well congratulations! You actually have some involvement with Japan and engineering, good job. That has to be Japanese humour; the silver pouch on the front of the suit with a 'Cyberdyne' logo printed on it ('Terminator' films).
soon there will be a T-800 model and we're doomed
Now that's Innovation
Brotherhood of Steel armor
He has a nice bong.
Oh God, Slender has an exosuit.
this guy is great!
so it has begun "Cyberdyne" lucky i'm not around in 100 or more years...
2:25 Of course he has a karate diplom. :L
I think it's really big for walking on the streets or something like that. But it could be a good help. (sorry for my bad english :D)
Cyborg 009 inspired me too. I am building a project coming soon 2016
about fucking time. Come people, if we can even use a drone type of exosuit and use for Califronia fires or even clean the Nuclear waste at Fukushima.
Damn if we can make this happen.
put some ceramic armored plating and wham!
how noble
Wait a sec. He works for cyberdine?? Is that not the people who created terminators
They would probably limit the movement so that doesn't happen
i swear if i hear another terminatior song on one of these videos imma off myself
Skip to 11:19 to see him actually using the robotic skeleton.
hugh respect for this mam!
