They're just next level. The 4Minute/Blackpink formula is much simpler than that. But yeah, I get what you mean, 2NE1 and Blackpink are both produced by Teddy after all, so maybe he's the one that deserves credit for that trend
remember Crazy came out late 2015 and Hate came out in 2016 and Blackpink debuted in Aug 2016. so really it was back to back. i remember being blown away with 4minute comeback for Crazy and Hate. they had always been those girlies to me but Hyuna was pushed hard by Cube. not to hate on Hyuna bc she was a force to be reckon with. but i felt like Cube had stepped it with 4minute. only for them to dump 4minute and just resign Hyuna. i agree that Blackpink came in and took the cute bad girl spot. real quick too. I have my opinions about how the Korean legal system handled these cases and everyone involved, but what I want to point out here is that there was a lot of misinformation surrounding this situation. If we’re going to have a negative opinion about Hyuna’s behavior in this situation (as I do), it should be based on what actually happened.
He gagged with Hate. It's not my favorite 4minute song, but when it came out... I was replaying it all the time. And I actually used to go to college wearing kinda the same outfit, the red sweater, jeans and the construction shoes... oh, I was FEELING myself. Obviously no one in college knew that I was copying them lol
Love it or hate it, ppl always react strongly to Hate. lol. 4minute were my faves bc while they could do chic, cute, sexy, fierce, etc, they always had like a tough edge to them. a vibe they had regardless of concept. 4minute came before the term "girl crush" which is what many would describe them as today, but back then they were described as "korea's female warriors" in media. they were also described as being chameleons, as they could adapt to any concept and make it believable and their own. It's a pipe dream, but i'd really love for them to do a killing voice. i'll tune in even if it's a decade from now, lol.
By the way, 4minute has a sub-unit called 2YOON, featuring members Gayoon (the main vocalist) and Jiyoon (the short-haired girl and the one with glasses in “Hot Issue”). They explored a musical genre unlike anything ever done in K-pop before (I won’t spoil what genre it is), and it’s incredibly fun!

In 2021, nearly 10 years after the sub-unit’s debut, she invited Gayoon (the other sub-unit member-they are VERY close friends) to collaborate on the song “SOOP” as a gift for the fans. 💚

And now look at the BP formula, an example would be HYLT. How hypocritical. That's why I will always say that 2NE1 and 4MINUTE are one of the best groups of that generation. What's wild and sad about Hate is that it's their final song. They disbanded after it's release. Even before it released, they publicly said that whether they would renew their contracts as 4Minute would depend on the track's performance. Weird since their previous comeback, Crazy, did fantastic (#2 in Korea and #2 in US World) but they were thinking of disbanding anyway. Anyway, Hate ended up one of their less popular releases in Korea (#13) but fantastic internationally (#2 in US World). Then they disbanded. I wonder what the _real_ reason is then. Struggling to work as a group, after all these years? Everyone wanted to focus on solo careers? Frustrations that Hyuna become a superstar while the rest didn't? All the above? Who knows. RIP 4Minute, you are missed and your influence on music and MVs is still felt to this day. o7
from what the members said in interviews (mainly jiyoon and jihyun), they did not know they were disbanding. they said that cube planted info that they were disbanding to the press, gave a fake statement of "we're looking into this", to make it look like the members besides hyuna decided not to renew, when really they had canceled the members' contracts as a group, and was pretending they didn't know about it. they found out through the press like everyone else. very believable with how cube handled the hyuna/dawn situation years later. They then offered individual contracts to some of the members, but not all. Cube had recently gotten a new CEO, as well as formed a partnership with a new company IHQ, so there was some sort of internal fighting going on that we don't really know the details of and 4minute got caught in the crossfire. Jihyun heavily implied that the other members wanted to leave the company and stay as a group under either their own company, or find new management, but since Hyuna was going to stay they didn't go through with that. Info to take with a grain of salt, but their fansites at the time were saying that hyuna was staying bc she was in a relationship with someone at cube and didn't want to leave bc of them, so she stayed, and the other members were upset bc it was a relatively new relationship that they felt they were being ditched for. This was said way before her and dawn had went public, and ppl didn't really believe it at the time. However looking back, the timeline checks out. Jihyun later said that as a group that they prbly would have only lasted a few more years anyway, so she's let go of that hurt as of now, although it took her a while.

from what the members said in interviews (mainly jiyoon and jihyun), they did not know they were disbanding. they said that cube planted info that they were disbanding to the press, gave a fake statement of "we're looking into this", to make it look like the members besides hyuna decided not to renew, when really they had canceled the members' contracts as a group, and was pretending they didn't know about it. they found out through the press like everyone else. very believable with how cube handled the hyuna/dawn situation years later. They then offered individual contracts to some of the members, but not all. Cube had recently gotten a new CEO, as well as formed a partnership with a new company IHQ, so there was some sort of internal fighting going on that we don't really know the details of and 4minute got caught in the crossfire. Jihyun heavily implied that the other members wanted to leave the company and stay as a group under either their own company, or find new management, but since Hyuna was going to stay they didn't go through with that.
Info to take with a grain of salt, but their fansites at the time were saying that hyuna was staying bc she was in a relationship with someone at cube and didn't want to leave bc of them, so she stayed, and the other members were upset bc it was a relatively new relationship that they felt they were being ditched for. This was said way before her and dawn had went public, and ppl didn't really believe it at the time. However looking back, the timeline checks out. Jihyun later said that as a group that they prbly would have only lasted a few more years anyway, so she's let go of that hurt as of now, although it took her a while.
I love their iconic upbeat songs BUT my favorite song will always be "Cold Rain" 🤌
