  • Today, on August 28th, the NWS and SPC placed much of the northeast in a slight risk for severe weather activity. All day, the weather was very pleasant, with sunny skies and temperatures hovering above in the lower 90s with moderate humidity. These conditions would prove crucial for the development of severe thunderstorms for later in the evening, with some isolated thunderstorms beginning to develop and form a squall line over parts of northeastern Pennsylvania
    Towards the late afternoon and early evening, this line of thunderstorms began to become much more organized and also began to strengthen as the line began to push southeast out of northeastern PA and began making their way east into New Jersey where they encountered more atmospheric instability due to the high amounts of daytime heating. By around 8:00 tonight, the storms had merged together to form one giant system that began to produce gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and above all else, very powerful and constant lightning both intracloud and dangerous cloud to ground. The system began to close in on my location in Somerville, NJ, and I just so happened to be directly in the path of the most dangerous and damaging part of the storm. It was extremely intense.
    The thunderstorm system itself was quite spectacular with loads of heavy lightning and very gusty winds as well as torrential rain fall. In fact, the lightning was so constant and intense that I personally didn't feel safe. Some lightning bolts actually struck very close to me. Nevertheless, I continued documenting this massive thunderstorm system. Just as quickly as it arrived, it began to move on to the east and began impacting areas beyond me. On the radar, the system began to turn a hard right and began moving from the southeast to east directly before moving out to sea, where it then began to weaken and eventually died out after encountering abundant amounts of cooler sea air. This is one of the best storms that I have seen this year.

    That storm was really impressive looking over that area & that's some great footage you got! Surprised the power didn't go out, but I think Somerville is PSE&G, JCP&L had a number of outages.

      Yes, it was a massive thunderstorm. Most of Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties are PSE&G. I live in Middlesex, NJ, and we have them as our power company. PSE&G has pretty good electrical infrastructure. The lightning was insane. It was definitely one of the greatest lightning shows in recent times. Would love to see it again.

    I felt that thunderstorm go through here in nearby Manville Borough (I'm near Wally World). That was a nasty sqall line of severe storms! BTW - Great video! 👍

    That was a wicked storm we had tonight. I live in Metuchen, and a lot of tree limbs were blown down and scattered everywhere. That lightning was really scary and looked to close for comfort.

      Yes, it was a terrifying storm. I could only imagine the impact that this storm had on Metuchen. There are plenty of trees out there, and I'm sure the streets were littered.

    • @DynamicDuo795
      @DynamicDuo795  13 дней назад

      I don't actually know for sure. But I'm guessing it was high in certain areas. This was a rather fast-moving storm, so rainfall totals would vary from place to place. It rained very heavily at first when this line first moved through. Once it began, pushing further east rainfall began to lessen. There was flooding in some places that night.
