I love Zenitsu so much and I really like how this scene shows his character and I think some people miss how it shows that he really isn’t a coward. At least not what I’d consider a coward. The whole time he’s with the kid, while his is absolutely terrified, he always keeps the kid his first priority. Once the demon shows up Zenitsu runs with the kid even though he can definitely run faster then him, keeps him in front, pulls him out of the way of being attacked, keeps himself between them and even tells the kid to leave him behind because he’ll just slow him down. Even though he was so scared it kept him from fighting like anyone else and held him back, he always kept the kids safety first and from anybody, let alone someone so absolutely terrified, that is something incredibly brave.
I agree but he is a coward, a smart one tho. We see in his back story he was struck by lightning and passed out. When ever he is sleeping or knocked out and someone is in danger he turns on his beast mode. He doesn’t have the strength with him while awake and we see that during all his fights. He passes out then wins

Re-watching this scene after you watch episode 17 makes it even better because you realize that although this is our first time watching Zenitsu fight, this is probably his 10,000th time performing that move - he’s got that shit down to a T, his form is textbook. One could even argue…Hashira level. Yes maybe not really Hashira level since he still has much to learn but I’d argue its close, as he WAS trained by the former Thunder Hashira and the demons always comment on his presence when he assumes that stance
i agree. zenitsu still has a lot to learn such as mastering his breathing to the point where he can do it naturally but you can argue that for just the 1st form, his mastery and technique surpasses any thunder breathing swordsmen before him - including his master, a former thunder hashira.
Well I can say that only his Stance and form are completely perfected here, the strength behind those slashes will keep increasing as the series progresses. Then soon anime only fans will see something beyond imagination.
In my head, the narrative is that Zenitsu's anxiety and overthinking makes him afraid and useless, but when he's asleep and his brain no longer has those inhibitions, his breathing, repetitive training, muscle memory, and instinct fully takes over and displays an overwhelming force of destruction.

I love how people were calling him coward and pathetic, and after this scene they suddenly changed their mind. Regardless of his actual prowess, he seemed like someone who made brave decisions when it involved others or something higher than him, and I respect that. I would expect people to cower in fear if you invited them to slay demons. He sure is able to move when it involved others while thinking to himself that he's weak. He simply needs someone to comfort whatever inner fears he has, empower him, and elevate him just like his grandfather did. I respect him for not giving up on his grandson. Zenitsu was drowning in debt due to some woman that tricked him and this old man took iver his debt when he saw him getting threatened by the loan sharks. In exchange Zenitsu had to become his student. And since his sensei was one of the hashira, him taking on debt so he can have this random kiddo as his student must mean he saw some ridiculous talent there. So in short, they are not related, but he's like a grandpa to Zenitsu, so that's what he calls him.
