      Honestly, when Sonic Forces came out, I joked for some months about it being the long awaited sequel to Sonic Chronicles (since Eggman took over the world in Forces, and Chronicles ends on a sequel bait cliffhanger wherein Eggman took over the world).

      @@mawdewile According to the Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia, it has been "dropped from official canon", so Emerl's origins are once again a mystery. As for why, since a certain comic writer would most likely try to sue if the story was ever concluded, and considering how the game didn't do the greatest, I think Sega thought it was best to just cut the dangling threads, so to speak. That being said, The Nocturnus Gate is a stage in one of the Winter Olympic Games...

    • @helfire14
      @helfire14 8 месяцев назад +57

      If you want the reason as to why it was rendered non-canon, it's because they can't legally talk about it.
      In short, there was this guy called Ken Penders who used to work on the sonic comics and became strangely obsessed with the echidna tribe, to the point he created a ton of original tribes and many, many echidna OCs. He eventually got kicked out for trying to claim the copyright for Knuckles.
      However, Sonic Chronicles the Dark Brotherhood happened to have an Echidna tribe that bore great resemblance to one of the ones he came up with, so he immediately took the opportunity to take SEGA to court. After the legal dispute, both sides agreed to a sort of cease fire on the grounds of Sonic Team never acknowledging Sonic Chronicles and any of the concepts introduced in it ever again.

    Additional fun fact for those who haven't seen Sonic X(Spoilers however)
    When Emerl goes crazy with power at the end of the story, it's portrayed as Emerl having the moves of every character who fought him before with the ability to perfectly counter and beat them. This includes Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge and some of the human extras. The only one who could counter him and the one to ultimately destroy him was none other than Cream The Rabbit because she and Cheese could double-team him in ways he couldn't predict because until that point, Cream had been a non-combatant. Cream literally has to kill Emerl herself and it's somehow even sadder than how Emerl goes out in the game.

    • @ThisisTheUltimate
      @ThisisTheUltimate 8 месяцев назад +36

      Sonic X definetly feels sadder in the way the scene is composed, but I think Battle's one is a lot easier to feel connected into and feel sad for Emerl
      Emerl in Sonic X was really simple and basic, as for Battle, all the cast created him, basically raised him since he was like a child, he slowly learned how to talk, to have fun, and got close to everyone, until Sonic had to defeat Ultimate Emerl, so I feel more connected to Emerl in Battle, which makes the scene where he is destroyed more impactful on the GBA

Also, I don't think Chronicles is canon, or even has been for a while. I don't blame Sega and Sonic Team for ignoring it though, mostly cause of that one guy that the Sonic community would rather not talk about. I get Vanilla isn't a fighter in any form, but I hate that she's not in almost any Sonic game, being more present in Sonic X than the games. While the Colosseum/Phi Battle reference in Nonagression is correct, I think the reference is more towards Sonic Battle's Emerl's Theme, as both Phi Battle and Nonaggression take their leitmotifs from there. Well, that was what was assumed until IDW came out. There, Gemerl speaks and he's very obviously not Emerl.
      It's most obvious via comparing his appearances in Archie and IDW, both written by Ian Flynn.
      Archie Gemerl: Buddy, what I *want* is to live peacefully. But you just had to come to my town and cause a fuss. So, instead, I'll make you rest in peace!
      IDW Gemerl: Request acknowledged. Proceeding to assist village defences to protect Cream, Vanilla, and family.
      In Archie, he talks with similar cadence as Emerl's fully-formed self does once he has all of the Emeralds, but before he goes nuts. He's brash and confident and heroic. He has a similar character to Sonic, because that's who raised Emerl, but he's also got Shadow's focus and more serious attitude, in-keeping with Shadow being the other most important person in Emerl's life. Archie's Gemerl is indeed a reborn Emerl, as was generally assumed by the fandom for the 10 years between Advance 3's release and SEGA finally letting Ian actually use him in the comics.
      In IDW (which we have good evidence is more tightly controlled by SEGA, so may be more accurate to how SEGA see the character), he's a robot. He talks flatly, in an obvious monotone, and drops whole words, describing his own actions before he does them. He's the most generic robot to ever robot. You could give his dialogue to any other robotic character and it wouldn't be out of place.
      Even the speech bubbles tell a story. Archie Gemerl has rounded bubbles and the same text font as the rest of the characters. IDW Gemerl has square bubbles and a 'techno-ish' font, for lack of a better term.

    To go further on what the game counts as "special move" for the sake of the Rouge challenge, some of the overpowered cheat code power specials don't count (i.e. shadow's) also don't count as special moves because they are simply a large brutality style strings of normal attacks followed by a rush attack. Others like sonic's will count because it ends in his shot special

    So, turns out the Japanese version of Sonic Battle contains a full English version. For whatever reason during the GBA era SEGA would release games with both English and Japanese localizations included (The minna de puyo puyo/Puyo Pop game on GBA has both, I own the Japanese version that I picked up while I was in Japan complete in box, it has both languages, and I imagine they only changed the name of Satan in the western version). The Japanese English version includes some mild swears on the level of Shadow the Hedgehog. So I'm guessing the localizers just took out the words to make it get an E rating rather than E10+ or T (I don't remember if E10 existed by then)
    I do speak enough Japanese to be able to probably release a translation patch that fixes the actual errors, but this game is such a slog, I would have trouble play testing to make sure my changes didn't cause any other issues.
    This is definitely a contender for a game that would benefit from a remake with more depth to the combat (you know, the actual game play...) and maybe cut down the length a bit and release it as a Switch game or something. Knowing SEGA they'd probably just have it re-release on the Nintendo Switch Online service. I'm not enough of a fan of this game to do that kind of thing myself. (Nor am I knowledgeable enough with programming currently, I can really only make glorified calculators and automation tools and database queries)

    3:04 Did you get that skill by chance? I guess it's Shadow's ??? skill. I only have two of them. It looks insane. Hopefully I get it one day.
    3:55 I didn't think of it that way. But yes, the ball can't be blocked. It makes Emerl's ground shot extremely overpowered by dealing about 1/3 of the enemies' health.
    Here's something I am absolutely sure I encountered as a kid. I play the German version, but some of the skill descriptions were in French. Then I switched to French and they were in German. On the same cartridge, I can't reproduce it. I don't get it.
    Anyway, I learned a few new things here. Thanks, man. I really like this game and I think it's a shame it's often overlooked.
    Here are two more things I find interesting. First, Emerl has two front side sprites. One where his third eye is closed and one where it's open. Secondly, there is a way to win battles within a few seconds in challenge mode. I forgot the source or the details, but basically when you perform certain steps you can skip some battles. I don't know what the deal with that is.

    Emerl's lack of actual tangible appearances despite being occasionally referenced is probably down to two things:
    1) He's dead. SEGA are extremely particular about dead characters. If someone died, then unless they become massively popular (Shadow), then dead is dead, even for adaptations. This is partially why Mephiles and Iblis were never allowed to appear in Archie, besides oblique references and cameos, and the encyclopedia saying "Yeah 06 happened and erased itself off-screen", and why Infinite hasn't appeared in IDW. Those characters, like Emerl, are officially killed off and won't appear again. The lone exceptions to this are the Zeti, who are all seemingly killed off in Lost World, only to (unfortunately) return repeatedly in subsequent games and comics. So yes, all the cool dead characters stay dead (except Shadow, who was too popular to die) and the shitty dead characters get to be resurrected. You can't have Emerl or Mephiles but you _can_ have Dollar Tree Bowser.
    2) The _way_ Emerl dies runs counter to the way they want to present Eggman in particular. Like, Eggman _kills_ Emerl. Indirectly and unintentionally, but nonetheless, Eggman attempts to reset Emerl and steal him away from Sonic, and instead of causes Emerl to unleash his Ultimate mode and trigger Gerald's failsafe, killing him. And "Eggman killed Sonic's robot son" decidedly does not fit with the way current material is trying to present Eggman as a somewhat wholesome family man. It's a step too dark for them, so rather than do anything with Emerl they just shove him in the corner and only make occasional passing references to him.

    You know, looking back at how secretly influential Emerl and Gizoids became after Sonic Battle, I'm surprised they weren't revisited as a concept for Sonic Forces. Instead of having a random civilian with no form of training taking up arms, they could've just reused the Gizoid concept for it as the player Avatar character. They are after all highly customizable and trainable as proven by Sonic Battle. Could've simply just made it that they found old archive data of the Gizoid plans on Dr. Eggman's database from the creation of Gemerl in the past and make another Gizoid on their side. Such a missed opportunity.

I was kinda struggling with knuckles until I figured out I could spam Emerl's set move non-stop until he got KO'd.
    Also because it felt like Emerl was just waving their hand and killing the opponent instantly like some kinda infinitely powerful god when the ichikoro gague did its instakill thing.
    Also Power is the only one that is actually affected by the block thing, most likely because instead of being Sonic's attack with a thing removed, it's just sonic's attack but crummy.

    Is likely that the localization team just didn't double check the script.
    I played both versions and the only difference I could find in the japanese english script is that some of the descriptions of the Emerl-exclusive techniques (Like the combos) have a placeholder text instead of being translated. It reads "A mysterious special skill. The effect of this skill has only been heard of in legends."

    Some Skills in this game also have wrong names due to the original names being english words spelled phonetically in Japanese that also happen to ressemble other English words:
    - Both Sonic and Cream have Air Action moves called Sonic/Cream Ballet. The original names for the moves, according to the wiki, is "ソニックバレット" or "Sonikku Baretto" in romanji, which is most likely supposed to mean Sonic (and Cream) *Bullet*. Although that one is somewhat understandable since the two words are incredibly similar even in english and even moreso when spelled in Japanese (Google translate even thinks I'm trying to say "valet" when I remove the Sonic part);
    - Rouge's dash skill named "Rouge Grind" in English is called "ルージュグライド Rūjuguraido", which is a lot more clearly trying to say "Rouge Glide". This one is even weirder because even the description even says that she's "Gliding at low altitudes". But then there's also Knuckles's air action that's called "Grinder attack" in both English and Japanese, yet the description also says that he's Gliding like Rouge. So that might be where the confusion came from;
    - Cream's third attack is called "Chao Salom" which, afaik, isn't an English word. The Japanese name is "チャオスラローム Chaosurarōmu", aka "Chao *Slalom*". That one is a lot more clear cut but to be fair, they might have actually understood what the word was supposed to be but just misspelt it (like a lot of words in this game).
    - Probably the funniest one is Rouge's Ground Power "Silent Size". For the longest time I couldn't understand what that was supposed to mean. That is until recently when I found out it's Japanese name is "サイレントサイズ Sairento Saizu", aka "Silent *Scythe*. Which makes way more sense regarding it's description of "a Powerful High Kick that can split an opponent in half". It's honestly so weird that they ever thought that "size" made even the slightest bit of sense within this context, but it is still really funny.
    And that's about it. There's also Knuckle's Upper action called "Enrage" in English and "Tea Table Flip" (チャブダイガエシ Chabudaigaeshi) in Japanese, but that one feels like just an odd translation choice rather than an actual mistake.
