It was the New Hop Pole. Irish Jerry was landlord. Used to go in before Albion home games in the 90s and 00s.

Who remembers. Rothwells Pickles which used to be on the corner of Sandwell Road and Bratt Street? When you walked past there the smell of pickled onions nearly knocked you out! And when I came home from school on the bus at 4 o’clock some of the women who worked there got on and stank the bus out! Also, you were right when you said that there used to be tennis courts where the car park is by Highfields House.

My grandad was born at 43 Bratt Street. Don't know if that house still survives?

The New Hop Pole was my local back in the mid 80’s when I lived in WB. Theresa and Gerry were the landlords. A great pub with characters like Paddy Dalton, Kevin Morrissey, The Yank, Patsy Lynch, Kevin Murphy who all used to drink. As you can tell by the names it had a big Irish clientele. Many a game of pool I had in the back room with my good mates Jet, Daz (RIP) Rah, Simo, Pampy, Cockney Fred. Also enjoyed many a game of snooker in The Albion snooker club that was across the road from the Hop Pole.

We used to go to the old crown, early 80s when we were rockers, it saddens me to see it all change and no for the best, I think the labour club was next door

Yes indeed it was, right on the corner of Sandwell Road the building is still there and it used to house some law courts as well. The UBO merged with the DHSS back in the early 90s and all moved into that swanky place next to Highfields House

Walking along Sandwell Rd from the high street, on the right was the Church Tavern and Carters porcelain. Then the Gardens of Remembrance with air raid shelters below conker trees, now disappeared. Where the car park is ,were the tennis courts.
Further along past Bratt St was where the Sandwell Cinema was on the right. It was a chapel in the 1800’s then a theatre prior to being a cinema. Opposite before the Sun garage was the labour club, the new houses are there now.
