This brings back some great memories for me. The only pianist of this group I did not see tear it up in concert was Walter Bishop, Jr. Anyone who saw the Tony Williams Quintet with Mulgrew on piano or Horace Silver's band featuring Tom Harrell on trumpet and Bob Berg on tenor saxophone remembers how wonderful they were. It was be an understatement to suggest that John Hicks was amazing leading Betty Carter's trio and the Pharaoh Sanders Quartet.

Do we realize that the trait among great artist shared?
they always are humble ,considering the level they reached. They always speak in positive of others and their peers.
Such a great man, great artist,, great human being. RIP Mulgrew Miller

Thanks for the videos, Bret! Another pianist who absolutely floored me was Hilton Ruiz (1952-2006).

My pleasure. I knew Hilton, heard him with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Loved his amalgam of Jazz and Latin music.

@@JazzVideoGuy I attended an amazing concert of George Coleman's Quartet, featuring Hilton, at San Francisco's Keystone Korner.

Great video, Mulgrew's personality comes through very clearly ( I knew him well)
Especially great comments about John Hicks (severely underrated) and of course he's absolutely right about Bud (without a peer)
    Thanks Bret!

I know Horace's son, Greg very well. We played together in NYC in many different outlets. He's just as funky as his old man. A natural In every way

There’s an interview with Mary Lou Williams from as early as 1956, where she said the first ones to play bebop were Monk, Charlie Christian, Kenny Clarke and two or three others. Then after these came Bird, Dizzy and Bud. I wonder if Monk doesn’t get enough credit for his role in bebop, he seems overshadowed by Bird and Dizzy these days.

i think thats because monk's style is rooted around himself and no other, he was perfectioning a kind of playing that we as listeners dont have accoured that hard to Bebop style, such as other master musicians like bird or Bud. Dont get me wrong i enjoy every kind of playing that era developed, but im talking about the sound and the imaginative approach that i go is BEBOP for those second gamers. But when i think of the old dirty guys at minton's around the early 40's (like Klook) i just go other way in my imagination. i like this comment how cleaver you've decided to analyze the jazz critics today Juan. saludos de chile
