That's a pretty sick homelab setup! My primary PC also has an Asus Z87 Pro motherboard and 32 GB Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 1600! Well, now I have 24 GB of RAM because one of the modules failed. I used to need more but it isn't that big of a deal for me now. Also I have an Intel i7 4790 (without k) on the Z87 motherboard. I did not think anyone had a computer with specs that close! I used to have an i5 4670k until I realized I needed VT-d, so I switched for the i7. I recently built a rackmount server just a couple weeks ago because I was using an Intel NUC to learn homelab stuff, but I wanted to get experience in a rackmount case (whole other ballgame to PC cases) and also have a more permanent homelab services setup. Also, I built my main PC 8 years ago (still running great) and I kind of missed the fun process of doing that, so the server was another excuse. I have a good place by my desk too for the rackmount. No racks (at least yet). It works pretty well for the limited usage so far. I'm very aware about how setups can constantly change. I had no idea I would ever do a rackmount case, but here we are! I've hardly had any chance to use the server yet, but I'm hoping to set it up relatively soon (will need serious blueprint type planning). I'm after having high functionality with a single unit for a reasonable budget, so it will probably do quite a lot for a single machine.
maaaan, the NetApp disk shelf you used,.... waw. Haven't seen it in homelabs many times, but it's great. I am working with NetApp servers for 15+ years and it's great. :)

Slick setup sir! My home lab "grew up" late last year. It all started with Raspberry Pis. I also now have a Dell R710 but I put dial X5675's clocked at 3.06ghz. 92GB of ram and 4x 300gb 15k RPM SAS drives. I also wanted POE and found a great deal on a HP 3500yl 48 Port POE switch. My battery backup just came in this week. It's a 1500va APC. My current rack is an old entertainment center, I'll get a real rack eventually!
Looks awesome Tim. When I grow up some day (I'm already over 40... sigh) I can only dream to have a setup like this. Thanks for the inspirational and very informative content, it's helped me get going with docker and is really pushing me to get more of a home lab going. Keep it coming!
Good tour. Love seeing what people are doing with their systems. I finally picked up a 22U rack on wheels, built out my regular PC into a 4u rack mount case (similar to yours) but all of my network drives are running in that case which also runs my Blue Iris video manager. Pretty much over driving that system so when I am running Blue Iris and it is recording motion while I am doing other things, I will see the load on the CPU get pretty heavy. Will figure out how to separate that out in the future. I have a 2u case that is running Proxmox and virtual servers/docker containers. I need to upgrade the CPU and memory, but it is doing the job so far. I did add a NavePoint 2u lockable drawer and man does that help keep stuff together and not getting lost! For the networking part I have my modem which connects to my NetGear router. Since I started using Ubiquiti AP's, the wireless portion of the router isn't used and really I could probably move over to a software router, but just haven't yet. I've used pfSense in the past, but only long enough to play around with it and not very competently to be honest. I have a Lutron hub attached so I can control all of my various room light dimmers via Amazon Echo. I have 2 24 port patch panels (I used 2 panels so I could put one above and one below the switches for short run patch management... I think it looks better!). The base switch is a TrendNet 16 port gigabit which connects all of my hardwired network connections in the rooms. I also have 2 TrendNet 4 port PoE swtiches to run all of my cameras (so far) and my 2 Ubiquiti AP's. Round that out with 2 Raspberry Pi 3's which I am looking to repurpose (1 was running a home assistant type application in the background, but since I am using HA in Proxmox, it needs to be repurposed and the other was running a website that I used as more of a basic dev system/web bookmark host and trying to figure out the best way of using that in the future.) It's a start and I have other things I will be adding such as 2 audio controllers which will allow me to set up to 8 audio zones per controller and I will be putting speakers in all of the rooms, garage, utility room, back deck and who knows where else... Like you said, plans keep morphing, changing and developing!
I have a small lab at home, but the majority of my gear is in production. It runs my phone system, PC's, network, surveillance, control system, and audio visual distribution. A little advice on filming. Frame yourself centred and not too close to the camera. Also, use some baffling to prevent reflections and resonance. You can also use EQ and filtres to tune your lavalier a little better. Your lighting is pretty good. I enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing more content!
Right now, my "lab" consists of a single desktop machine running Proxmox and a switch, sitting right inside of a closet by my front door. Literally just a Dell Optiplex that I bought on eBay for $80, and several hard drives. It is just enough to host my Plex server, a couple of game servers (Killing Floor 2 and 7 Days to Die), and Nextcloud. I might try to get my hands on actual server hardware down the line to add in for additional services as I make my online experience more self-reliant. But, for now, I figured this was a good start. Loved the video by the way. Hopefully I'll make my setup as nice as yours (mine is pretty much just hacked together).

Obviously thru a VM or LXC im proxmox. To take most of the rendering load off my main pc when I game. Tried a few different thing but could not get it to work right
Great video Tim. Always had the same thoughts myself, show everyone when it's done. In my case that thought exists mainly due to having lots of non-techy family and former work colleagues.......always asking.....why? I believe that there is a place for cloud services, but that doesn't mean you need to do everything there. There's plenty you/we can all do at home without breaking the budget. My lab has changed, been pulled down moved, stored, re-installed many times in the last 10 years.
Very nice. I'm just getting started on my own homelab, and definitely jealous. I started with a fileserver, and that went pretty well, but I decided to go with a bunch of used server parts to build a virtualization server. It's not going as smoothly as I'd hoped...

My home lab is just getting started. My rack is a 25U startech 4 post open rack. So far all I have in it is my threadripper daily driver and my dual xeon media server. The next thing I want to add is a third machine just for trying stuff with. After that, who knows where this will go.
Hi, discovered your channel by chance, when I started working on the topic to build a homelab for my experiments. Interesting what you are showing. It helps to get started. Will see were my build leads me. I had the chance to get two dell R720xd on which I want to get started with proxmox and setup a docker environment which I will use as my playground related to software development around dockerrized services. Will see what I will do with the second server. Will try to follow you next stream on twitch and maybe ask some noob questions.
My homelab started three years ago. I planned a $3500 upgrade that was supposed to last me for years. I'm now $13K in with a 42U rack sitting in my living room. And it's really only just started...
I've run at least one home server for almost as long as I've been using Linux, over 15 years now, and it definitely was a huge contributor to landing my current gig a couple years ago, because I had a lot of toys to show off! I've been pretty on the ball as far as following the bleeding edge trends before they really picked up traction in enterprise for much of this time, but I'm extremely late to the Docker party. Nowadays I even run about half of my smallest workloads on a 4GB and a new 8GB RPi 4. I've only recently begun transitioning KVM-based virtual machines to containers. I had started with LXD, but that still feels too much like a full OS isolation system to me like VMs, which is exactly what I'm trying to get away from. Both for efficiency reasons, and because I need to adopt more of a cattle herding approach to server keeping, rather than treating each instance as a pet. I recently finished putting together the 5th or so iteration of my torrentbox/media server I've always had over these years, for the first time with Jellyfin and Docker, and it only took half a day of tweaking, which was by far the quickest and most painless the process of starting over has ever been for me. I was able to duplicate the entire setup by hand on another system in less than an hour after having done it once. I now have a level of integration and ease-of-use that I've been chasing for years, finally the wife can add movies and shows without my help, and all of our devices have native apps for viewing! I've run every kind of stack you can imagine over the years for this critical task, and this is the first time I've ever felt like the job is finished. Sorry for the long post, one more thing I wanted to add... funny you should mention the critical importance of that Pi 0 sending WoL packets... I have a script running on a couple servers at work whose job is to make sure my coworkers' remote desktops are on and ready when they connect to the VPN every morning after they turn off the wrong machine at the end of the previous day... 😂

I'm jealous of the setup. I'm looking to get a disk shelf as well to pass through a bunch of SATA drives for a large-ish share for my media backups. Currently i've got a Dell R510 with 12x 4tb HSGT drives in a RAID6. Unfortunately the good old Dell H700 raid card won't support 8tb drives so i'm going to go with a disk shelf, a HBA, and pass it through to a TrueNAS VM just like you're doing for your Netapp box. I've got a Dell R710 sitting on the floor over here. It was formally a Google appliance. I love it but the Perc6/i doesn't want to play well with SSD's anymore for some reason. I think it may be a backplane issue as I swapped RAID cards from a R610 I had and nothing changed. But it is what it is. Since I can't really trust it I have Proxmox hosting all of my VM's on a Dell R810. It's a far better unit for the job since it has quad octa core xeons in it for 32 threads and 64 logical processors. I just like my cool little Google box and really wanted to use it. lol. Guess it'll be relegated to 2nd line service. Probably host a Proxmox Backup or additional file shares since ive got a stack of 2tb drives leftover from my old NAS setup. Currently I don't have anything in an actual rack. I've got it sitting on NSF rated shelving. I just don't have the free space to dedicate to even a half or quarter rack. I'll have to figure something out when I finally get a disk shelf.

Put a piece of plywood as a cover on your rack, then you have space for a keyboard and monitor and KVM (if you use one) for your servers.. This is what I did to my half open frame rack..

Cool idea for the Pi Zero as a monitoring host ! The problem we have is when the power goes out, there is no automated boot-up once power comes back. With the Pi Zero running not on the UPS, I'm thinking this would resolve the issue of powering back on. Thanks for the idea !

Sell old hp? Just how old? I'd say g6 is holding in there.(just) So anything newer is going to be great for home lab. Depending on your plans. I think the word home lab and home Lan gets a bit confused. But EY. I benched my server g6 and it only scored 20 times less that my daily. So I kinda think, do you need old enterprise hardware or just newer gaming hardware? It ends up costing about the same. ;)

I sure loved this video. YOu just don't know. I've been embarrassed with my setup & situation, because it is a combination like yours. I am just reusing old gaming hardware that is OUT-OF-DATE by years, but it works. And, I am just getting into virtualization. So, yes, it would be awesome if you'd share what each PC is doing and what VMs you are running. I plan to do some VMs. I'd like to do Plex and my video collection, and I'd like to setup a VM for my ebook collection. Also, I have a File Server, but I'd like to virtualize it. And, I've got a Win7 Media Center PC going to record TV, and I'd like to virtualize -- but I ran into so many problems in the past, so I'll probably keep that as a separate PC. But, yeah, you have an AWESOME SETUP. I'm not Jelly, but I sure could be. Kudos. Subbing to your channel now.

I did a similar script on a Intel Compute stick to wake my servers after a power outage. It is plugged directly into mains power, while the servers are behind a UPS. When the power comes back on, the powershell WOL script runs and sends magic packets to my servers.

I wish I had a full depth (or fuller) rack. I don't have room at our new house for a full rack like I did at the last one. I have a network rack and found a 4u, short depth, server case.
Kudos on your HomeLab but it seems to me you went with surplus equipment rather than more modern CPUs which means more power consumption rather than less. Are you just into retro gear or what's the deal? I am spending more for my HomeLab but my gear uses less power. Again, kudos.

Would you make a video to create the scripts for the ping, WOL and restart server? I have no idea how to remote start a Dell iDRAC server from a Raspberry.

Always had the same thoughts myself, show everyone when it's done. In my case that thought exists mainly due to having lots of non-techy family and former work colleagues.......always asking.....why? I believe that there is a place for cloud services, but that doesn't mean you need to do everything there. There's plenty you/we can all do at home without breaking the budget.
My lab has changed, been pulled down moved, stored, re-installed many times in the last 10 years.

I started with a fileserver, and that went pretty well, but I decided to go with a bunch of used server parts to build a virtualization server. It's not going as smoothly as I'd hoped...

My home lab is just getting started. My rack is a 25U startech 4 post open rack. So far all I have in it is my threadripper daily driver and my dual xeon media server. The next thing I want to add is a third machine just for trying stuff with. After that, who knows where this will go.

Hi, discovered your channel by chance, when I started working on the topic to build a homelab for my experiments. Interesting what you are showing. It helps to get started. Will see were my build leads me. I had the chance to get two dell R720xd on which I want to get started with proxmox and setup a docker environment which I will use as my playground related to software development around dockerrized services. Will see what I will do with the second server. Will try to follow you next stream on twitch and maybe ask some noob questions.

My homelab started three years ago. I planned a $3500 upgrade that was supposed to last me for years. I'm now $13K in with a 42U rack sitting in my living room. And it's really only just started...

I've run at least one home server for almost as long as I've been using Linux, over 15 years now, and it definitely was a huge contributor to landing my current gig a couple years ago, because I had a lot of toys to show off! I've been pretty on the ball as far as following the bleeding edge trends before they really picked up traction in enterprise for much of this time, but I'm extremely late to the Docker party. Nowadays I even run about half of my smallest workloads on a 4GB and a new 8GB RPi 4.
I've only recently begun transitioning KVM-based virtual machines to containers. I had started with LXD, but that still feels too much like a full OS isolation system to me like VMs, which is exactly what I'm trying to get away from. Both for efficiency reasons, and because I need to adopt more of a cattle herding approach to server keeping, rather than treating each instance as a pet.
I recently finished putting together the 5th or so iteration of my torrentbox/media server I've always had over these years, for the first time with Jellyfin and Docker, and it only took half a day of tweaking, which was by far the quickest and most painless the process of starting over has ever been for me. I was able to duplicate the entire setup by hand on another system in less than an hour after having done it once. I now have a level of integration and ease-of-use that I've been chasing for years, finally the wife can add movies and shows without my help, and all of our devices have native apps for viewing! I've run every kind of stack you can imagine over the years for this critical task, and this is the first time I've ever felt like the job is finished.
Sorry for the long post, one more thing I wanted to add... funny you should mention the critical importance of that Pi 0 sending WoL packets... I have a script running on a couple servers at work whose job is to make sure my coworkers' remote desktops are on and ready when they connect to the VPN every morning after they turn off the wrong machine at the end of the previous day... 😂

I'm jealous of the setup. I'm looking to get a disk shelf as well to pass through a bunch of SATA drives for a large-ish share for my media backups. Currently i've got a Dell R510 with 12x 4tb HSGT drives in a RAID6. Unfortunately the good old Dell H700 raid card won't support 8tb drives so i'm going to go with a disk shelf, a HBA, and pass it through to a TrueNAS VM just like you're doing for your Netapp box. I've got a Dell R710 sitting on the floor over here. It was formally a Google appliance. I love it but the Perc6/i doesn't want to play well with SSD's anymore for some reason. I think it may be a backplane issue as I swapped RAID cards from a R610 I had and nothing changed. But it is what it is. Since I can't really trust it I have Proxmox hosting all of my VM's on a Dell R810. It's a far better unit for the job since it has quad octa core xeons in it for 32 threads and 64 logical processors. I just like my cool little Google box and really wanted to use it. lol. Guess it'll be relegated to 2nd line service. Probably host a Proxmox Backup or additional file shares since ive got a stack of 2tb drives leftover from my old NAS setup. Currently I don't have anything in an actual rack. I've got it sitting on NSF rated shelving. I just don't have the free space to dedicate to even a half or quarter rack. I'll have to figure something out when I finally get a disk shelf.
So many decisions! That's another thing I love about homelabs!

Put a piece of plywood as a cover on your rack, then you have space for a keyboard and monitor and KVM (if you use one) for your servers.. This is what I did to my half open frame rack..

Cool idea for the Pi Zero as a monitoring host ! The problem we have is when the power goes out, there is no automated boot-up once power comes back. With the Pi Zero running not on the UPS, I'm thinking this would resolve the issue of powering back on. Thanks for the idea !

I sure loved this video. YOu just don't know. I've been embarrassed with my setup & situation, because it is a combination like yours. I am just reusing old gaming hardware that is OUT-OF-DATE by years, but it works. And, I am just getting into virtualization. So, yes, it would be awesome if you'd share what each PC is doing and what VMs you are running. I plan to do some VMs. I'd like to do Plex and my video collection, and I'd like to setup a VM for my ebook collection. Also, I have a File Server, but I'd like to virtualize it. And, I've got a Win7 Media Center PC going to record TV, and I'd like to virtualize -- but I ran into so many problems in the past, so I'll probably keep that as a separate PC. But, yeah, you have an AWESOME SETUP. I'm not Jelly, but I sure could be. Kudos. Subbing to your channel now.

Hi Tim, hope you are doing well, could you please make a video to show installing kubernetes on proxmox and how to expose it to the network?
I did a similar script on a Intel Compute stick to wake my servers after a power outage. It is plugged directly into mains power, while the servers are behind a UPS. When the power comes back on, the powershell WOL script runs and sends magic packets to my servers.

I wish I had a full depth (or fuller) rack. I don't have room at our new house for a full rack like I did at the last one. I have a network rack and found a 4u, short depth, server case.

Kudos on your HomeLab but it seems to me you went with surplus equipment rather than more modern CPUs which means more power consumption rather than less. Are you just into retro gear or what's the deal? I am spending more for my HomeLab but my gear uses less power. Again, kudos.
