Depends heavily on the species. The animal with the longest lifespan is actually a fish, it's the greenland (or sleeper-) shark with a life expectation of more than 400 years! But for a small one kept in an aquarium, 10 years can be a long time, indeed.
Wouldn't expect a bottom dweller to jump out of a tank. Just goes to show one can never assume anything when it comes to fish.
