It doesn't take long to get started playing basic chords and improv with a topline melody. It will take some time before you sound 'cool' or have any life in your sound. This level will come when you are able to learn new chord voicing and have experiencing writing chord progressions. It may come sooner than later depending on how much time and determination you have.
