Making a low angle rabbet plane

- I make a low angle rabbet block plane. The low angle rabbeting block planes from the great brands like LN are impressive tools. Sadly very expensive, that's why I now made my own Low angle rabbet block plane out of some very hard wood scraps, a piece of sawblade, a nail and some mild steel bar. I'm really happy with the result!

Looks good,but does it cut rabbets?
Peter Gregory of course it does! ;) ..at least somewhat. I really should have added knicker-blades to cut rabbets, but I have used it to clean up rabbets, tennons, etc and it does that nicely in the corners. Thanks for watching!

This is really awesome! Great work! Only question, what is the benefit of the quilting cutting mat? I see lots of folks with them in their maker space. First it was only with Ave then everyone else seemed to start keeping them on their bench. Not giving anyone a hard time, I just want to know what the benefit is over... say a piece of cardboard?
Hi thanks for watching! I've had that cutting mat for a long time and it's still in very good shape, that's one advantage. Having the measurements is also very handy to line things up, it's flat, the knife edge will last a little bit longer and you don't cut through it by accident and into your kitching table (been there done that lol). That being said, thare is absolutely nothing wrong with some cardboard... it's what I use most often because I never have the mat handy when I need it haha

Thanks! Not sure, can be a few different kinds.. so it's always a good idea to test a small piece first! But all blade I have used so far harden easy and hold an edge pretty nicely.
Robin Coomans thanks for replying. I have a few old Makita saw blades but I never thought the steel would hold an edge!
No problem. Not all sawblades are suitable steel, so test a small piece to be sure! Heat it up to non-magnetic and quench in oil, try again with water if the oil doesn't harden the piece. If it does harden you can definitly use the sawblades for tools, knives, etc.
Ps: It might not be as good as real tool/knife steel but it's not bad for sure!

Is the wood Tanguile core?
Mikhail, I honestly couldn't tell you. All I know is that it is very hard tropical wood, but it's not mahogany like (the wood you mentioned is similar to mahogany I believe?) So I'm guessing it is something else. Thanks for watching!
