Slaves in the American South were actually quite well fed due to the owners wanting to maximize labor output which meant feeding them high protein diet so they grew big and strong. I hate to make this comparison but they were essentially treated like livestock, the more they ate the more they produced. In fact, a ton of modern American BBQ come directly from the recipes used by the slaves. They were the ones doing most of the cooking after all.

Slaves in the American South were actually quite well fed due to the owners wanting to maximize labor output which meant feeding them high protein diet so they grew big and strong. I hate to make this comparison but they were essentially treated like livestock, the more they ate the more they produced. In fact, a ton of modern American BBQ come directly from the recipes used by the slaves. They were the ones doing most of the cooking after all.
