I think Hunter Thompsons' quote about Zeta Accosta fits Tom Waits just about right. "A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die"
I used the same quote recently on social media - it fits Tom just as much as Accosta. One of a kind individuals - truly on their own path, expectations be damned.
Tom has been my absolute favourite for 30 odd years, so many amazing albums and songs, so many styles and the songwriting is up there with the best sad, beautiful, but also funny, heartwarming and profoundly human. I mean even the genius Leonard Cohen wrote a poem about being jealous of his songwriting and Bob Dylan calls him his songwriting hero should give you a appreciation of how bloody amazing he is. Some other acts you should check out at a similar level Nick Cave and the bad seeds, tindersticks, Scott Walker, the divine comedy, the fall, Swans and nd for sheer musical madness Cardiacs may not all be your tastes but have all given me so much for so long.
This is such a powerful song. It hit right to the core of me. You couldn't help but be moved by the emotion and the empathy Tom Waits puts into this. I get the impression he is really feeling everything he is singing about.
"I love how music can make me feel" Oh dear, well. Your in for a ride then. When I first heard this song, it was from my dad playing it. I didn't listen too hard to the lyrics, but thought it was 'cool'. Later listening in when I was older let me hear what he was trying to say.
Marc is absolutely awesome. I got to know him because of Raindogs and just love his sound and style. Recently he played guitar on a whole album by Latin Grammy winner Natalia Lafourcade and there's a great lyric video of the full album on YT with imagery and footage of the recordings sessions. You get to watch Marc playing quite a few times in that video. One of my favorite songs from that album is "Muerte" which has a lot of great Marc Ribot on it... Enjoy the gig in Cleveland, I'm sure it'll be amazing! Peace and love from Bavaria!
What a great story teller.. Reminds me of some of the greats from the sixties and seventies. Musically I don't believe i've heard anything quite like this before it is unique. I suppose with the subject at hand it kind of had to have the driving cadence. I didn't catch a lot of the lyrics but I think I got the gist from what he was saying. ❤ and ✌️ all
The surreal promotional video for Tom Waits' 2012 single "Hell Broke Luce." by Matt Mahurin. Look him Up. Amazing Artist and he and Tom were put on this earth for each other.
Yeah dude wow. For me it was the cadence that his voice held in that direct short manner of thought. Underneath it I heard his longing to get to the end of the battle happening or imminent. It's the voice in your head that drifts when you have time for your personal thoughts. Like a bad day at any high stress job that you are good at
Tom has a number of songs which are intense, discouraged reflections on things that are wrong in the world. In my opinion, this is the most brutal one, and it's a complete masterpiece. What's amazing about Tom is that he's able to make you feel that you're completely immersed in his stories, watching everything unfold. Because you're in it, you can really feel its impact.
One of Tom's most powerful songs, matched perfectly by director Matt Mahurin's harrowing video. The lines that get to me are "How is it that the only ones responsible for making this mess got their sorry asses stapled to a goddamn desk?" and the ending "Now I'm home and I'm blind and I'm broke! What's next?" Waits is a true one -off, his most brutal songs are not for everyone, but he measures it with many beautiful melodic songs. He is a true raconteur, as well as a songwriter, and his live song introductions illustrate what a fantastic showman he is. His interviews can be interesting too, he can be extremely witty, droll, humorous, strange, challenging, thought provoking, intelligent, but sometimes a tad belligerent and difficult too, but always extremely entertaining.
The feeling in this song is kind of reminding me of some of System of a Downs anti-war lyrics. Like B.Y.O.B. Obviously very different genres, presentation and POV of the singer but I got the same feeling from it.
Not a big fan of this. His singing style is just not for me,I respect his storytelling abilities, but the overall sound is just not something I would ever listen to.
Luce was a vet who came home and couldn’t get passed what happened to him over seas and took his own life
came here to say this - Luce - was an actual human

About the same. First encountered him on "Tommy the Cat" by Primus.

YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD! This sounded so personal and just raw!
Have you reacted to Screaming Jay Hawkins yet?

I was speechless after I first heard this song too

Tom is the apex of the human pyramid.
He is as high as You can get above the rest.
Been there. 21 years active duty Army. War is hell! Thanks for playing this song.

Tom is the real deal, great musician!
