I'm so glad that you talk about the mental side of having acne. The first impression you have on people is important, and I don't care if people say that's shallow (well, it is), but whether you like it or not, it matters. The first thing they notice about you, even before you speak, may be your beautiful smile or your captivating eyes, or whatever, but when you have acne, it takes it all away. I believe that most people know that acne is not the result of bad hygiene in most cases, and won't offer their all-so-enlightening advice on washing your face both morning and evening, wearing spf, etc. But still, I don't want people to notice acne when they first look at me. My skin was bad 2 years ago, now it's better, but not entirely clear, and I when get a pimple here and there around the time of my period or when the seasons are changing, an irrational part of me freaks out. I know it'll go away in up to 3 days, and it's really not that bad, but I still feel that way. Don't judge yourself, your fears are valid.
This is the most relatable comment I’ve read. It’s rough, whether you want it or not, its the first impression and even if you try not to care it matters. It’s showing up right there, always. When you look in the mirror, when you open your phone camera. Acne is normal and we all go though it, severe acne is something else

Thanks for sharing your acne experience. I can relate to everything you mentioned as I went through something similar with severe acne when I was 18 years old through 19 years old. My severe acne breaks out happened a month after graduating High School and right before starting University classes at California State University Los Angeles. Like you mentioned it was perhaps one of the hardest times of my life because you feel like you have no control over your skin. I tried a variety of products on my skin but nothing was working effectively. Back then I disliked mirrors so much because I didn’t want to see the breakouts on my face.
To me the breakouts that frustrated me the most were not the pimples on the cheeks or forehead but rather the ones on the nose. I remember at times when the pimples were so visible I literally had to put a bandaid over my nose to cover them up. I didn’t start seeing results until I finally went to a Dermatologist in Los Angeles and he had me take Accutane for months. I did experience some side effects with the dried lips amongst others things but yeah it felt like I was another person like a less version of myself. But that all changed when I finally started seeing the results because little by little my skin improved. I wish I had gone to Dermatologist a lot sooner but I’m thankful that I had this experience after graduating high school because had I gone through this in my final year of high school when i had to take pictures for senior portraits for yearbook, senior class photos, and graduation photos with all acne it would have been much worse.
Thankfully, now I don’t have those severe acne breakouts thanks to the Dermalogica products that I use, but yes every now and then when I get a pimple even a small one, I have a similar reaction like you did because you remember the past and what you went through during those tough times with severe acne. Therefore, Candela remember you are not alone as there many of us both men and women around the world that go through similar experiences. Lastly, thank you for the sunscreen recommendation I never thought about putting it on cloudy and rainy days as I would only put it on just sunny days. Thank you and have a lovely weekend in Miami. Today it’s my brother’s birthday today so we are gathering in Los Angeles tonight and over the weekend to celebrate.
