  • This is The Debrief.
    One soccer game, each week.
    Debriefed by USWNT legend and 2x World Cup Champion Tobin Heath
    This week Tobin breaks down the NWSL's Cascadia Rivalry: Portland Thorns vs. Seattle Reign FC
    -
    “The Debrief is a concept that comes from the U.S. Women’s National Team.
    A sports psychologist came in before the 2019 World Cup to figure out the marginal gains - what could we do that no other team was going to be doing to win that World Cup?
    We’d go on the field for 90-plus minutes. And no matter what happened - win, lose, or tie - we’d come back to the locker room, sit down, and debrief.
    What did that look like? Everybody just getting out all of their energy on the past game. Their feelings. Their emotions. Holding each other accountable. Whether it was the good, bad, or ugly it was a time to expel all of our feeling about the game. And then we’d wipe our hands and say ‘onto the next game.’
    Doing it collectively as a team was a game changer. It completely unlocked our ability to move through tournaments in a positive way.
    So we took this concept and put it into this show. I’m going to watch one game every week, and then I’m going to just expel all of my feelings about the game and together we’ll Debrief.”
    - Tobin

    Definitely agree about the PK! The current state of VAR frustrates me no end, and confirms that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. They've traded questions about on-field calls for questions about VAR intervention with little gained in the process. All the while disrupting the flow of the game.

    Sorry, Tobin, but gotta disagree: best non-Soph Thorn was (as is often the case) Hina Sugita. Not having her in the starting eleven for the first handful of games was a huge error. The transformation once she was starting has been dramatic.

      honestly, I think the best Thorn on the field right now, and the one even giving Sophia Smith a run for her money is Muller on the back line. I mean, we obvs need Hina in the game, she's such a huge presence. But I think Muller should already be discussed as a potential Defensive Play of the Year, if she keeps playing like she does.

    Obviously I'm not the soccer mind Tobin is, but I noticed something that I'm surprised she didn't mention. Seattle's service into the box and on set pieces was poor-to-terrible the majority of the game. Again and again, crosses and dead balls were overcooked or misplaced. Set pieces are still a weakness for this Thorns squad. Seattle squandered so many scoring chances.

    As a Portland fan.............. man, I hated the Refs in this game. I thought overall, especially before that PK, Seattle was getting away with everything under the sun. And fans in the Stadium were pissed at how long the VAR was taking as well.
    Regarding the PK call, I think the Ref got it right in the strictest reading of the word (the defenders arm looked like it was chicken winging a little to me. Obviously, as a pro, you'd have a better understanding).
    But just overall in the game, the reffing felt...... bad.
    Then again, Providence Park always seems to invite terrible Refs.

    Made 2 good points that Portland had a weak first half and that the call was wrong, even Becky Sauerbraun acknowledged as much. That said, stop saying that this all happened because Seattle had three games in one week. Portland had 3 games the week before and won all of them so that is a sorry excuse for Seattle to lose.
    The league has done a poor job of scheduling which is contributing to overloads which may be tied to increased player injuries.

    @bhuld0115 Месяц назад +2

    Thorns season tkt holder. PK wasn’t until the 80th minute. Reign had 35 minutes to even it up. Didn’t. Reign was strong in the first half and didn’t score. Thorns defense was solid throughout and the Reign was never dangerous. VAR can go away, imho. Just let the terrible NWSL refs be part of the game. I’d rather have a goal line camera to decide iffy goals. VAR serves gambling more than the game (you can bet on the outcome online). Without VAR the game would have continued with no call. He didn’t call for it until his headset buzzed in his ear.

  • @noodle_fc
    @noodle_fc Месяц назад +2

    Huerta has to take blame for that PK. No matter how contact happens, the rules are explicit: if your arm is away from your body and it doesn't have to be, you're risking a penalty. Look at Lou Barnes and Shae Holmes just before Moultrie scores: their hands are clasped behind their backs. Huerta could have done the same. She didn't. It's silly to make that conscious choice and then blame the ref when there are consequences.

    • @bubbleblow7461
      @bubbleblow7461 Месяц назад

      Dude, that isn't the rule. It needs to be an unnatural movement, this clearly wasn't. We use out arms to balance when we walk or move in any way, you want defenders to play practically without arms ever? That is literally impossible because your balance will be off

    • @noodle_fc
      @noodle_fc Месяц назад +1

      @@bubbleblow7461 "Unnatural movement" is not the standard. You really ought to be sure what the rule is before you directly contradict someone about it. Here is the rule:
      _"It is an offence if a player: touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised"_
      I mentioned Lou Barnes and Shae Holmes for a reason. They don't find it impossible to play with their hands clasped behind them. "This is how my arm moves when I don't think about it" does not satisfy "consequence of or justifiable by." Serious question, because I'm curious. Why do you think they'd put that language about "takes a risk of" in the rule? If that doesn't mean what Huerta did, then what do you think it would mean?

    • @bubbleblow7461
      @bubbleblow7461 Месяц назад

      @@noodle_fc Seriously are you just fucking braindead? You clearly have never played football if you think defenders can just play with their hands behind their backs the whole damn time and still keep standing. The rule is NEVER used that way by competent ref, like literally never. So maybe you should watch some football first before commenting on it. If a player falls over and catches their fall with their hands it's not considered a handball. You why? Because it's a fucking natural movement but i guess according to you they should just land on their face with their hands behind their back.

    • @bingsu079
      @bingsu079 Месяц назад +1

      Replying to your 2nd comment, I think Seattle definitely dropped off and fell apart but they very well may have been giving their all. They are coming off of a three game week (one where they had to play one down for 80 min and another against the no. 1 team in the league), facing a Portland that had a week to rest & the likes of Smith, Moultrie, Sugita, etc. Seattle does not have nearly as much depth as Portland/many other teams in the league, and with the momentum shift after the PK, their exhaustion probably got the better of them. Maybe they could’ve done more but I don’t think it’s as simple as you’re making it seem.

    • @bubbleblow7461
      @bubbleblow7461 Месяц назад +2

      @@TomF18 Dude, just stop talking if you don't know how football works. You can say never give up all you want but a 2-0 in the 80th minute is a death sentence in basically every game and the fact it was a PK that shouldn't have been given makes it even worse.

    • @TomF18
      @TomF18 Месяц назад

      @@bubbleblow7461 “Dude, just stop talking” if you haven’t watched enough soccer to see a 2 goal lead leveled within 15, 10 or even 5 minutes. It happens often.
      And the point is still that, Heath acted like it would’ve made all the difference in the world if the PK weren’t given. Despite already handing a “death sentence” to Seattle, Portland didn’t stop trying. And they doubled their lead in stoppage time alone.
