Well he's been singing lyrics like that for a lot longer, I guess many must have talked to him and tried to help him, but he says it himself in a lot of the lyrics: "You think I'm on drugs 'cause I want to but I have no choice." He was addicted, and yes, from our point of view it's alarming because we know what happened, but it was just his routine for years and he didn't stop, I guess the money allowed him to always have some in reserve, which doesn't help when you're addicted to the point of consuming a lot of it every day.. Anyways. To anyone going through hard times, addictions etc, please be careful, take care of your mental health, your own life, seek help if you feel like you need it.
