Is Onkyo Out of Business?

  • Last summer it was announced that Klipsch was to taking over distribution of Onkyo products. Just a couple of months ago a fire burned down the AKM factory in Japan that produces most of the DACs for the industry and widely used in Onkyo receivers. Customer support has been absent from Onkyo over the last couple of months and NONE of their receivers are in stock on their website. This makes us wonder if Onkyo's days are numbered. What do you think?

Back in 94 i went to SUN TV to purchase a new receiver, because my old one had died. I was hell bent on buying a Technics receiver, but the clerk told me that the Onkyo was better so i ended up caving & went with Onkyo. I'm glad i took his advice. After 26 years my Onkyo still works & sounds good.

I needed to get my Onkyo receiver repaired, but over the course of a year, the service center couldn't get the parts I needed. In Europe, these parts are also missing from stock.
They stopped production on hopes with Sound United buying them out but due to Covid-19 and from too much profit loss they couldn't reopen their Factory. I believe Onkyo also handles Pioneer and Integra.
I know a few Distributors haven't had Onkyo on their shelves for at least a year. The last Onkyo Receiver I had in stock went out last month and we ended up switching to Denon. Since a lot of AV Integrators are facing the same issue they also switched to Yamaha and Denon.
It seems that production has completely stopped and support for existing products is no longer carried out.
    Onkyo is pretty much done.

Just bought the Yamaha RX-6VA to replace my Onkyo 609 receiver. Finally going to move up to Atmos. Stock is low in every receiver brand because people are stuck inside. I’ve had an Integra receiver and presently have an Integra prepro. The receiver an old DTR 6.3 I used as a prepro because the amp section was weak. Rated 100X6 but the Harmon Kardon PA-5800 rated 80X5 I had seemed much stronger. The preamp section was excellent. My Integra DHC 40.2 prepro I have no complaints about. Sounds excellent. Also have an Onkyo 6 disc CD changer for about 15 years still going strong. Built like a tank. I’m certainly hoping Onkyo pulls through and survives.
One thing I’d like to see come back is Harmon Kardon. Up until they basically dropped out of making a lot of receivers they had probably the best amp sections and their power amps they made were excellent. I know they’re still in business but they don’t make anything really worthwhile anymore.

I bought an Onkyo receiver from Best Buy for my daughter a couple of years ago. Our home was a recipient of a power surge. This toasted both the Onkyo and Sony receivers. Only the Yamaha sound bar in another bedroom survived. The Onkyo amplifiers definitely put out decent power with plenty of headroom. The menu setup was easy to use, and their room equalization worked well in a large room. I hope they're still going to be in business.

back around 1996 i picked up a new integra integrated amplifier with a built in power cord.it sounded pretty good i thought at the time.then on or around 2003 the source selector knob started going haywire.i t alked to a local onkyo dealer who told me they would take a look at it but their diagnostic fee would be 100.00.then,depending what i decided to do with the amp, they would send it on to the onkyo service center which i would have to pay for shipping plus what the service center would charge for repair and return shipping.i passed on that option and instead ordered an nad 80 wpc integrated amp from north country audio that had a separate and more sturdy power cord.the sound of the nad was a 100% improvement over the integra and i never had any problems with it.the nad is of better build quality, too.

While Klipsch has taken over distribution of Onkyo in the U.S., Onkyo will distribute Klipsch products in Japan and perhaps other parts of Asia. Upgraded to an NR818 a few years ago after a couple of Denon AVRs, and found it quite an upgrade both sonically and in terms of the UI, but have had a few issues recently with dropouts that I was inclined to blame on my cable provider. Would hate to hear that HDMI reliability is a problem, and as we are all finding out “service/repair” is quickly becoming a fond memory from the 20th century. I’m close to approaching my 70th birthday and have been in this “hobby/addiction” for over 50yrs, and while my current financial situation would allow me to begrudging replace this piece should it fail completely, the language I’m inclined to use to describe my feelings about that would definitely be NSFW, but would rhyme with Nantucket.
So, I guess thanks Gene for the heads up?

And I'm driving: 6 -mid 90s- Polk Audio RT55 bookshelves , a Polk Audio CS400 center and four Polk Audio M5 heights (yes I had to epoxy the spiders) along with four JBL POWERBASS10 subs. 7.4.4 fills the room with sound. (With one auxiliary 2 channel power amplifier to run the rear surrounds)
Sure I have a long way to go to perhaps upgrade the speakers however the Sony ES shines while watching, listening or gaming. That's a fact.

My HDMI board never had a problem and I bought another one and the HDMI board still works on that. JUST LET IT BREATHE. Don’t Jann in a small space.

FYI, I got a lot of emails from Onkyo / Pioneer (US and Canada) in 2019 and early 2020 offering products for sale, some new some refurbished. There never seemed much in terms of products on their officail websites in Canada and the US.
I visited the Onkyo Asia and Oceania site and they have all the products listed, low, mid and high end. Eastwood HiFi, a retailer in Australia from whom I purchased gear when living there, still stocks and sells most of the Onkyo range.
Checked the UK and EU site and they also look fine.
I could be wrong but it seems like the Onkyo / Pioneer issue seems to be isolated to their North American distribution.
Keep up the good work. Cheers.
