I have been going through a difficult personal time and I have found inspiration and strength by watching Draco's story again, which in some way represents us all. Excellent contribution from Mike that transcends aviation to penetrate the values that underpin our respective stories and I hope one day someone will turn this into a good book and a good movie.
Mike, Your message after showing the new Wilga brought me to tears. I cannot stress enough how important that message of family and loved ones is. I lost my sister this Christmas, and with losing her I've encountered many regrets and a lot of grief that I don't know quite how to handle. Don't ever take life for granted. Say what you need to say to those around you. Don't leave any words unspoken. Thanks so much for your amazing energy and your inspirational dedication and drive. It really does help others more than I think you'll ever know. Keep being awesome. Now get back to work.
So I’m currently going to A&P school and every time I watch your videos I recognize something I’ve learned about, for example I’ve worked with composite and micro balloons and it’s cool to see them being used. I also have a love for off road and swing king shocks being used on your long travel tail wheel is so cool! @@kevinz8867 he has a little advantage with scrappy as she's not going to fly long distance all the time (from my understanding) but I am in the process of designing my experimental and we plan to fly upwards of 1600 mile trips so I am going with the most simple and safe way with redundancy lol
I was thinking the same thing. My crappy home built race car had a thermostat on the additional oil cooler. I wonder if a thermostat reduces flow significantly, therefore not suitable for his high HP application?
Most aircraft already have one, called a vernatherm. But they still seem to let oil flow to the cooler a little in my experience. Putting a door on the oil cooler is best, and it may allow the cooler to get warm enough so oil doesn’t congeal in the cooler on cold days. Maybe he could put an automatic function on the servo motor, then it can adjust itself without him trying to chase it!

I remember back in the day, I had a '78 Cutlass with a Goodwrench crate 350. I installed a cheap crappy chrome thermostat housing, which unbeknownst to me, had eroded away to nothing through electrolysis. This caused my coolant temp to never exceed 140° - the result was no heat in winter, and, milky oil from excessive condensation. I'll never forget the shock of seeing how degraded that housing was! Looked like it was in the ocean for 20 years. It was only a month or so old!! What a difference with a new housing and thermostat! Actually had heat again, and all the engine moisture was gone. Thank you for making something that is incredibly complex seems so simple. I believe that it gives people hope that they can do anything. I’ve tried to do things like that, but I was barely successful on a small scale. Hot rods, racing cars, etc. I’m trying to do everything I can to get a plane, and I sure appreciate your inspiration.

For the oil cooling, you could even automate the process with PID control. You could have it where you set a temperature you want to be at and it could actuate the flaps to different degrees automatically. You could have a switch to turn it on so that it doesn't close the flaps when cold starting too
John Rutkowski I was thinking along the same lines but, either way really, you’d have to come up with some sort of redundancy. I’d hate to see the oil cook and take out a very expensive engine...
It's not just what you do but the unbelievable amount of energy you have doing it all. Working at full-tilt 12-16hr days/7 days per week. If every guy were like you on the planet we'd be 1,000 years ahead in a matter of weeks.

Beat wishes for your success. 😃
amazing so glad this man and wife survived Draco incredible knowledge of aircraft and building
inspiring to watch ever video you make
Good to see you doing what you love, Mike. Part of the healing process. You are an inspiration to all of us.
Mike, glad to see you’re, ‘Back to work’! Thought we were going to have to file a missing persons report! 👍👍
I've been waiting like a crack addict for some more videos this made my day ....
Big congratulations on the new Wilga project. I know you won't disappoint us and an looking forward to seeing the finished product. Also always enjoy the ongoing projects.
love how you anticipate issues and find soultions ! it inspires me I build custom motorcycles and you make me better thanks
Mike, you and your brother are the picture of the American dream. Ultra Overachievers. Successful parent, good marriage, engineer, fabricator, skilled aviator, welder, machinist, carbonfiberist, inspirationist, Amazing! Keep it up and God bless You.
Thanks for continuing to make these -- I appreciate the heck out of them.
You mentioned a full time job, what do you dog or a living if you don’t mind being asked? Can’t wait to see scrappy done!!! She gonna be siiiiiick!!
I'd love to intern with Mike for a summer...
The wealth of knowledge a guy could learn would be priceless in and of itself
@glockumollie Ah yep...see this video: ruclips.net/video/NfctWAoDXvs/видео.html

Please watch those crosswinds Mike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
glockumollie Yes!
Watch the video?
I like watching you build unbelievable planes and the crazy abilities you have to come up with the unconventional ideas and put them into effect on the air frame and can't wait to see Scrappy and Draco X . I love planes ever since I was kid just never knew anyone to get me started.
Cant Love these videos enough Mike.. Thank you for being a inspiration.
Mike,I did composite for 30 years for Boeing, your doing a fantastic job on your projects, aluminum foil is a great release for the work you are doing, lay up over it and it pop right off.
My 17 year Grandaughter is a pilot and saw Draco at OshKosh but didn’t get to see you, keep it up👍👍👍🛵
I enjoy your enthusiasm! Makes me smile!👍
Loved your oil cooling explanation at the end! Great video!
Absoluteley one of the best things on RUclips.
I’ve shaped and sanded surfboards since I was 13 years old without a mask! I understand. Stupid? Yes. I now try to wear a n95 or n100 mask when sanding, but old habits are hard to change. I feel fine! Really. Love your work. Thanks for inspiring me to fly again. You rock
This guy is awesome ,money seems to be no sweat he does what a lot of us just dream about ,rock on guy .
Mike can explain everything's, from the simplest to the most complicated in an incredible easy and clear way. You're better than my former engineering professors. I respect you in a way you can't even imagine; you are a man to be inspired by. Enthusiastic and passionate about his work. Thank you for sharing this with us!
I thought you had the first and last one built, what number is this one? I just knew you wouldn't put DRACO down for good and I can't wait to see what you do this time !!!
You are a truly amazing person Mike! So inspirational and positive! Your spirit is bright and mind beautiful! What a guy! Thanks for the great content!
Oh my god. I can say I’ve touched KT !!!! the new draco X. I was told it had a new owner had no idea it was you !!
you are now a better man for having touched one of this gods possessions. go forth and be better than most now great one.
So happy for you Mike! You are an inspiration for everyone in the community!
If there is a guy on this planet who is living the dream, it's Mike Patey..
yes he is
I'm learning a lot....you have 4 dimension perspective to any build...great stuff.
Few weeks ago heard a wilga was registered under you. You ain’t catching ME by surprise 😉
Just a brilliant engineering motivational video. Should be compulsory viewing for all aerospace students.
