I would think that for us, the ones that have been watching your videos, since before you were on patreon, or even when you were helping everyone, just for the sake of helping, i would say that we are very proud of every one of your accomplishments, it makes me happy to see all your progress and specially, keeping the same humility throughout the years.
Hi I work for Rudee Tours in Virginia, we have 5 headboats that require year round maintenance. I've learned a lot from your videos over the past few years, the Alexseal no tip additive is a game changer for us, we used to roll and tip everything, now we just roll. We have always used Awlgrip because of its durability but have recently started experimenting with Alexseal paints and products. We have a lot of Awlgrip on hand and since Alexseal and Awlgrip are both 2 part polyurethane paints we decided to try Alexseal's no tip additive in Awlgrip to see if it would work. We add the recommended amount to our Awlgrip and it works exactly as intended with no ill effects. We also use the spray catalyst when rolling, instead of brushing, and end up with much less orange peel and a smoother finish. I've used spray catalyst rolling alexseal too and it works very well, especially since alexseal base is much thicker than awlgrip's base you get less orange peel. We also reduce with spraying reducer sometimes up to 50 percent depending on conditions (we paint outside). Sometimes it needs an extra coat to hide but the finish is much smoother with far less sanding before the last coat and you achieve spray like finish using a roller. I know we are outside of the recommended usage for both products but it does work, our paint takes a beating but holds up well and looks great. I have some pictures of our recent projects if you'd like to see. We can afford to experiment with these expensive paints more than the average DIY'er because we use so much, so I figured I would share our results and maybe help someone else out. Thanks again for the great videos
DIY testimonial.... I painted (rolled) a 39'x14' catamaran with 3 coats of Alexseal and it came out phenomenal. My options were 1.) Professional spray job for $20k 2.) Wrap for $6500 or 3.) Alexseal for $1,500 (materials + my time + haul out). I couldnt be happier with the result. In fact, once you get your rhythm and learn your lessons, it is easier than buffing and waxing. If I ever get to that point, I will sand with 400 and roll on 1 or 2 more coats....
Thanks, Andy. I own a commercial passenger boat in North Carolina and had you on my list to contact for some clarification. I may be placing an order with you next off-season to get this boat painted. I'm always very appreciative of your content. It's a huge help!
I spent 7 years as Yooper, and ended up moving back to SE Wisconsin, it was just too much for me, and I didn't even really live in the snow belt, but winter was sooooo long. I remember going out camping in late August and it hitting 34 degrees at night.. just no. Summer is too short. It is beautiful up there though, and some great sailing, but I am now a visitor :)
I have used Awlgrip Awlcraft 2000, There is definitely a learning curve especially when you dont have the best of equipment, lack of confidence and cash. I cant wait to try Alexseal 501 with the roller additive for the boat I am building. Seems like a much better option for me. love your videos, great information and I appreciate what you do. Thank You!
Imron ms600 is a great 2 part marine top coat as well also is repairable only by spray application though. Thank you Andy for all of your excellent information as always!

I so miss the U.P. Andy. I do. I lived in Houghton/Hancock for 3 years. Saw 350" Snow Falls, and miss it. Granted, I did NOT need to clear that snow (well, I did help friends). I think the worst part was shoveling roofs...yea, we did that. Yes, Spring/Summer/Fall (we liked to call that July 19th) was a play hard day for sure. Just remember...9 months of winter and 3 months of bad sledding. LOL..
No idea how much we've gotten so far this Winter but it's a lot lol!! At least half dozen storms that dumped 2-3 feet each time along with the constant 1-2 inches every day. Crazy :-)!!
@@boatworkstoday I remember it well. When I was at MTU we had a local folk singer (transplant from Dearborn, MI). He used to sing at the Library Bar (before it burned and became a brewery). Well, he was just a great guy and he added his own spin on a song and added int he lyrics "We get a foot a snow most every day, but we'll say YA TO DA U.P. EH!". I know the snow gets to a point of "WHEN WILL IT END", but it does. Just remember, next up is BLACK FLY SEASON. Then No See Ums, and of course the flying beast of the Mosquito (big enough to carry small children away). Oh yea...one of the reasons I preferred winter up there...LOL.
About time you get back on Andy lol, we miss ya. Also, the guy that made Awlgrip is the same guy that came up with Alexseal. He made his own company, and that's how we got Alexseal. That's what we spray exclusively at our yard, it's a super product.
@@boatworkstoday those who know, know lol. It gives credence to the brand for sure. And I'm really glad your showing your viewers how you acquire and use a very high quality product, not just topside paint from lowes lol
Wondering if you are still making Videos for us Now at all Andy.. You are Great at it in every respect.. I still haven't seen the end of the Bertram with finished paint on the back (top) .. Let Us See the final finishing process on this Story if Possible.. Thanks, Richard
Thanks (again) for the great info. I'm so glad to see that you are distributing the Alexseal products. After watching your Alexseal demos back in the day, I tried to buy some to practice with from a couple of other regional "distributors" -- but that (how can I say it politely) didn't go so well. Looking forward to becoming a Patreon / Customer of your brick and mortar operation. - Brian in Detroit.
Hi Andy, I've got one question, I'm restoring a hydrogen boat. The bottom was damaged when he hits something. So I have to repair that. But I was wondering if I had to use gelcoat or Alex seal ❤ What would you do Low volume videos get well soon
if it's below the waterline you'll want to finish with either gelcoat or a barrier coat followed up with a bottom paint. If you go with gelcoat then use poly or vinyl based materials start to finish for the glasswork and fairing. If finishing with barrier and bottom then you can use epoxy for the repair
I love what this channel does and I’m a big fan as well as a humble student. I have a question, what do I do if I need to paint some this weekend and then the rest next weekend? Is starting and stopping realistic? Thank you in advance.
Hay Andy, love the channel and binge watch all episodes during Covid lockdown. Can I use west 207 hardener to cure epoxy using fillers to fillet a joint. I have 3/4 of a tin left over from varnishing and don’t want it to go to waste. Thanks Ian
I have an older sailboat with Imron paint over gelcoat. It has some scuffs through to the grey gelcoat and I would like to repair them. Would Alexseal be good for this? Can it be color matched? I would be glad to become a patron if you think this would be a possible solution. Thanks
Two questions: what is the name of your website...and two, will extremely fine metallic flake work in alexseal 501 and will it look natural when rolled and tipped?
I've thought about it over the years, just not sure how it would actually work. I suspect I'd be getting a lot of project specific questions, and without seeing pics of what's going on it's nearly impossible to offer any advice :-/
What town is your brick and mortar store in? I will be looking for paint later on this summer. I'm in the Marquette area but am in the West end quite often.
Hi Andy, sorry this comment is off topic, but I was having a problem leaving an email on your website. I have a quick project question for you. I have a Grand Banks with that classic teak transom. I have taken it down to bare wood and starting from scratch using TotalBoat TotalStrip and it worked really well. I am very intrigued with your videos regarding using epoxy before varnishing. Then I'm considering Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish with high UV filter. My concern is with the tint that this combination will give me, and that it might be too dark. I was looking for that classic amber color that you see on most Grand Banks transoms that I know the Epifanes varnish will give me. Do you have any thoughts? Many thanks, Jim Andersen BTW, I did leave a donation and really appreciate the great work that you do. I am a big fan of your videos. Thanks again
You forgot to mention that Awl Grip is for professional use only! And is the leading brand in the market!! World wide, and yes, its is part of AkzoNobel, more than a 100 years in the yacht industry.
Alexseal is like Porridge and looks like a golf ball. Awlgrip works in the applicatiors favour. Alexseal is a no go in my opinion. 10 years high end yacht painting experience

It would be great to help out on a project where you could video the issues and solutions. An entirely new facet to your show.
You sold me on Alexseal the moment you demonstrated it! I am not sure it is easily available i Australia...
