Totally agree. One of the most harmonious guitar solos. And it fits so well with the song as a whole. So many guitar solos seem to be unrelated to the song itself. Not this one.
It's as simple as that: puff is part of the trade. Al, on the other hand, has always been a humble and rather unconspicuous man while being a fantastic songwriter and singer. Modesty is a virtue but it won't get you far - at least not as far as others who blow their own trumpet loud.
The searing guitar and wailing organ is fantastic. The guitar solo is definitely the highlight here though the orginal on the record was even better. Fantastic song and album.
it's odd, years ago ( february 22nd 1973) I saw him at fairfield halls croydon. I knew him quite well, and I was sitting in row 2, and he said, I can only see to the 2nd row, and theres my friend, which was nice. then 3 years later this song appears mentioning half familiar faces in the 2nd row.....
@@soko63 Wow.... I wanted to meet Al Stewart all my life..... I think if I ever did, I would be dumb founded.... I met Peter White a couple of times...and he reponds to my e mails... But Al Stewart I would love to say I met him....
@@gbaviere I met him when he and Dave Nachmanoff played the Don Gibson Theatre in little ole Shelby, NC. It's a small place and after the show Al sat at a merchandise table and autographed and chatted with everyone.
I wondered if he could ever play this song live if the lyrics are taken literally, wouldn't be very polite - especially in your case! I can only hope the lines are a metaphor for a broader life perspective. I don't think AL Stewart is rude at all but I think he did get a burn out earlier on so maybe this song can be taken literally
I agree. Never heard this song before in my life till now, this is a great solo with a great tone. I used to own a guitar just like that one, probably 2 years older.
@@stuartpopp472 The original guitarist that played on the album year of the cat were this song is from was Tim Renwick and he went on to play on the division tour with Pink Floyd.
@@stuartpopp472Ok, just listen the original studio version (from "Year of the cat akbum"). The guitar solo by Tim Renwick is a little bit shorter but even more clean!!
Adam Yurman on lead guitar... Adam replaced Mark Goldenberg about this time period... Al has been lucky to surround himself with some amazing guitarists... Jimmy Page, Tim Renwick, Mark Goldenberg, Adam Yurman, Peter White, Laurence Juber, and currently Dave Nachmanoff...
But as far as I know, in "One stage before" the amazing guitar solo (both in studio and in this live version) is/was played by Tim Renwick, at least in the original studio version... I simply love this solo, and the song as a whole, from the best school of progressive rock (including the keyboards notes)!! And the lyrics are great also, a nice reference of playing a song in previous concerts mixed with a fictional deja vu experience in a past life... strange and magic at the same time!
I'm not ptetty sure who's the lead guitarist in this concert, but in the "Year of the cat" album where the original studio version of this sing comes from, the closing great guitar solo is by Tim Renwick.
Among the non single songs of Al Stewart, this is my favorite and is among my favorites in all. Al is so criminally underrated. He is one of the greatest. Top of the heap
Totally agree, I've been a fan since Time Passages was released, then I had to find every Al Stewart album since before and after that.
@@Northman1963Ditto to that. I am an addict of his music. 😊
AGREE WITH YOU
And this is my favorite song of his.
Er hatte damals die besten Gitarristen im Studio: Tim Renwick und Peter White❤❤❤
One of my favorite guitar solos of all time. Great song too.
Yes!! Great feeling, great technique, and great melody... very original!!

Masterpiece.❤
Al's music is so unique that it gets stuck in your head even after almost half a century. What a great musician!
The song gives me immense pleasure.
Al's music should include an Earworm Advisory sticker. 😊
So absolutely love this song! My all time favorite guitar solo!
Tim Renwick
Always understated brilliance ..
Love him
❤
Absolutely amazing song with an amazing guitar solo!
How did Rod Stewart get so famous and Al, well, not so much. Al Stewart is a GREAT songwriter. I love his work.
Al makes much better music than Rod. I don't like Rod Stewart at all, his voice irritates me a lot and I find boring most of his music.

Completely agree with you!! But isn't it a mellotron syntethyzer or something like these instead of a regular organ?
I also love the melody, so original and magnetic feeling!!

Always felt a distinct Shakespeare vibe listening to this song.
نیم درصد شاید یه فارسی زبان این کامنت رو ببینه ولی این اجرا یکی از ده ها اجرای بسیار زیبا وبی نظیره این خواننده هست که چهل سال پیش شنیدم
Now I'm a little older, 45 years ago I had all of All Stewart's albums and I lived with all of 2:48 them, they were my soul.
Love it so much
I like this song because of the lead guitar..great sound!!
that is such a great lead, and he has all the moves down lol'

Great Song !!!!!

Fantastic!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤magical song! Subliminal atmosphere
You can really appreciate Alan Parsons' production when you hear these live versions.
Love the sound of that screaming guitar at the end.
Yep, like listening Gilmour, but with the merit of not copying him, actually, very original notes and lines!

Thank you Renwick...!
Along with "Modern times", "Time passages" and "24 carrots"... but "Year of the cat" a bit ahead!!!

Tim Renwick! If you like One Stage Before, check out Tim Renwick. He's the best!
Yes, great underrated guitarist!!
The best Al Stewart album was Cat
Yup!
PPF makes a good run at it though, too! How about 1and 1a...??
erm no way although I do like it. Best has got to be Love Chronicles

Adam Yurman is making a fair go of the Tim Renwick solo . .. in feel not just in notes.
+kevinindublin So it's not Tim Renwick then, i thought so, he does not look like him but i could be wrong.Cheers
Thank you! Wondered what this kids name was! He's amazing! The second live guitar solo in Year Of The Cat..AWESOME!!
Reincarnation
A little tepid but still a great treat. One of my favorites and I'd never seen or heard a live version from the era. No Alan White.
Tim Renwick
who is playing other guitar? i like it!
Adam Yurman
Tim Renwick who also played w/ Clapton, studio w/ Alan Parsons, etc.
I may be wrong. but Tim played on the studio cuts. hat I know.
+1MollieM And dont forget that he played with Pink Floyd on the Division Bell tour.
Cheers
+1MollieM Yes he did, great guitar sound! on this song.No wonder Pink Floyd had him playing with them on their Division Bell tourCHeers
