I'm so thankful to my mom and dad for the musical education they provided me by having a broad eclectic collection of vinyl, and they never said "don't touch my records!"
Man I’m telling you. Jeff Lorber has got to be one of the most underrated artist ever. I have a lot of his albums on vinyl. I have had the pleasure of meeting him and he’s a cool guy.
Jeff Lorber is one of my favorite keyboard players. A couple of years ago, I saw Jeff play with Jimmy Haslip in Seal Beach. What a great evening of music!
Even though I don't have a formal musical background and much of the terminology in your videos admittedly goes over my head, I still love your videos.
Great album to "Think Back & Remember" upon, man... just special. Thank you, tremendously, for your continual love and passion for the art and sharing your time, effort and resources to craft such fine presentations to enjoy and learn from. Hat's off, sir... Salud!
I clicked the video having no idea what it would be. And in the first two seconds I recognized it, because it was one of the first albums I ever bought.
Jeff Lorber is one of my influences. I bought his albums when I was in college (including this one) and he is phenomenal. His solo albums, including Jeff Lorber Fusion and his super group, Jazz Funk Soul, are worth listening to. Thank you very much for covering this.
Jeff Lorber is so awesome. I saw him play live in the 1990's and it just blew my mind. I was so inspired after that, as a guitarist, I had to run out and buy a synth.
We've heard the song (and album) in total after watching your video. There's so much more to discover there. You can't press it into a short video. Especially Kenny G's solo on sax when he picked up Jeff Lorber's solo. Great music from this all star band. But we think smooth is not the right wording but we've did'nt find a better term yet. Thanks for presenting it to us.
Oh man, you got me back in school with this one! On V13sus chords, my brain always used to think of IVmaj9/V as opposed to ii-11 over Vsus, but something about seeing that G-11 whole arpeggio being played out like that just clicked and made sense to me just now. Love all Jeff Lorber stuff, the solo, the fusion group stuff, all of it!
I loved Jeff Lorber Fusion! The first place I saw Kenny Gorelick! Love Bob James and Dave Grusin as well! All are amazing and unique in their styles! Great video!
While maybe not landing in smooth jazz shelf at the record store, probably the most comparable album I listened to growing up with Flim and the BBs Big Note!
Brilliant video, brilliant breakdown, brilliant solo, thank you for teaching us so much, that is another album I will have to look for now, (you have extended my collection so much). Thanks again.
And again, your love for and of great music is so contageous. A pleasure to watch. And so is Jeff Lorber. Especially, when one of my favo bass cats was at his side; I had the privilege to see Jeff and Jimmy Haslip live in Amsterdam some years ago. That was really unforgettable.
First thing first.......you were privy to some great music ! Your mom had fantastic taste in music. Those were the sounds of my teens to early twenties. Thanks for giving Kenny G some shine . many folks have no idea that he was with Jeff. But yeah this improv is bananas ! Water Sign was the album that we all had . That was our intro to Jeff Lorber. Great music ! You must check out the remake of Rain Dance with vocals. Once again you knocked it outta the park Paul. You have me going through my crates digging out Lorber LOL !
Great "change of pace" video. The history of contemporary jazz can't be told without Jeff Lorber and his musical influence. "Night Love" is an amazing track to break down and savor. Many thanks!
I was just getting into Jazz as a college student when in 1979 my roommate bought the Water Sign album on a random whim. I've been a huge fan ever since and I have most if not all that Jeff has ever put out. Your mom was on point.
Saw the JLF live at Bogarts in Cincinnati in 1980. Still one of the best concerts ever when Galaxian first game out. Kenny Gs coming out party as his solo album was quickly released during that year. Amazing.
Wow, this is a mind-blowing solo in a context where I would not have been looking for one! (Now I'm wondering if I need to re-evaluate my opinion of Kenny G, if he was a part of *this*.) Something about the overall vibe of this song reminded me of the extended instrumental section of "On the Dunes" from Donald Fagen's Kamakiriad album.
Yup Kenny G can play. His first two or three albums that were produced by Jeff Lorber are actually okay to pretty good jazz funk releases. Totally different than his more aural wallpaper releases that would come later on in the decade that we all like to rag on.
Can't express my gratutude enough for the music and the musicians you ahowcase on your channel. Our musical tastes are very much aligned. Thank you and I thank RUclips Algorithms for bringing me here.
There was something about that music that seemed vaguely familiar to me, so I looked up Jeff Lorber on Wikipedia. It turns out that his music was all over the Weather Channel back in the day. I was a weather junkie as a kid, so that’s why.
I grew up on smooth jazz. CD 101.9 (a classic NYC radio station) was in HEAVY rotation on every road trip, trip to the grocery store, trip to family functions. Me and my brother shared a room and at night we’d put CD 101.9 on before we slept. Sometimes we’d stay up talking about which tune was our favorite. Man, Chuck Mangione, Spyro Gyra, Weather Report, Candy Dulfer, Kenny G, Grover Washington, Chick Corea every now and then some Bill Evans (typically late night on classic jazz segments or on Sundays). Geez, the list goes on. Edit: oh, dip was that a snippet of him playing Rain Dance at the very end of the outro?! That’s a groove if I’ve ever heard one!
look forward to your videos - sometimes - a lot of times over my head but it goes in first . didn't know Kenny G was in his group - I had 1 Jeff Lorber Fusion lp -
I always use to say … any R&B keyboardist who wants to get into bebop soloing .. just listen to some JEFF LORBER … He breaks all those bebop phrasings so clean, clearly & articulately … over his Funky instrumentals
i've worn out several copies of GALAXIAN over the years .... but for all the epic tracks on it >>> NOTHING touches the bass line and especially the KENNY G flute solo on MAGIC LADY .....I mean it SLAYS me every time
Wonderful choice for a video! Jeff Lorber's playing is a delightful mix of styles, and he has a really strong sense of melody that helps him bounce back and forth between those different styles and make it sound cohesive and even catchy. I've seen him play live twice (with Jimmy Haslip on bass!), and even got to meet them and get autographs from them after one of those shows. If you haven't yet, make sure you check out the title track from the album He Had a Hat. The chords are crazy, and yet JL still manages to solo over it effortlessly in the tag.
This is why I chuckle every time somebody says smooth jazz isn't jazz. And it sounds like The soloist is trying to imply " the lick" but just doesn't do it. Also can you do the same type of analysis for bass lines as far as where or where not to go inside or outside and where or not to put the blues cadence in???
it's modern jazz or better yet when I was growing up the term was called contemporary jazz. I was a teenager in the 70's. so I listened to rock, funk and r&b and of course jazz.
I saw Jeff several times when Smooth Jazz was popular back in the 1990's and early 2000's . However , there were many great musicians out on tour . They would burn when given their moment . The reality is they need to work and pay bills . Much respect to them all as artists .
JEFF even told me he actually write out some of those swinging bebop runs & phrases for Kenny G to play at times , here & there … He said KENNY was a good reader … and always had such a great tone …: and related so well with the Audience … (A Quality we still see so well about Kenny G till this very day 🤗🙏🏾…) Kenny really reaches out to his audience so well That’s a quality that’s beyond musical aspects …. that’s ‘SOCIOLOGICS’ 💥🤗🙏🏾
Brilliant video on so many levels. Thank you! But I think Bob James' solo on the Fourplay cover of "After the Dance" is pretty epic and could also take the title of "Greatest Smooth Jazz Piano Solo"!
I started with his Earl Klugh collaborations. As a little kid, my older siblings played their records all the time. As for solo work, remember when the “Theme from Taxi” was a hit?!?!
"Galaxian" was THE very 1st Jeff Lorber Fusion Lp, I purchased back in '82? or '83? Man, almost 50 years ago. Time is a flyingI was a Sophomore in high school at the time. Still have that Lp. "Monster Man" with Stanley Clarke guesting, on Bass and vocals was straight 🔥.
I believe that Kenneth Gorelick solo on Tierra Verde was his best. Nothing after that comes close. I played that songs over and over for hours. Jeff Lorber Fusion and David Sanborn was my introduction to smooth jazz.
That’s one of my favorite Jeff Lorber Fusion album …. GLAXIAN Coukdnt find thet one in CD for the longest .. Kept having to resort to my old turntable … Then I just recorded the whole Vinyl LP to my Mac computer … then burnt it into CD .. then later converted to MP3 … etc … 🤗🙏🏾
I hope you do a "where they are " vid on Danny Wilson . You can't lay heavy bass lines on the world and just drop off the face of the earth as he did. Water Signs album 1st track "Toads Place" first time hearing that Jeff Lorber's work of art and Danny holding it down on bass hit my soul !!! Where's Danny Wilson ? Highly unsung.
I love theory. You humanized it so much and make it exciting. I also shout you out for giving so much love to your mom. That’s what real men do. Not that I totally get what you are talking about. Your theory skills are next level.
Kenny Gee gets slagged off for being popular mostly. He did some really nice records of melodies and people love it while not liking stuff like errr something on Impulse. Gee and Jeff Lorber can definitely play . Really nice video again.
Plus the sound layers …. If one listens well , there’s some nice soft mellow lead synth sound layered with the acoustic piano . I wonder if he had a Yamaha Disklavier back then … (that has MIDI - In & Out built into the player piano system …)
Growing up in the 80's I heard a bassline from a band called Frankie goes to Hollywood 'Two Tribes' was the song and I thought that was the best bassline i'd ever heard! Have you listened to it? and could you possibly do a video on it? Big ask I know!
Great video. I am probably around the same age as your Mom and listened to to the same albums. Just my 2 cents but here goes; Jazz Fusion is not equal to Smooth Jazz. At some point in the late 80s and 90s, Jazz Fusion morphed into covers of pop tunes where every artist sounded the same. It became formula based because record companies (and musicians) became more interested in making money. Smooth Jazz became my generation's elevator music on "Quiet Storm" radio channels. I love Fusion but intensely dislike Smooth Jazz. Love you channel btw.
I was there (I'm 64)...the good stuff eventually morphed to cookie-cutter Fuzak. How 'bout "Yuppie Jazz"? Too hip for the '70s Rock they grew up on...a niche genre was fabricated. Lotta my friends liked that stuff.
I love this channel for constantly making me realize that music I thought I was beneath me was actually over my head.
Very well put! 👍🏽
THAT, dude, is a righteous realization!
There are some real treasures in the "not so loved" smooth Jazz genre. Especially in the early 80's...
The "Early" Yellow Jackets!
I'm so thankful to my mom and dad for the musical education they provided me by having a broad eclectic collection of vinyl, and they never said "don't touch my records!"
I appreciate the same thing even more now that I’m the one with the stereo my kids want to put their grubby mitts on
I’m gonna use RUclips’s feature to slow down that SLAMMIN solo 🤗 😅 Hehehe 🤭 😂🤭🤗

You are so blessed to have a Mom who exposed you to such gems. I hadn't heard Galaxian but just downloaded it. Thank you!
Jeff Lorber was a monster,….Jeff Lorber Fusion great memories,… grown folk music! Thanks for sharing

Paul.... thanks for everything you do.
I have found this channel to be the absolute best place to find interesting tunes. Really appreciate it!
He was playing around. He was serious. What devine playing that was
Jeff Lorber during the Danny Wilson era is some of my favorites. I think Water Sign and Wizzard Isand were the best.
...and Dennis Bradford on drums.
He & Wilson...both Philly guys, right?

Black Ice, Katherine, Lift Off, Jamaica, just to name a few, Jeff Lorber Fusion was killing it in the 70s and early 80s.
The information in this 8 minutes video is enough to keep you practising for years to come
If that's not a treasure i dont know what is.
Didn't even think. Just bought the album. A lick like that deserves as much attention as possible.
The album is one of his best ever 1981 killer for sure.
Jeff Lorber is so awesome. I saw him play live in the 1990's and it just blew my mind. I was so inspired after that, as a guitarist, I had to run out and buy a synth.
