Hey there Driver. So glad you were able to spare the time to drop by to catch today's upload. So, are you a die-hard Cat engine fan? Or do your loyalties lie elsewhere, like with Cummins, Detroit, Paccar? Love to hear from you.
Navistar International bas the s13 engine which is supposed to be comparable to a 450hp Cummins X15 but I've seen the engine and some of the design/engineering choices leave me scratching my head. So that's the newest engine that has come to the playing field.
Cat on the other hand, I would love to own one but I'd hate to fork out the cash to rebuild it. I could spend half to get a rebuilt Detroit and last just as long.
Worked as a fleet manager in the oilfield for many years. Didn't matter if it was the small trucks, the big trucks, or the heavy equipment, the DPFs and the piss-fluid systems were by far the most problematic parts in the machines... the mechanics used to joke that if it weren't for the DPFs and DEF systems, they'd have no jobs. Makes you wonder: account for all the manufacturing that went into them, all the extra hauling of raw materials, and then all the extra mechanic runs out there across the nation, all the extra break-downs, all the shortened lifetimes, all the extra trash and waste from packing and components, all the extra hauling of DEF (we would have several semi-loads come out once a month, then distribute the jugs across multiple job-sites), all the burning-out of DPFs to clean 'em, all the times two machines have been needed to do what one could've if not for being piss-weak and/or failing due to the DPF/DEF garbo on 'em... has the environment actually come out ahead?
The fuel company I work for has a 625 Acert. Drove it for a week, hauling fuel out of Denver to Western Colorado. That truck is a beast ! The steep grades , road speed is only a couple mph faster than a 565 Cummins. Where that big Cat shines, is when the grade begins to moderate. It picks up quickly & away you go.
I've got a 3406B in my 1985 Autocar with 616,000 original miles truck and engine. Had truck since new. The heads and oil pan have never been off even the turbo is original. The only things that have ever been replaced are starters and alternators and a water pump. Doesn't burn oil or leak it.
In 1967, I drove a '64 Pete with a 1693 and 5X4. What a beast!! A tight fit under the hood, now we know why Peterbilt came out with a extended hood. To accept Cat's !!!!
When I first started in the field worked at a truck leasing co. We had Cummins n14 some Detroits 60 and cats 3406 1winter night driver of ours axles stuck on trailer he tried to be gentle but few times Time to let the beast out. Almost rip the axles right off the trailer as he backed up with it and got him to move. It was the greatest thing I ever saw also. Back then you can feel the difference between a Cummins and Detroit and a cat and performance before Even with pre emissions
Cat Power. I’ve had a 3408 DITA, 1693 PCTA,3406 A, 3406 B, 3406E, Cat Power is or was the only way to climb a mountain ⛰️🏔️🗺️🚚Cat Power Forever. I’m with you on keeping them and rebuilding them
Still have a few cats in the fleet I drive for. I got given a brand new pete, not even 110,000 kms, despite being the brand new driver because the guy was smoking in it and the boss wasn't happy about that. It rides great but personally I drool over the idea of being given one of the cats for many reasons.
I've had both. I've had an 855 but my heart lies with the 3406 b. No electronics smooth power band good fuel economy. Have it in my 90 Kenworth w900l with an 18spd.
Thank you so much to inform me about CAT story. I had a Wenworth truck with a CAT engine. It was a 550. It was very powerful but it was using too much fuel. Thanks.
I ran a 2000 kw 900 with 3406e and it would just turn the miles. she pulled like a train and rode like a Cadillac. The old saying is true, you ever know how good you have it until it's gone. real trucks don't have D.E.F.
Good morning! Im hoping I can gain some insight from drivers here. A few days ago, a friend and I were talking at work, and he asked about the 3408. I told him I have never had any experience with them, so I didn’t want to mislead him. I don’t recall any of my uncles or my Grandpa ever owning one. However, it is in the 3400 series, and the 3406 was a great engine. This made me wonder how they drove? The big cam Cummins engines seemed happy and pulled hard between 1300 and 1800, the 3406B (425 hp) felt strong from the time you idled off the clutch all the way to 1800. I’ll say that this engine sounded great as well. It’s song was one that you felt in your chest, as well as heard. The 60 series Detroit a family friend drove was a powerhouse as well. Phillip was easy on his equipment, but it seemed like the Detroit had plenty to offer anywhere he mashed the throttle; torque was available from idle to governed engine speed, and the truck made easy work of the rolling hills. As for the 3408, being a V8, did it drive differently than the big inline 6 engines? Personally, I’ve always liked an engine that you didn’t have to rev the snot out of to get into the power; I like to idle off and have a linear torque curve that pulls hard early and predictably, as opposed to one that runs great up top, but falls flat on its face below 1500. I know it’s all preference, and transmission and final drives play a big role in the driving impression of an engine as well. I’ve never heard any complaints about the 3408, other than it liked the fuel. But, I’m interested in hearing what y’all have to say about it? Thanks, and have a great day.
I always liked Cat engines too. Never operated as many of them or the Detroits as I did the Cummins but I always had good service from the ones I did use.
I had a B Model in an 85 W900 with a 15 speed. Any single turbo Cat will serve you well. The ACERT engines had IVA issues but if you got them tuned and fixed the IVA's they were strong units
Hi Dave, Please tell us what brought the demise of the old two stroke Detroit diesels. I know they leaked a lot of oil. You could always see where one was idling all night in the truck stop. I heard they made great boat anchors!
One of the best Cat blocks is the MXS. Way better oiling and connecting rods than the 6nz series. You just have to turn it back to a single turbo and get rid of the emission crap.
Hey smart trucking love your vids can you do a vid of you driving thru the icy mountains and your opinion on using Jake’s in the snow versus regular brakes what safest
3406A 3406B 3406E stood for Electronic, then improved 3406C, better know as the C15, C16, C18, love them or hate them, they were expensive and for the most part a really good engine but not without fault
Put 1 000 000 miles on a beautiful 01 western star and my company replaced it with a max force prostatic only to give me my old star back awesome engine in over a 1 000 0000 miles we changed injectors and cups 1 set of bearings and the alternator once I miss that truck new trucks don’t have any soul
If I got my story straight, didn't the lettuce king in later years, get a Detroit that at first wasn't so hot, but then a Detroit dealer in Bakersfield CA set it up properly for him, then it was pretty impressive???
Your wrong it was the 1673 little brother to the 1693...1673 made roughly 200 220 horsepower first cat in heavy road trucks back in the day memory serves me right 50s 60s?
Cat was a very good engine but as we all know power comes with fuel consumption Detroit series 60 gets better fuel mileage and cheaper to repair than cat and very reliable
Epa are bunch of idiots the Cat was a good motor I always hated a Cummins and I started buying detroit with 60 series but now detroit sucks with newer motor and all makes of trucks now are throw away trucks not worth having just money pits

I'd rather stick with a series 60. It's easier to repair and it's a predictable motor, kinda like earlier Detroit and Cummins engines.
Cat on the other hand, I would love to own one but I'd hate to fork out the cash to rebuild it.
I could spend half to get a rebuilt Detroit and last just as long.
The last truck I drove before being forced to retire had a Cat C15 and in all the 40 years of driving I NEVER had a better Engine .
Have owned several Cats in my 47 year career.1674,1693,2 425c's,and my current 3406e with 2.5 million miles with 2 overhauls.Cats have served me well.
Ain't nothing like a caterpillar engine - Jack Crews
LOL!!! I love that he says that after (the viewers) hearing the hum of a Detroit Diesel engine climbing a hill.

It was a sad day for the trucking guys, when cat said no more, but I definitely get it
CAT CAN’T BE BEAT !! Keep oil and filters changed it will last !!
Don't forget to not abuse it

Absolutely there's nothing like a CAT engine no other engine will ever compare

Driving a 15 acert right now and it's been great
I drove a truck with a Cat engine 3406 475 hp I love this truck.

You didn't mention the c 16. Very fun to drive in the mountains running with your Cummins friends.
Good morning! Im hoping I can gain some insight from drivers here.

The C15 had more blow by when it was new than an old Cummins ever did.
I always liked Cat engines too. Never operated as many of them or the Detroits as I did the Cummins but I always had good service from the ones I did use.
A friend of mine has a 3406B with over 3 million miles on it. I've done 2 in frames on it. The bearings come out clean with almost no wear.
I enjoyed this video very much ❤
i drove 55 freightiner cabover with 250 cat
Great video, Love cats. Doubt if you can go over Donner without dropping a gear at 80,000 lbs. but I would love to see it.
I never drove a 3408 but I did drive the 318 Detroit and a couple Mack E-9’s and there’s just something about a V-8 for pulling power
The MaxForce engine nearly destroyed International.
I had a B Model in an 85 W900 with a 15 speed. Any single turbo Cat will serve you well. The ACERT engines had IVA issues but if you got them tuned and fixed the IVA's they were strong units
Nothing pulls like a Cat!

Once you upgrade to a CAT engine, you won't turn back.

If it's not a cat, it's a Dawg
You didnt talk about the 225 cat?
One thing cat had was that it wasn't a hyper engine like a Cummins but plenty of torque.
What about when CAT once made their own trucks back recently, like in around 2014-2017?
God made man and CAT made them equal
Put 1 000 000 miles on a beautiful 01 western star and my company replaced it with a max force prostatic only to give me my old star back awesome engine in over a 1 000 0000 miles we changed injectors and cups 1 set of bearings and the alternator once I miss that truck new trucks don’t have any soul

Their small and midrange engines are 2nd to Cummins in my opinion, but no one can touch them in the larger cubic inch class.
Yup, that was a sad day Dave. Damn government BS.
Anyone who has a C15 is holding it like you said
Do a video on Detroit they ruled the east
Lettuce King had a sweet Pete!
That is exactly why we need LESS government and not more!
Nothing but trouble!
Your wrong it was the 1673 little brother to the 1693...1673 made roughly 200 220 horsepower first cat in heavy road trucks back in the day memory serves me right 50s 60s?
And peeps don't confuse the c with the peec. What do Detroit's and green bananas have in common besides their color? They can't wait to turn yellow
If it's not a Cat...it must be a dog. 😉
My kubota is 40 horse and y has regen system on it. Like the tractor hate it the regen
Never been a fan of clatterpillars. Never had any luck with them. I'm a big camm n14 guy
Just like everything else the government puts there nose in it's ruined everything about trucking I got out and I'm glad I did
Next best one was Detroit GM screamin. Demon I a old Screamin Jimmy guy
100% facts. The government ruined CAT.
What doesn't the government ruin??
The Accert engine in Australia were no good at all unfortunately
Cult of the CAT
Muh 6undzee
Stay outta California 😢
Leave it to the government to screw up a good thing.
Cat was a very good engine but as we all know power comes with fuel consumption Detroit series 60 gets better fuel mileage and cheaper to repair than cat and very reliable
Yup Cat was more dependable then Clunking Cummins
Epa are bunch of idiots the Cat was a good motor I always hated a Cummins and I started buying detroit with 60 series but now detroit sucks with newer motor and all makes of trucks now are throw away trucks not worth having just money pits
