This is very cool!! I am going to show this to my almost 14 year old daughter. In the spring she is going to start her 3rd year of NICA racing and is doing random CAT2 women's events. So far to date she has never finished off the podium. She has so much talent that she hasn't figured out the training part and the need for it. Hoping maybe after hearing this it might open her eyes to the possibilities if she puts in the training.
Sounds like she's super talented, but let her decide to start training when she wants to. We know too many kids who got burned out because they took it too seriously too early. If she's having fun, she'll keep doing it!
Syd, I loved listening to your story! You have a great way of encouraging new riders like myself to keep going and keep growing on my mountain bike, even when I’m not feeling my strongest and frustrated when others do better than I do and I can’t figure out what I’m doing “wrong” . Thank you for your honesty and candid storytelling about your biking experience and growth. You rock! Thanks! And so nice meeting you and enjoying a yummy Mexican dinner in Moab with you guys. Great, humble, funny people. :) hope you run into you again! -Summer
Great story! My family and I used to vacation at Lake Hope State park every summer when I was a kid, this was in the 80's there weren't any mountain bike trails there yet.
Hey guys I am in seventh grade and have been watching for a while now and I have just gotten into biking and I found this video super inspiring. You guys have made great content for the longest time and deserve more recognition. You have inspired me and many others and for that I say thank you.
I found you and Macky while I was searching for the best tutorial on trueing a wheel (yours worked best for me) Then my 8 yr old daughter and I started watching your POV rides as a wind down before bed (regardless of the adrenaline rush she’d get). When she watched this video and saw Lake Hope and your Athens XC top, she was befuddled. Yes, we’re watching it all from our home here in Athens
That was a wonderful story and you did a great job telling it. I'm going to go back and read the chat replay. I love hearing riders stories . Thanks for sharing the experience .
First of all Mazel Tov on the wedding. May you have a wonderful life together. Secondly, Syd, you are a natural story teller, so comfortable in front of the camera. Love this format. Mackey, love you Bro, but Syd’s story was so much more interesting. lol.... Syd, never ever cut your hair. You looked so cute with the short hair but awesome with the ponytail.
Thank you for making this video- You're a great ambassador for the sport through your blogs and videos. Keep up the great riding and being more awesome :)
We are nica coaches and put 5 years in so far with my stepson doing 4 years through his whole highschool times.... Stepdaughter will be on her 6th and final year of high school racing and be a varsity rider, my son will start the middle school program this year so we as a family have another 7 years to go if he continues to ride.
Great vid! Awesome story and it's definitely inspiring to see your dad getting you involved so early on! My wife is also a big fan and watches your videos with me. Can't wait to see what 2019 brings, especially that cool BC race!
We used to pull our puppies around in a cart but our Orbeas don't allow us to do it anymore. Thank you for the background story. It's nice to know a little history.
This is so fun. I'm probably your dad's age and started mountain biking in the mid 80s before high school. A lot has changed. My kids are riding mountain trails buy 1st grade.
So awesome makes me remember my childhood with bikes! Being on the back of the bike riding with my grandpa and my first mountain bike! Working on getting back out on the trails, have a fixed gear rn but saving for a decent trail bike 🚲
Help us hit 310 team members on Patreon so we can do an awesome custom one-time sticker! patreon.com/sydandmacky We got lots of questions about Syd's dino shirt. It's made by Cyclelogical. We don't know if they're selling it anymore, but make sure to check out our Syd and Macky collection (we helped design these ones!): www.cyclelogicalgear.com/syd-macky-collection/
I never realized you were from Athens! I grew up in Nelsonville. I am in Cali now. If you guys make it to Sea Otter in October let me know. It is literally my backyard. Love the content!
Congrats! Great wedding photo! You are my favorite 'power couple' on the 'net. I am in a 20+ year marriage and I think you two will (continue to) be excellent to/for each other. Thanks for sharing your story. You and your family are some kickass riders. I really appreciate your comment about being a kid seeing what you can do on your bike - still true today. That is the marrow of mountain biking, right there! Since you asked, long hair works better visually for you imo. I rock short hair, used to have long hair, it drove me nuts. I'll never go back to long personally. Depends on if you are going for feel or look, I guess. Your story is inspiring. I am not at a point in my life where racing makes sense beyond weekend recreation someday. That said, the general principles of building on progress are applicable in many contexts. Thanks for the stoke!
@@sydandmacky Thanks! There are ups and downs, "glad to be here", but it took us a long time to communicate like you and Macky do on video. Believe it or not, your channel helps me communicate with my spouse more effectively on long rides. You are a great couple off to a very strong start!
You guys are inspiring. I have always been keen on cycling but only got into XC the last few years. Awesome to hear you say you came to New Zealand. I'm from Southland and this year competed in the Motatapu Race.
I grew up right down the road from Douthat state park, I’m actually planning to do my first mtn bike race there in May! Awesome trails there and Slaty Fork.
Missed this one. I throw a big thumbs up to bike trailers filled with kids. Rode around in one of those then towed siblings for intervals (kidding). If that was an orange in the bottle holder, I like it’s style. Pretty rad orange.
You guys are awesome. Thanks for the inspiration to ride again and maybe take part in some races. Most importantly you've inspired me to be a more supportive/ better boyfriend! Shout out from Santa Fe NM.
Hello Syd, Love watching yours vid, As you mention today Nica provide great platform for kids and My daughter 8 grade huge talent racing this up coming season 2020 Nica N.Y with the JV Girls. the Atmosphere is amazing and the quality is becoming superb. Wish you all the best with racing and your marriage, and keep your long hair.
I am so late to your videos but this is so Awesome love that you found an old Jamis bike that your dad rode! That is so cool. I just wish I never stopped riding I use to do lots of jumping on my BMX in the 70s
It was cool to hear about your adventures in Ohio. I'm originally from Michigan, so I used to do a few rides in Ohio. Used to go down every Mother's Day weekend for TOSRV. Did your dad ever do the GONZO festival at snow trails in Mansfield. They even had a Cactus cup event there once, with big inflatable Cactus all over the grounds
Awesome. I carted my son in a trailer (or buggie) when he was very young also. The I got a Wahoo bike seat which is mounted on the top tube just like what your Dad did with you. I considered a rear mounted bike seat but I though the view would be better for him if he sat up front instead in the back where his view would be mostly of my back.
My fiend attached the buggy carrier to a dirt bike and removed the top cover and drove me around at Over 30mph a roosting next in the face when we went through puddles
I used to see your mom every time I rode Lake Hope. She was just “the Lake Hope Lady I always see.” Then I saw her in one of your vids when you were leaving your parents and I was like that’s the lady I always see at Lake Hope. Pretty funny. I’ll have to say something to her next time I see her riding LH or Strouds/Sells.
I am a Gary Fisher idiot. I love all his bikes and buy them whenever I possibly can afford another. My favorite is the Big Sur. There was a yellow Big Sur on ebay that escaped me. I just had so much other stuff grabbing my "Gary Fisher" savings. HAHAHAHAHA Life.
What I really want to know is how many takes (apparently reproduced again for this video) it took to get the endo kiss that you use for your logo. Did it result in any injuries, get it on the first take? Anyway, cool logo.
This is the video that the original came from: m.ruclips.net/video/2SKW4CKWoh8/видео.html We actually nailed it the first time, but the camera guy wasn't filming and then it took a bunch of tries to reproduce it! For the wedding photo, it took 4 or so because we're out of practice!

If you want to chat I will offer advice with the caveat that I am just a rider like you who went through learning my own set-up. I did learn general benchmarks, but no one can give you specifics. In the end, you are your own best expertise.

Your Dad had an amazing mustache
Amazing is an understatement. I'm a straight man and that mustache makes my knees weak. 😅
I started scrolling to find this comment
If I didn't know any Better I would've thought Syd's dad was Calvin Jones
Congratulations on getting married. You both looked great. Peace
Always fun going along on you guys’ trips and rides. I love the stories behind your rides, travels, and upbringing.
Watching this a year later to get myself through a trainer ride. Thanks so much for sharing, I loved hearing your story and it was great inspiration!
Thank you for making this video- You're a great ambassador for the sport through your blogs and videos. Keep up the great riding and being more awesome :)
Thank you 😊
You are incredible Syd...... Sunday bike rides after dinner were awesome as a kid and I remember everyone in my family really enjoying it
Excellent personal documentary down the rabbit hole.

Thanks!
I have a Mach 6 also. That's my "bike park" bike and I love it.

Amazing story! Reminds me of Jacquie Phelan, the times NORBA women's champion.
I never realized you were from Athens! I grew up in Nelsonville. I am in Cali now. If you guys make it to Sea Otter in October let me know. It is literally my backyard. Love the content!

I rode in those bike rides in Ohio. Also your mom and Dad look real familiar.

I tow my kid in a Burley trailer every weekend. It's so much fun!
Love to watch it live but it will be like 2 am when its on.. Im sure it will be quality to watch..
That's a reasonable excuse!
Congrats
I know more about how syd and Macky met than how my parents met
This was awesome thank you !
Great story, a few similarities to mine (Never made it to Pro), but did get to race a LOT.

Nice!
I wish I'd done that with my son
Thank you!
We are in NICA here is SC. My son is in 8th grade and does really well. I help coach. It's been pretty cool
Your Dad looks like Ned Overend.
Vermont! My home state!💚
Congratulations on getting married
Great video. Peace

Hi, nice feed, ...visit Romania for nice trails and some DH race at Arena Platos. ;-) or you can try Carpathian MTB Epic 4 stage race. Regards CJ
My fiend attached the buggy carrier to a dirt bike and removed the top cover and drove me around at Over 30mph a roosting next in the face when we went through puddles
25:00 those socks would not be UCI approved😂

Love your vid

NICA Coach with a NICA kid! State Championship race this weekend!
Good luck!
Love your vids
Maryland nica 👍🏻

We actually nailed it the first time, but the camera guy wasn't filming and then it took a bunch of tries to reproduce it! For the wedding photo, it took 4 or so because we're out of practice!
Nica is amazing
Hey, my wife and I will be visiting some family in NM in July. We will staying in Santa Fe but will also be in/around Albuquerque. We are planning on hitting up Angel Fire bike park but what are other MUST rides while we are there?
If you want a really awesome (but long) back country ride, do South Boundary between Taos and Angel Fire!
Ohio summers... Hot and humid? Lol this is exactly why I don't race here. Zanesville is miserable in the summer on the trails.
One of the most miserable races of my life was at Dillon Creek (?) near Zanesville I think.
SYD and MACKY Dillon State Park is one of the local trails. It's where I learned to ride. I can definitely see it making for a top ranking miserable race.
Your long hair is better and interesting video 👍
Keep the hair😎.
I have a suspension? For you guys, I’m a large guy, can they re-valve a rear shock for my weight?
Yup, for sure! I think MAD Suspension (they're the suspension crew in Reno we use) can do it if you don't have someone you normally send stuff to.
No expert here, but what shock and weight? Many new shocks can take a lot of psi if you adjust damping as well. If you want to chat I will offer advice with the caveat that I am just a rider like you who went through learning my own set-up. I did learn general benchmarks, but no one can give you specifics. In the end, you are your own best expertise.
Wasabi Wei the shock is a dpx2 fox, I weigh 290 to 300lbs.
Have you tried going to the library for internet?
Not nearly fast enough in most places. Plus, they aren't super supportive of live videos happening there 😋
I do NICA :D
no socks = less weight
😂
UCI have banned socks like those now
I'm a NICA kid lol
Riding with no socks stinky
Gorgeous BRIDE!!!!
