Britain: A kingdom for you, a kingdom for you, aaaaand... guess what? A kingdom for you! Everybody ok? Middle east: *NO* Britain: Great! I'm done here, bye!
I feel like the Saudi conquest of Hejaz was a VERY big deal historically - whether independent, obedient to a Caliphate, or vassals under a Turkish empire, the Hashimite family had ruled that region (and been custodians of the holy cities of Mecca and Medina) for literally all of Islamic history. Until Saud.
I think the reason he why he managed to control hijaz is that he unifed the vast majority of the population under one banner and made all the tribes work together which is really difficult to do.
Indeed.. Bin Saud was never a friend of the british (They fought him at first) until he proved himself on the ground and unified most of Arabia. He was a true leader.. Arabia, with its different cultures and tribes wouldn't bow to one family, but Ibn Saud made that possible!
A lot of infighting between sects and leaders that involves Hejaz (and Mecca specifically) was due to perceived "weakness" of current custodian, especially near the First Saudi State era. While Hashemites generally are decent Sharif that managed to keep the holy site safe, things turned south when they get too much involved in politics and let the Turkish authority profit off the pilgrims. Not to mention they neglected a basic necessity like sanitation *so badly* that the region was basically breeding ground for cholera. This was a far cry from centuries of custom where the Caliph actually paid the Sharif to ease logistical burdens of pilgrims. Which in turns maintain their image of authority and keep the religion grows by subsidizing _musafir_ during their study in holy city (a role that gradually shifted to Baghdad, and later, Cairo). In the word of Wilfrid Blunt about the Dutch East Indies pilgrimage policy at the end of 19th century: "From the moment of his landing on the holy shore he finds himself beset with dangers. He is fleeced by the Turkish officials, befooled by the religious touts of the towns, and sometimes robbed openly by actual highway robbers. The religious government of the land has no redress to offer him, and the Turkish guardians of the peace who affect to rule are only potent in demanding fees. At every step he is waylaid and tricked and ill-treated. He finds the Hejazi, the keepers of the holy places and privileged ciceroni of the shrines, shrewder as men of business than devout as believers, and he returns to his home a sadder and, the Dutch say, a wiser man." Not that the Saud did a better job in the latter part, but at least they kept the pilgrims relatively safe (at the expense of the Shiite followers that got kicked out from time to time).

4:00 Dude, it is barely religious or cultural in cause, these came later. It's like calling the British colonization religious and cultural, while it can be clearly understood in a colonial context. Jewish immigration was by that time growing alarmingly fast, and the Balfour declaration wasn't a secret, the Arabs were fighting for control and unequivocally opposed to a Jewish state that rules over them or might displace them, since no matter how you look at it, the Arabs were always the majority. Also, the Arabs were the ones screwed over by the Brits not the Zionists, it was through the 1920 riots that the British learned that the Arab population wasn't going to take this easy. After the riots, we saw groups like the Irgun and Haganah being armed and trained by the British, hardly 'left behind'. Britain was going into this knowing full well that a Jewish state is to be established, this whole 'just an experiment' thing without displacement is just being dishonest after declaring the intent to establish a state. And it's like you said in your videos: The people were never consulted in the creation of these states (i.e. Sykes-Picot divisions). Well then why not treat Palestine with the same scale? The population definitely didn't want a Jewish state! It was forced upon them. Only the Zionists, be it Jewish, Christians or Muslims wanted that, and by that time they were definitely by far not a majority.
European colonization and occupation of Muslim countries was different from colonization of other countries. The religious/cultural struggle component was always present. You can't just forget 14 century of quasi continuous conflict between Christian,then secular, west and Islamic east.

I... would NOT suggest starting with Benny Morris. He's far too cavalier about subjects like ethnic cleansing and mass expulsion of Palestinians. I'm being VERY nice to him, nicer than I feel he deserves, and while he certainly has value as a historian, his personal views are IMO impossible to reconcile with his work.
Contrary to what is said here, the early opposition between palestinian farmers and european jewish settlers was economical and not cultural or religious : - many sephardim Jews lived peacefully in Palestine under the Ottomans, as many christian Palestinians did, proving that religious or cultural lines were not enough for people to kill each other; - before WWI, european Zionists had begun buying lands in Palestine to palestinian feudal landlords, and they refused to keep the palestinian farmers living on those lands (which was the traditional way of doing things), since the plan was to bring european settlers; many Palestinians were deprived of the lands they had been working on since generations, as well as their primary mode of survival; This is and alwas was about land, economy and political power and certainly not about religion or culture.

It's for the Black Lives Matter protests here in the U.S. recently an officer placed his knee on the neck of an unarmed, seemingly cooperative black man for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. This resulted in death of this man by asphyxiation, which the original coroners tried to report it was due to possible underlying medical issues or intoxication. A private autopsy proved this to be false and that these officers+coroners attempted to cover-up/downplay the murder of an innocent man.

Great series. Congrats on that. But i felt like this last episode was kind of rushed in. Maybe this part can be a whole series in the future? Would love to see more about the role played by wahhabism or ba'athism, for exemple, in this region.
There's not a lot of content on RUclips about that, which is a shame. I do get why though... it's not exactly a subjects that usually spawns calm and measured conversation.

"We haven't talked about much Palestine because......" No need for explanation, that's gonna need 10 episodes at least to explain.
Also, from how you explained it, wouldn't it have been easier for the european powers to leave and just set up trade agreements with the region instead of trying to occupy them, because from how you described it, even right out of the gate, it was a dumpster fire that refused to go out.
"No need for explanation, that's gonna need 10 episodes at least to explain."

5:27 Ive seen those numbers before
4:00 Dude, it is barely religious or cultural in cause, these came later.
Great series! My only feedback is: more maps!! It’s confusing sometimes to understand what region you are referring to at a particular time since the borders changed so much so quickly.

This was particularly great and enlightening extra history. As someone intimately familiar with Israel Palestine, I found no issue with your brief discussion of it. I think it would be awesome to do an in-depth series on the conflict, but like, I completely understand why you haven’t so far. The controversy, oy. If you do decide to get into it, I’d recommend Benny Morris as a starter historian.
I... would NOT suggest starting with Benny Morris. He's far too cavalier about subjects like ethnic cleansing and mass expulsion of Palestinians. I'm being VERY nice to him, nicer than I feel he deserves, and while he certainly has value as a historian, his personal views are IMO impossible to reconcile with his work.

Contrary to what is said here, the early opposition between palestinian farmers and european jewish settlers was economical and not cultural or religious :
- many sephardim Jews lived peacefully in Palestine under the Ottomans, as many christian Palestinians did, proving that religious or cultural lines were not enough for people to kill each other;
- before WWI, european Zionists had begun buying lands in Palestine to palestinian feudal landlords, and they refused to keep the palestinian farmers living on those lands (which was the traditional way of doing things), since the plan was to bring european settlers; many Palestinians were deprived of the lands they had been working on since generations, as well as their primary mode of survival;
This is and alwas was about land, economy and political power and certainly not about religion or culture.

Can anyone explain the 8 minutes and 46 seconds video?
Slack-tavism
It's for the Black Lives Matter protests here in the U.S. recently an officer placed his knee on the neck of an unarmed, seemingly cooperative black man for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. This resulted in death of this man by asphyxiation, which the original coroners tried to report it was due to possible underlying medical issues or intoxication. A private autopsy proved this to be false and that these officers+coroners attempted to cover-up/downplay the murder of an innocent man.
Read it's description, it's about the racial inequality and police brutality protests happening all around in the USA

The British no longer have a hold as strong as it use to be because numerous countries rose against them . The ottomans fell because they ran their government through a millet system ( aka they gave less power to none muslims) and soon These Great United States Of America will fall unless we truly abide by our oaths and moto's . we all, every god forgiving person who breathes the same air I breathe , has the god given right to LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!
