Stuart I enjoy watching you work, the complex combinations you use to make the handles of your knifes is what we in Canada call - "Sharp" as in unique and well thought out. I do how ever have a technical question for you regarding 2x72 grinders, and that being why doesn't anyone use steel or cast iron wheels in the machine set up?
I posted a comment on RUclips about your work and you responded but I requested a Damascus chisel on your “sale” page via Facebook to which you never responded....why is that, I thought people need to make money selling their goods....if you don’t respond you can forget me wanting you to make a chisel.....don’t advertise for work then ignore requests.
My apologies Mark. If I'm busy I'll read a message but not respond. It often happens I will forget about it. But to answer your question, late though it may be, I do not make chisels. If you haven't already got one I can recommend someone who may be able to help. Also these are tutorials not advertisements. Stu
You are a master at this trade buddy.....I’m not sure where or who taught you but you probably the best on RUclips .....you explanations are second to none, you should be very proud of your work....bravo !
Not a negative comment about your welding. I'm no good at welding. Which brings me to my question. I can't weld, but I can braze like a boss. Do you think brazing would hold a threaded nut well enough?
No smart arse self congratulatory point, but a genuine question because I am interested, but wouldn't a leather 'washer' between blade and guard do the same as the plastic washer and just look more traditional?
its a good question. Many makers do use leather. The downside is that it will swell and shrink over time if not treated propely, evetually disintergrating. I use G10 these days as it is far longer lasting than previous materials I have used.
Very nice hippo tooth.. that sould be super cool lookin, one thing i did is forge my knife a little longer and thread the end of the knife , im sure you werent thinkin about that and forging on the fly... really nice knife
on your welding Stuart, and this has nothing to do with the quality or otherwise, if you were to grind a 6 mm slot in the end of the tang say 10 or 12mm deep you can slide the 6mm threaded rod into it and weld it all up and you would have a better hold on the blade than if you had welded it to the end . You can also up the amps a bit and get a deeper bite of weld into both pieces. And once ground off, Hey Ho! perfect weld!
Your technique of using the drill press as a guide to tap a piece has been really helpful. thanks for that, and nice work!
Great job, thank you for the tips.

Clarhett Coalfield our grinders are 2 by 78 and I have no idea why they don't use cast iron. Aluminium is just the way I buy them. thanks for watching
Beautiful job. Wish you could tighten my sog tech bowie pommel keeps coming loose even after factory "fixed" it.
Your welding is a sore point then ?
Do you sell these knives?
I do. Have a look on my FaceBook fan page under Smith Hand Forged Knives to see whats available and see past work.
Ok. I had had a look at your fb page but did not see the section of what you had to sell specifically and price also where to cash out.
Ron Byjoo it's not actually a sales page because everything I make sells quick. if you like something let me know and you can place an order.
show de bola

mark 1 eyeball, most used measuring device/tool in the shop
thanks for teaching me how to make my own threaded cap. I was always struggling with it. and thanks for the tip about the thread cutting.
Not a negative comment about your welding. I'm no good at welding. Which brings me to my question. I can't weld, but I can braze like a boss. Do you think brazing would hold a threaded nut well enough?
Definitly. Unfortunately i lack any brazing equipment
Outstanding....
Your welding... is worlds better than mine.
Well done.
Thanks
Tim

Watching and re-watching a lot of these videos Stewart, I think you have the best presentation and teaching demeanour on RUclips, thanks mate 👍
Getting ready to do this for the first time and your video helped a lot. Thx.

Those welds are gorgeous compared to mine
Great videos, definetely helping, subscribing :) btw. i found u throught freerk wieringa channel
Thanks. Glad I could help.
At least you can weld. I'm trying to figure out how to do a threaded end piece without welding.
Sam Harper you can always braise it on
if your filing skills were good you could file the tip of the tang to a rod and then thread it!
Thanks for the video. Just a question, why do you use just one hand?
cos I was holding the camera with the other :)
Thanks.
