I love having the AVX system for my weddings. The advantage of going wireless is that you can always be monitoring the audio if you want and make adjustments and just the peace of mind that is is all being recorded correctly.
I love my H1 + Smart Lav+ combo. Ive ran the thing for 6+ hours with no problem. It splits the audio files after a while for size but considering it takes cheap cards and batteries, its a great kit to have in the bag. Even when i upgrade to a better wireless system, its a great, cheap backup.
Wedding Film School Still... I try to work harder on my videos but cant even get to half of the quantity youre putting out. Are there gonna be less videos when you need to focus on that hipster wedding at the end of this month?
I ended up recording this video three times this morning. I didn't like the way the first went as far as what I talked about, it was too long and boring. The second time I recorded everything the focus on my eyes was off a tiny bit. I was using manual focus and didn't measure correctly. The last time was quick, fun and to the point. There's always a lot of work that goes into making these tiny little 3 minute tutorials. Glad you're enjoying the final product.
Kraig we shot our first wedding in Sept and thanks to your tutorials we did an excellent job! In fact, the couple requested a 2nd video of their fireworks reveal. So we were able to get paid again using footage we already had! We would have been lost without you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Now back to this vid because we need more audio equipment. lol
I use 2 Tascam DR05s. Once I switched to FCX where I can sync multi clips with ease, I stopped using a wireless mic setup. Along with that I have a Rode mic on one of my cams. On another note, I saw you were here in Greenville at the Westin Poinsette hotel. If you are down this way again, hit me up.
I use a now up to 4 digital recorders from Olympus (DS-30, 2x WS-811, VN-711). I bought them all on eBay very cheap (6-32€ priceII Range) and I use them together with Zalman Mic-1. And you know what - its enough quality for everything what happens during the wedding (64-192kbits), No Matter what it is - Interview or Church Ceremony (Zoom H4n do all the other stuff). I really love this inexpenssive solution.
I recently bought a Smartlav+ with CS3 adapter and ZOOM H1. This is for me the perfect combination and quality / price to record sound on people for me. Great that you made this video, I was curious about the comparison between the Smartlav+ and Sennheiser AVX. I love the Smartlav+ just like you! Keep going Kraig 😄
aCrazyAfro do you typically mic the groom and the officiant or just one? It’s my first wedding and I’m on a budget but if I buy just one and mic the groom will I have good audio for the other 2 ?
We used 2 senheiser avx (officiant and groom) connected to a zoomh6 that is located in the back next to our equipment and also as a backup a dr40 conected to the main board or dj recording odb and -12db just in case. for first look groom has a zoom h1 with a smartlav
Kraig, I imported a Tascam DR-10CS. It's killer. I paired it with a countryman B3 and it works with the locking connector. It's also smaller than any other recorder I've found and records a backup track! I use an H1 with a smartlav too, still a great combo for sure.
It's kind of hard to find a place that will ship it to the US, since there's actually a company blocking the sale of it here, but for anyone wondering..I ordered from juno.co.uk and it came perfectly fine, because FUCK THA LAW.
I have used the Shure MXL with the adapter with the Zoom H1 and works well for less than $200 for all of it so recommend it as another option for those on a tighter budget.
I used a handheld mic splitter to my recorder and dj console at ceremony and reception plus the wireless set so that way I'm in control of the audio 100% no matter what changes the dj could do it will not affect my signal!
Im interested in learning more about your audio setup where you are in 100% control. I can't tell you how many times I have gotten "dirty" audio from a DJ. I rather not even take a feed from the DJ anymore.
Thanks for the video. I have the Smartlav+ setup and enjoying it so far. I'm about to shoot a wedding in Sri lanka in December. We'll see how that turns out!. :)
Hi Kraig! As a young wedding filmmaker I love your videos. I've got the Rode Smartlav + and I use a smartphone to record the audio. I HAVE a Tascam Dr22WL (similar to Zoom H1) but I rather use a smartphone as it is much smaller!
I tried smartlav with phone and rode wireless kit with a recorder. The smartlav and phone was easy to use and slim, only worry is disconnecting the lav. The rode wireless was too bulky and required a recorder rig to be made to bring around. I suppose you could put the receivers and recorder onto the camera but I like to shoot without rigs at weddings. It was great to be able to start and stop the audio but aside from that the wired lav solution is better.
I use a Tram 250 lavaliere connected to a Roland R-05 which is the size of a pack of cigarettes and will place that in the groom's pocket. I also have a Zoom H4N that I tend to use at the reception or to to record ambient room sound during the ceremony if I don't have my Sennheiser ew100 G3 wireless system connected to it.
I have been using a pair of rode wireless lavs. They sound very similar to the smart lav +, but the fact I can record both internally to a c100 without syncing in post makes it well worth it in my opinion.
this would be a much better test If the recorder wasn't something potentially limiting the mics, do you have a more expensive recorder to test these on? like a sound devices recorder?
That is awesome! Thanks for responding. I have been binge watching your videos the past couple weeks. I just got a call tonight for my first ever paid wedding gig. So I really need to up my audio abilities soon. I am thinking of buying a zoom h5 and a zoom h1
Thanks for another great video. Possible noob question but what are EQ effects and how do you use them? I guess its equalising but in practice what does that mean for your edit - how is it done and what is its effect. Does it just level out audio peaking or is there more to it? Thanks
I have a really random question: I've been using a glidecam and a7sii for filming and I'm wondering how to best maintain sharp focus. Do you use a follow focus system? Have a higher aperture? Peaking? Just naturally amazing at focusing?
Using couple of Sennheiser Wireless combinations with SK300 G3 and EK300 G3 bodypacks and Sennheiser ME2 Mics or SKM100-835 G3 Handhelds. Recording all signals coming together with Zoom H6, for which I also have a couple of mics, like XY, MS and Shotgun MS... - Like this, the records stay with me and I can control them visibly at any time, rather than finding out after an event, that a recorder has not recorded for some reason...
Can you do a new video of how you adjust your settings for shooting with a Rode Mic on your A7S? I shot a wedding following your previous tutorial on the 5D iii but the audio is unusable. The levels were fine during the shoot but when I got home and played it back in my laptop everything clips, even the dialog sounds distorted =\
Hey Kraig:) I just wanted to know what the difference between the recorders is. I have a SmartLav+ and have it attached to my iphone. Is that okay or should I upgrade to a zoom H1 or H4 or should I just stay with my Iphone. Is there any difference in the sound? Thanks so much!
Hi there, I've just one zoom H1 with rode mic. Do you think, it's is sufficient to cover wedding. I get lots of tips from you. After watching this episode, it appears I need 3-4 zoom. Should I buy another 2 zoom with rode mic to my wedding kit?
I'm a new film maker... And the first couple of weddings I did I used the smart lav, and since I knew the bride and groom for each wedding, I just used their smart phones to record the audio (they were ok with this). This could be "option 4" and is a fraction of the cost, since you don't need the Zoom H1.
+Kraig Adams agreed. In my case, a family member asked if I could record last minute and I needed to find a quick and cheap solution to get audio. It worked. But it was a hassle getting the audio from their phones afterward. Not to mention the fear of the phone dying.
I have the Rode Smart Lav+ with the Zoom H1 setup and I think it gives me great quality and is truly bang for your buck. PS! I went with that setup based on your recommendation a year ago @Kraig Thanks alot
hello kraig! greetings from México! Question: i know you mic the groom and the oficiant, but how do you mic the bride? i mean, its kind of hard with de bride dress and all don't you? thank u
Awesome man. I am currently using the smartlav+ into my iphone, which I slip into the grooms pocket. It works well, but ofcourse, it drains my phone and is only a 1 audio system. My question is, how do you mount these? The H1 is definetely somewhat a thick profile... do you just put that in the grooms pocket? Or do you mount it on a belt or something? What about the bride?? where do you hide this system?
Just curious, how are you monitoring the audio being recorded into your phone when its in the Groom's pocket? Do you just set the levels beforehand and pray nothing peaks? I was considering using my phone once but I need it for behind the scene photos and what not LOL!
I actually went with the zoom h1 and rhode smart lav Really good deal and sounds great even better after post audio What gain level do you have your zoom at with smart lav usually ?
One wedding, I used a Canon 5D Mark II, Nikon D7000 and a Go Pro Hero 3 Black. I Color graded everything with Magic Bullet and got a fairly decent uniformed look. The B&G were happy with their video and that is all that matters to me! LOL!
So I ordered a Rode SmartLav+, a Zoom H1 and the SC3 adapter and they finally arrived! But I'm having trouble finding the best input level for the Smartlav+ on the H1... What input level do you usually record with with this kit? Thanks in advance
I just got mine last week as well. I've been testing it and the input level is fantastic at around 60 in a quiet environment but it also depends where you'd be using the setup at.
I have thought about getting zoom h1s for my weddings. but I have always been held back by the size. Currently I'm using a wireless lav set up. Do you find the h1s to be a little big to put into the groom's pocket?
The h1s are a bit bulky in the pocket especially if you wrap the rest of the lav cord around it. I try to put it in the groom's pocket that's facing the officiant (away from the audience) so that it doesnt show on camera as much.
ive been using H1s and a Roland R-05 for the past few years and lately ive had a few grooms say that the H1 is too bulky in their jacket or pants pockets because of the bulge on the top of the recorder. this was making me consider getting a couple of R-05s instead of the rest of my H1s since its a bit slimmer. have you ever had this problem or heard of anyone complaining about the recorder bulging?
a lot of grooms are wearing more fitted jackets and pants so whether i put it in their inside jacket pockets or pants pockets it sometimes happens. not all the time, but sometimes. i tested it out on myself and it felt kinda bulky too. i hate having my grooms feel uncomfortable. if you have one thats a bit overweight it shows more also.
ive purchased a clip from amazon, i actually never tried to use it for ceremony stuff though. i just pictured it being the same thing. its weird to explain but when grooms have put it in their back pocket their jacket kinda flips up and i imagine it doing the same if it was clipped on the back of their pants. like i said, its not 100% of the time, maybe 10% if anything but im just thinking of going with a slimmer recorder to avoid that all together
I agree that the H1 is just too bulky for today's slim fitting suits that most every groom is wearing. I ditched the H1 a few years ago for the Olympus DM-620 because it is half the width.
In my opinion it makes no sense to make a test between a wired kit and a wireless kit mounted to the same recorder other than testing out for interferences of the wireless kit. You can not gain quality with a wireless kit recording to the same recorder. You should rather compare the wired kit to a wireless kit with a better recorder and the same lav mic (like a Roland R44 or so) to see if it makes sense to take the risk of a wireless kit for the gain of quality.
Not the Bride, but you could do the podium for people giving readings, you could have one to record something like the quartet, sometimes there are 2 officiants, backup...number of different uses.

You are going ham on those uploads lately.
Love it!

Rosa Brazeal did you get just one and how did that turn out?
I just plug my smartlav+ directly into one of my old android phones and record there. Cheap, works great and very low profile.
We used 2 senheiser avx (officiant and groom) connected to a zoomh6 that is located in the back next to our equipment and also as a backup a dr40 conected to the main board or dj recording odb and -12db just in case. for first look groom has a zoom h1 with a smartlav
Nice videos. Hey Kraig, can you give us a tutorial about how to focus while using the slider, or other stabilizers?
I love the Smartlav+ I use two attached to two old iPhones (4s) and it always comes out nice. Great stuff. Keep it coming!
Kraig, I imported a Tascam DR-10CS. It's killer. I paired it with a countryman B3 and it works with the locking connector. It's also smaller than any other recorder I've found and records a backup track!

Would you recommend putting the recorder/ belt pack on their waist or the inside pocket of a suit jacket?
I have used the Shure MXL with the adapter with the Zoom H1 and works well for less than $200 for all of it so recommend it as another option for those on a tighter budget.

Can you do a tutorial on equalizing and perfecting audio in final cut x

Those are great but if you want to shoot with a slim camera its harder to use. Also the rodes are thick; one groom couldnt fit it in his pocket
Hi Kraig, i am using Zoom H6 with rode wireless mic kit and saramonic wireless mic kit together :D
Great tutorial. I was wondering why my Rode mic wasn't working with the H1. Now I know what adapter I need! :)
Same here.
this would be a much better test If the recorder wasn't something potentially limiting the mics, do you have a more expensive recorder to test these on? like a sound devices recorder?
I use the rode smart lav with the sc3 into a H1 sounds great
thank you for sharing some tips. it helps a lot.
I was wondering why you didn't include the Rodelink to compare with the other lav kits?
Question. IF you put one Smart Lav on the groom during the ceremony are you going to catch what the bride is saying clearly also?
Totes. I does it alls the times.
That is awesome! Thanks for responding. I have been binge watching your videos the past couple weeks. I just got a call tonight for my first ever paid wedding gig. So I really need to up my audio abilities soon. I am thinking of buying a zoom h5 and a zoom h1
Bro you are everywhere. Also good video.
Lol, same thing I thought.
Will one Zoom 1 and Smart Lav pick up good audio of the Bride, Groom and Officiant if it's in the Officiant's pocket ?
Thanks for another great video. Possible noob question but what are EQ effects and how do you use them? I guess its equalising but in practice what does that mean for your edit - how is it done and what is its effect. Does it just level out audio peaking or is there more to it? Thanks
with that setup do you have a interference with the phones signals?
I have a really random question: I've been using a glidecam and a7sii for filming and I'm wondering how to best maintain sharp focus. Do you use a follow focus system? Have a higher aperture? Peaking? Just naturally amazing at focusing?

You should do a video on lenses Kraig
How long does the zoom h1 batteries go recording continuously?
Hi, are you still record Board Audio?
Hi Kraig. what about rodelink filmaker kit? not using anymore?
I'm a new film maker... I have the Rode Smart Lav+ with the Zoom H1 setup and I think it gives me great quality and is truly bang for your buck. PS! I went with that setup based on your recommendation a year ago @Kraig

Couldn't agree more.
Who knows what kind of right angle adapter those are? Having trouble finding the right one for my Zoom H1

do you know any youtube tutorials for Post audio? i really want to learn how to post process the audio.. thanks
Hey, Mr. Loro. I will be working on a tutorial for that soon.
what right angle adapters are you using to connect your lav to your zoom h1?
Link to the foam? In the thumbnail?
Thanks for the info Kraig, subscribed to your channel.
Cheers, Pete
Thank you!
What about the rode link?
do you think the smartlav is also good with an Android smartphone?
It is great as well.
Kraig! HUGE QUESTION! Filming a wedding with A7sii as main can with canon glass, and second shooter using 5D Mkiii. HOW TO DO?! Wat settings?!
One wedding, I used a Canon 5D Mark II, Nikon D7000 and a Go Pro Hero 3 Black. I Color graded everything with Magic Bullet and got a fairly decent uniformed look. The B&G were happy with their video and that is all that matters to me! LOL!

I just got mine last week as well. I've been testing it and the input level is fantastic at around 60 in a quiet environment but it also depends where you'd be using the setup at.
Gabriel Ludwick 60-70 ive found works well. it does depend on how loud the talent is speaking and where you have the mic placed.
I've been even putting an H4n into pockets. H1 is great in comparison. I love the thing.
Damn. I never even considered putting the H4n in someone's pocket. Thats a lot of recorder haha.
Hello Sir
How are you?
i want a buy a edelkron slider. how many inches do i need?
please tel me.
18
hello Sir
can you help me for slider.i think you sent me audio recording tutorial .
+Satnam Singh Yes! Come to my channel and I can help you out.
ive been using H1s and a Roland R-05 for the past few years and lately ive had a few grooms say that the H1 is too bulky in their jacket or pants pockets because of the bulge on the top of the recorder. this was making me consider getting a couple of R-05s instead of the rest of my H1s since its a bit slimmer. have you ever had this problem or heard of anyone complaining about the recorder bulging?
Are the grooms wearing tight pants? Just wondering for myself because I am about to buy one.
a lot of grooms are wearing more fitted jackets and pants so whether i put it in their inside jacket pockets or pants pockets it sometimes happens. not all the time, but sometimes. i tested it out on myself and it felt kinda bulky too. i hate having my grooms feel uncomfortable. if you have one thats a bit overweight it shows more also.
+Austin Paz I wonder if there is a clip I can buy to screw into the try pod hole that will allow it to clip onto the back of his pants
ive purchased a clip from amazon, i actually never tried to use it for ceremony stuff though. i just pictured it being the same thing. its weird to explain but when grooms have put it in their back pocket their jacket kinda flips up and i imagine it doing the same if it was clipped on the back of their pants. like i said, its not 100% of the time, maybe 10% if anything but im just thinking of going with a slimmer recorder to avoid that all together
I agree that the H1 is just too bulky for today's slim fitting suits that most every groom is wearing. I ditched the H1 a few years ago for the Olympus DM-620 because it is half the width.
nice
What happen to the rodelink?
That is a great option also, but he was focusing more on wired systems.
And it will not get any interference as it uses a wifi signal, so perfect for weddings!
In my opinion it makes no sense to make a test between a wired kit and a wireless kit mounted to the same recorder other than testing out for interferences of the wireless kit. You can not gain quality with a wireless kit recording to the same recorder. You should rather compare the wired kit to a wireless kit with a better recorder and the same lav mic (like a Roland R44 or so) to see if it makes sense to take the risk of a wireless kit for the gain of quality.
smartlav sounds good
Indeed.
My question is who do you put 4 mics on? Bride, Groom, Officiant, and who else?
People giving toasts
That is still only 3 since toast and officiant are not at the same time.
Not the Bride, but you could do the podium for people giving readings, you could have one to record something like the quartet, sometimes there are 2 officiants, backup...number of different uses.
Back up your back ups
+Alec O'Grady put lavs on your lavs
Here is a link to a locking 1/8 adapter. www.pinknoise-systems.co.uk/sennheiser-cable-adaptor-35-locking-socket-to-35-right-angled-jack.html
H1 is too fucking bulky IMO.
Looking for a decent alternative myself.
Roman is using Olympus WS-812 but that's like $200+ so fuck that.
B3 & H1...haven't went wrong yet..
♡
Just a warning the smartlav is really fragile. I had one and it didn't even last a year
Couldn't agree more.
Can i get away with just one of these audio solutions in the grooms pocket?
There`s difference between "How to" and "Whit what to"

WOAH U REPLIED, IF I KNEW I WOULD OF SAID SOMETHING USEFUL! XD
