I was on this subway because my dad knew one of the staffers who gave us a private tour of the capitol. It was really weird being on it because it was like one of those small train rides at theme parks.

  • @cherylann9781

I had asked my Congressman to arrange a tour for my niece, her boys and I while we were Washington and he was gracious enough to arrange a private tour of the Capitol for us. We went to his office in the Rayburn Building, where one of his staffers was assigned to us. He took us through the underground walkways over to the Capitol, but on the way back he put us on the Subway itself! We weren't allowed to take pictures while we were there, but what a thrill!

New Zealand has a similar system at Parliament in Wellington - there is a pedestrian tunnel from the MPs offices in Bowen House, under Bowen Street, to the Executive Wing (Beehive). Then there is a covered walkway from the Executive Wing which leads into the foyer (a.k.a media ambush point) in Parliament House.

1981 age 15-16 ..While visiting DC on a class trip with very little supervision I went to the Capitol and got the "tour" . After hearing that representatives take an underground commuter trains I decided to see if I could check it out. I don't remember how I actually made my way down into the tunnels but I was down there walking along side the tracks on a very well lit wide walkway. It kept going and going.. I passed by an open office and there were two gentlemen attending to what had to be the largest shortwave radio I'd ever seen. I started getting nervous about getting in trouble and was starting to look for a way back up .. looking for any stairway etc. I'd been down there walking around for some time when I finally found a stairwell back up and I went down a dark narrow corridor. I dont remember seeing any artifacts or anything but I happened to come up into the basement of one of the Smithsonian buildings. Natural History. I got back outside and was completely confused as to where I was. I hadn't figured it was the Smithsonian yet. I saw the Washington monument and walked as quickly as possible back to the school buses waiting on me and another student to return. The other student was much later than me so I didn't get in trouble. Thinking back.. it was sad I just couldn't relate to many other students. I didnt have ANY friends with me ? Sad BUT I think I wud have gotten in trouble or forced to go back up into the Capitol with a group of kids. By being all alone I was naturally stealthy. I wonder what the two doods operating the short wave were actually doing with that thing. They both looked right at me ... I thought I was about to get into trouble lol. DC is crazy full of secrets. I believe. I wonder if u can get down there now days. I doubt it especially after Jan 6.

In my opinion, it makes sense from a perspective of efficiency and security. There's also the fact that DC can have the occasionally very nasty snowstorm, and the city does NOT handle it well; a few inches of snow will literally shut down the city. This lets the lawmakers get back and forth, regardless of weather, and avoid security concerns on the streets. It also makes it easier for those with disabilities or temporary illness. Given that this system is fully electrified and small-scale, it's also relatively cheap to operate in relation to its value. This is actually a rare case of something that, once you analyze it, is not at all wasteful. This makes sense and is actually a good idea.

There's a tunnel in Nashville as well that connects the state house to legaslative plaza across the street, runs under Charlotte Pike. Legaslative plaza looks really nice at street level, its a marble plaza with fountains, the war Memorial auditorium, but underneath its a damp, moldy, smelly poorly lit basement where our state reps and senators have their offices. Basically serves the same function as the tunnels/subways in DC, turns our state congressmen into vampires and mole people so they can go to their windowless office to the windowless house/senate chambers without seeing the light of day.

been on this many times as im 15 love trains and happen to have my dad as a retired congressman but when i was younger he worked there so while he was doing other stuff me and my twin we riding the trains under the capitol: yes the system is extremely usefull, and fun, now whenever I go with my dad to D.C i take a chance to ride that subway and when I tell people theres a subway under the US capitol they unknowingly assume the"obvios" the D.C metrorail which now has new trains and is revived! so if youre ever there and have the chance ride it (you have to be on a tour or know someone who will take you there are security gaurds at each station who only let you ride if they see either youre badge or simply know you for example i took the train so many times it got to the point where i could ride it by myself as long as my dad was somewhere in the building doing lawy things

Great video overall, just one thing that stood out.
“Congress literally runs the government.” That is not an accurate statement.
Congress writes laws, provide oversight and confirm nominees. They do not actually run the government, the Executive branch, headed by the president, actually runs the government. In fact, they are the government.
So the president and the executive branch are the government and therefore run the country. Congress is there to pass laws and provide oversight, as well as confirm cabinet secretaries to office, judicial appointments, etc.

Oh, and you forgot to mention that the WMATA Metro not only breaks down and catches on fire, but has a functioning escalator rate of 10% normally, but 90% if the budget permits repairs before the inauguration.
How would I know this? In 2013 my troop took our first trip to Washington. The Metro escalators were kinda eh. In 2017 when I came back a few months after the inauguration they were all working. Also at that time, the National Mall was being reseeded.
What's more incredible was that during my 2013 trip, we were on tour with one of the reps from Massachusetts, and we used the walking tunnels between the Capitol and his office. Also on that day, it was the Boston Marathon back at home... so I'm in his office watching the TV just after the marathon bombers strike... at home... but I don't live in Boston or anywhere on route 9 so not exactly "home" but 30-180 minutes away (traffic/snow dependent)
And a few days later, we meet with Elizabeth Warren because she wanted to meet with people from her state, and because our state was just struck by terrorists. She doesn't represent my ideas, but she's pretty cool and that's how I met Elizabeth Warren. I also bumped into Paul Ryan before he became speaker of the house. He was running to vote up the back steps of the Capitol; opted not to take the not so secret subway.

You actually can get access to ride it pretty easily if you know someone who works in the Capital. I was just friends with some interns there and was even able to ride it. Sat next to Senator John McCain. Cool ride sitting there having no idea what to say.
Now I don't know if you are suppose to be able to ride it this easily, but you might as well ask and see if you are there anytime in the future

When I was in D.C. I was with a organization that helped us set up interviews with Congressmen and when I went to meet a Congressmen they said the Representative I was to see was not here but they took me down the tunnels that are used by them and you needed special clearance just to walk into them and they gave me that and after I went to where he was I ended up standing just feet away from where the House of Representatives meets and I could see hundreds of Representatives. It was a surreal experience in which I got to go to a place where even news networks can't go.
