- VIENNA CHRISTMAS MARKETS - For this Vlogmas episode, I visited two Christmas markets in Vienna: Spittelberg and Rathausplatz. I had intended to visit more this night - there are a lot! - but the market at the Rathaus was so incredible and overwhelming that I didn’t want to leave.
When I asked my Austrian friends, who live in Vienna, which Christmas Market I should visit they unanimously said Spittelberg. It’s more local, with fewer tourists, and its charmingly nestled into tiny little streets that you wander through. It felt cute and intimate and I liked the smaller scale. There were food vendors but I noticed more stalls selling nice crafts and gifts than anywhere else I’ve been. It seemed like a place with unique items where you’d actually shop. I even met Santa Claus! When I told him I’d been good this year he rewarded me with a clementine and peanuts.
Next I went to the enormously grand market in front of the Rathaus or, in English, City Hall. It made me feel giddy when we first arrived because there were so many lights, people, decorations, and good smells wafting through the air. The whole atmosphere felt like Christmas in hyperdrive! Definitely what a Christmas market looks like when you picture it in your head, I think. It really delivered. I found booths of cute Vienna-inspired Christmas decor, a sausage in a bun that turned out to be filled with cheese, and a mug of traditional Glühwein or mulled wine. There was a Ferris wheel, light shows, and a large track for people to skate through the brightly-lit trees.
I thought I’d wander around more markets but, in truth, I had so much fun at the Rathaus Christmas Market that I didn’t want to leave. What did you think of this crazy Christmas market in Vienna? Do you prefer quiet and quaint Spittelberg or bright and bustling Rathausplatz?

Which of these markets did you vibe the most? The first or second one?
I have to admit, as much as I like small friendly markets, the big one at the Rathausplatz got me the most excited!
I always go for the smaller local areas, I dont like to travel somewhere just to see other tourists, although the big one was very beautiful too. Loved your excitement , always so bubbly and giggly !
Hard choice but probably the second :)
I don't know if I can pick - the Spittelberg one has such a nice local feel and I like the crafts better. But the Rathaus market is just magical! Did you get a chance to see the market at Karlsplatz? That one had a lot of fun stuff for the kids in the middle that we enjoyed watching.
I loved them both... each one was different but the spirit of Christmas was there in the little village as much as the bigger village.

I have visited Vienna a few times and always at Christmas. It is a very pretty place, but my visit this year will be a little bit different. I will be there New year's Eve. Its going to be magic....I love this video...
My husband and I went to Vienna last year, especially to see the Christmas markets. I had always dreamed of it. Thank you SO much for bringing back memories. The Rathaus in Vienna is just spectacular. We rode the ferris wheel and I felt like a 45 year old kid!! And for those of you who question going, just bundle up and GO!!! Vienna = actual chandeliers hanging between buildings outside in the old town too at Christmas. Spectacular is just THE word for this city in general, but at Christmas, you are right, it's pure magic. Thanks for the video - as always, excellent job!

My adult daughter and I are going on the Danube Christmas River Cruise from Budapest, to Vienna, Nuremberg, and Regensburg, then spending 3 days on land in Prague. There are around 30 Christmas markets in Vienna. The one at the Rathaus Platz is the biggest one and probably has the most tourists but some find it ‚tacky’ - not the Austrians favourite. The markets at Schönbrunn Palace, Maria Theresienplatz, Belvedere Palace and Spittelberg are in my opinion far nicer.
The cheese filled sausage (Käsekrainer) is delicious by the way!

I cried because it was so beautiful! It made me think of my blessed mother, who is now in Heaven, and her beautiful sister and my precious grandmother who is also in Heaven. Eileen! I am soooooooooooooooo jealous!!! I loved loved LOVED this video. I have actually loved all your Christmas (Vlogmas) videos so very much but this one takes the cake. I have dreamed of going to a Christmas market for at least 15 years and you are living my dream - thank you for bringing your experiences to us! The Rathaus market is off the charts!! I am definitely making this happen someday, no doubt now. It looked just magical - I fell in love with the ice rink that looked more like a path or trail than a rink, loved the beautifully lit Rathaus and the ferris wheel and the cute crafts and ornaments that you can buy there. When you said this was the place your Christmas Market dreams were made of, I couldn't relate more! I can't say enough how much I have loved how you're spending December in Europe - it's the best possible way to spend it - going from city to city seeing their Christmas markets and seeing how they bring their own flair to it. Krampus, etc. How much longer are you in Europe? Are you going home for Christmas? Even if this was the last Vlogmas you did, I would be happy because you did the most awesome market and shared it with us. In 2011, we went to Christkindlmarket in Chicago (which was magical but probably but a fraction of the ones in Europe) but I absolutely loved it and it made me want to go to Europe to experience the real thing. Before this month, had you ever been to any Christmas markets, in Europe or otherwise?

Definitely gets you in the spirit! I did an exchange in Germany when I was younger so I'd been to Christmas markets then and felt the magic of them :) I'd also been in Toronto and Chicago - I think that's all. It's been so nice to see how they're similar and unique in their own ways. Each one - even in the same city - has a different personality and vibe. We are indeed heading home for Christmas, which will be lovely, but Vlogmas will continue right up to Christmas Day! I think you'll enjoy the next ones too!

Elieen, you have to visit SCHONBRUNN PALACE Christmas Market next time you come here! I am English living in Vienna since September 2017, and I can verify what Elieen has said about the magical 'almost fairyland' atmosphere to be found at the Christmas Markets in Vienna. Vienna holds at least '20' Christmas Markets within it's city and some of them start today (17th November), but most begin on 23rd November and run up until Christmas Day, so if you are thinking of travelling to Vienna, book for as many days as possible so that you can visit as many Christmas Markets as you can. They all have beautiful backdrops - many are held in various beautiful Palace Grounds or in front of architecturely stunning Museum buildings etc., etc.,

It certainly was! Vienna gets all 'dressed up' for Christmas and the city just glistens and sparkles. A wonderful place to be at Christmastime. I've been in warmer weather, too, and also loved it. Just a beautiful city :) Hope you enjoyed it!

My Europe ancestry is mostly Austrian, feel inherited alot from 1580s emigrants minus their Protestant religion. Also had a sweet dog named Clementine. Hi Luis, the Christmas markets finish on 24 December. But there will be a ‚New Year‘s market‘ at Schönbrunn Palace and at the Michaelaplatz from 27.Dec. to 1 Jan. You will still see the Christmas street lighting/decorations as they’re switched on every day until 6 Jan.

"the stuff that Christmas dreams are made out of" is exactly the best description of the Christmas markets in Vienna!! We were there a few months ago just before Christmas and it was just magical. Great video!

Very nice and informative video about the Christmas Markets in Vienna. By the way, I am planning to visit Vienna next December for the Christmas Markets and I'd like to stay near the biggest Christmas Market near the City Hall (Rathausplatz) It is possible from the Rathausplatz to visit the other Christmas Markets by walk? I've heard there are 25 Christmas Markets in Vienna. Thanks a lot. Benny from Malta
You could definitely visit some of the bigger ones by walk from there. Stephansplatz, Altes AKH, Karlsplatz are all close to the city center. For Spittelberg or Schönbrunn you can just take the subway :) It is not that expensive in Vienna!

Yes, Benny, the delightful Christmas Market held at 'The Museum Quarter' is just a stones throw away from the Rat Haus. If you go in the late afternoon, you will then be able to also enjoy viewing the stunning architechture outside two of Vienna's greatest museums. One is a History museum and the other is an Art Museum. Also you will see a wonderful statue of Empress Marie Therese right in the middle of the museum gardens. I would then go on to the Rat Haus Christmas Market after this one so that the Rat Haus atmosphere will be even more amazing where you will come face to face with an onslaught of ice (*Ice Rink) and secret fairyland paths of magical dazzling lights.
