    The corruption on the reserves is shameful! The First Nations needs to clean up their messes themselves and stop blaming others and living in the past. Handing out money never works...when will our provincial and federal governments stop the handouts and demand accountability?

    the first nation band leaders that live high on the hog in places like Toronto...Vancouver..Ottawa... get all the money that the Gov gives for the people. It is disgusting...they let their own people starve and live in poverty while they live in luxury. it is a real problem. I know because my Parents lived beside a band member in Ottawa and his 700,000 dollar home was paid for by the council and he bragged about it a lot. They should all be prosecuted for that to the full extent of the law!! I worked for the Debeers diamond mine for 3 years and it was on Native land near Attawapiskat and the money that the Band got was huge...MILLIONS and do you think the people of Attawapiskat got any to improve their reserve, NO it all went to the band leaders in far away places.They could care less about their people = GREED. You can blame the government all you want but their chiefs and leaders are just as responsible for the problem.The chief of attawapiskat at that time 2008 (I CANNOT RECALL HER NAME) was embezzling money from the tribe...she was accused and questioned of where money was going but I dont know if she was ever found guilty or charged? SAD SAD SAD. I worked with a native dude at that mine (very nice guy) and he was saving all his paychecks to start a new life off that reserve...he told me horror stories...I hope he made it.

    It may be hard to move from a place that can't provide you enough fuel to make it to the next town, and even if the fuel was avaialble you would have to traverse a road that is only available in the winter months due to the majority of it it comprising of ice crossings. I have no desire to argue, I am just merely trying to shed light to some possibly valid points to consider.

    today the royal proclamation of 1763 in british and Canadian law is the historical treaty process. Through that legal process land could be transferred from first nations to go to the crown in return for specific entitlements and benefits.
    under Canadian law, unceded land, ie land that has never been transferred to the federal government does not legally belong to the Canadian government.

    What the hell happened to the $93 000 000? The natives keep saying that we do nothing for them, and yet one community can blow that kind of money and the rest of Canada has no right to demand answers! And there are many other native communities wasting similar amounts, you can be sure.

    the royal proclamation of 1763 clearly recognized Aboriginal People as Nations, and acknowledged Indian title to their lands. It recognized First Nations people as rightful occupiers of their hunting grounds until such times as these were ceded to the government authority through negotiation with the crown.
    the lands you occupy we gave away, the lands we hunt and fish on we never gave away...as it says to this day in exchange.

    Also say that "$34 million" is "tax free" strikes me as a red herring. I found the figure and breakdown shows that it's monies transferred to the band from various govenrment agencies. Last I checked the feds didn't tax the provinces and municipalities that on the monies they either raised or got from the feds..nor did the provinces do that to municipalities. I could understand the point about taxing individuals on reserves, but taxing the band govenrment itself?

    And I do not know about this Harper Government where he gets his ideas from, if he wants to use the argument Canada is not brittish that its on his own, that it can do however it feels to Natives the taking of Native lands. According to history this was the last chapter as how history was made and recorded.
    There was no Custer, no war with the Natives in Canada, aside from the French Allies.
    And how can anyone say Natives are not entitled to land, when not even Canada won the war against Native

  • @Petrophski
    @Petrophski 12 лет назад

    People love to stereotype & say that the Native people are their own problem, that they don't want to work. They say the solution to these peoples poverty is to get a job.THERE ARE NO JOBS IN ATTAWAPISKAT!! it's a desolate waistland with no employment opportunites! It's such a convoluted situation, I think a potential resolution would be to relocate this reserve to a plot of land closer to more established communites where these people would be given the opportunity to at least try and sucseed.

  • @TheMuskokaman
    @TheMuskokaman 11 лет назад

    Agreed! I never called for anyone to leave! I only seek equality for all peoples not just one group or other. Personally I wouldn't recognize someones hereditary chiefdom unless they proved themselves to me as worthy of being a leader I feel the same about aristocracies as well. Their blood ain't no bluer than mine or yours & if anything is to be learned from the 20th century it is that greed is still in many men's hearts regardless of their creed or ethnicity making them "cold" & bereft of love

  • @316bluethunder
    @316bluethunder 11 лет назад

    it also states not to bother or molest depends on what terms you would literally use that term on the settlers. As well as the settlers they were given the same conditions that apply to them to also apply to Natives.
    when that piece of paper was signed and that Land in question meant the whole of Canada on the Lands you occupy.
    The lands that was entitled to us as it states to practice our traditional way of life of hunting and gathering, those lands remain with us to this day its not surrender

    Much bitterness & vanity I hear from a people once justly proud! Today's renditions are a "pale" comparison of yesteryear & those honourable leaders of old. I feel for those whose culture was uprooted yet it is the 21st century & if you do not move with the herd you will be left behind to become prey for the carnivores of the world like Tobacco & Alcohol industry & other such parasitical capitalist ventures. The first nations needs to put a strong emphasis on their future if they are to survive!

  • @AdamTheC
    @AdamTheC 12 лет назад

    Again look up the article whose title I provided. If You Tube allowed me to provide links I would. It points out that merely $34 million a year may not be sufficient given the chronic housing problems and the fact that services are entirely provided through the feds. Though the actual amount of funding from the federal government annually is more like $18 million. As for the $11 million in salaries where did you hear this? Just give me the name of the article or source.

    Hundreds of attawapaskats all across canada.. I see we live like we do and american reservations have mcdonalds and concrete roads with streetlights and plumbing and running water and walmarts and malls and casinos.. we still only get 4 dollers a year they can change the agreements. But if they do alot would change and it would take away from our rights. That's why it's not easy to change the treatys and resign a new thing. They would take the last of what we have. But they could also give us more

  • @TheMuskokaman
    @TheMuskokaman 11 лет назад

    That is the case! Yes it did happen! Yes the white man conquered our forefathers! If they didn't the natives would run the country today which they certainly do not! The sooner natives stop crying about the past & start working for their future the better they will be. The world has changed & we must change with it or be left behind as nothing more than a memory!The old ways are gone forever, as much as I wish they weren't & if our children are to flourish we must adopt the ways of the white man

    Since You Tube won't let me post links in the comments, run a search for "The real math behind Attawapiskat’s $90 million" + "National Post". It details how the moneys for the reserve are inadequate and how spending under the Indian Act is tightly controlled by Aboriginal Affairs, which is far from an efficient and responsive bureaucracy.
    Plus, a Federal Court ruled that the decision to place the reserve under third party management was unjustified.

  • @AdamTheC
    @AdamTheC 12 лет назад

    Of course this isn't even getting into the fact that the various tax exemptions for reserves was to avoid Bands losing use of their property on reserves through taxation. Though considering how poorly Canada has upheld it's end of the treaties as well as deprived First Nations of their land through various dodgy means - plunging them into poverty - I find Canadians kvetching about people on reserves not paying taxes to be like rich people complaining about luxury taxes.

    I know little about native requirements for being a chief but what are their requirements? Does one have to be a full status native or what? Theresa Spence doesn't look very "native" to me and her live-in partner even less so. Do they have any educational background that gets them the right to be chief or is it just a popular vote? Just curious.

    The assumption of corruption - without something more - only works in this case if you assume a.) the funds were sufficient, which they weren't, and b.) the band government has complete control over spending, which isn't the case.
    Oh, and Chief Spence has long since entered into a hunger strike over the government's behaviour. Totally the actions of someone who is corrupt.

    I think the reason that the elders Attawapiskat Start construction of the houses before the government money came was because this community was in desperate need of better housing and they could not wait for the federal government money to come. I think the community leadership is partially at fault however this is due to systemic issues that this community faces. This community has to deal with inadequate housing,, a high suicide rate, poverty and lack of trust by the federal government.

    In this video is also they also lack like bad leadership is only an issue that affects aboriginal communities.There can be bad leaders in any community however when these leaders are in aboriginal community they get a lot more attention. I think this society of the racial bias that many people still have towards aboriginal people.

  • @briansempowski189

    I think is unfair that this field was harsher on the average of community that they are the government. The Canadian government has mistreated aboriginal communities for centuries But I think is the least they can do to provide good safe housing. It is unfair It's unfair that a community in Canada has to face Third World level conditions. We care strongly about poor communities around the world however we have ignored this community.

    Chief Spence fought really hard for her people, she was the best chief we've had, she had a bad relationship with INAC and Ministers because they were making them look bad in the media from the truth, I believe they wanted to punish her for that which ended up all of us being punished for it, all because she was speaking out and she really wanted them to honour our treaties.. I wish she was our chief again unlike the corruption that we have today.
