The thing about the Beatles, being 72 myself, is being around at the time and witnessing their impact on the world culture in real time on a daily basis, they really changed music and culture itself big time and the world fought it every step of the way! It was truly a feat to behold and witness. Young folks can watch the old videos, listen to the music etc, but never capture and truly understand the Beatles and how they totally changed the world on a global stage.

There were a few reverse reaction takes. Images that were reversed giving the individuals on screen a dismissive expression to what is occurring in the scene. I’m stunned that after all this time the film can be properly colortimed. The luminance is outstanding. The blacks are not crushed and look great. There are instances that appear to be chromatic lens aberrations but there is just something about those moments that leads me to believe it’s due to certain colors fading more than others and the amazing job done to get those colors back comes with a price. We’ve all heard this audio before but not like this. Im floored at the amount of work that Wingnut has done to bring that crappy Nagra up to todays cutting edge standards. I honestly thought that would be impossible.
I did notice the sync issue you mentioned and I do think it is a necessary evil required to keep a nice flow with the narrative. So establishing group shots may not be the moment these things are said but serve the film as the cut closer to 2 shots and singles. I’ve worked with Tony Richmond and I’m just floored by what he witnessed and captured during this period. I’ve always had the utmost respect for his work and seeing this footage just puts his work in a genius class all its own.

    Best two moments:
    1. When Paul and George are just jamming and you can hear Paul coming up with what will become "Get Back." You see the kernel abs creation of a number 1 hit.
    2. While the others are talking about places to play, Paul is over at the piano coming up with the chords to "Let It Be" and no one notices. Again, the kernel of a bit song comes just like that.

Saw part 1 tonight (unable to see it yesterday due to Thanksgiving commitments) and I am very glad to see that it has much more balance than the trailers with all of the jump cuts that picked out the goofiest bits - I am glad those bits are shown but frankly glad that Peter Jackson did appear to preserve the truth of the interactions, definitely goofy and definitely contentious. I am catching the overriding mood of wanting to leave the "Beatles phase" behind - they were all still in their 20s and were each so creative and wanted to now explore that. It feels like the enmity around Allen Klein was already primed by wanting to go beyond being summed up as a Beatle. I am 65 and was around for all of it starting with their appearance on Ed Sullivan in 1964 when I was age 7. I am gobsmacked at how Peter Jackson has resurrected their late orbit, and what it felt to have these four as part of daily life. I am overjoyed to be brought into the studio and into their creative process afresh.

For those who predicted - prematurely - that Jackson’s Get Back would be a whitewash and would primarily feature only the sunny, joyful moments, well, you were wrong. I write this after watching the first 2 episodes. This film shows the band at times happy and enthusiastic, alternately disorganized followed by bursts of creativity and incredible musicality. At times funny, other times deadly serious. Fondly reflective and other times frustrated and angry. I wasn’t prepared for the strong emotions, border lining on tears at a certain point. This will require multiple viewings to capture everything.

Part 3 has a very effective audio trick that had me crying my eyes out seconds after the rooftop session began. Throughout the project the audio, while remarkably clean has been limited. That is to say there is a definite cut off to the highs and lows. This limitation just disappears the moment they perform Get Back on the rooftop. My infrasonic subwoofer kicked in. The back channels opened up and it was truly a cathartic moment. The magic of them performing at their best when their back is against the wall is happening right before you. I broke down at that moment.

Hey! Glad to see you're back! I guess I'll weigh in on how I feel about Get Back so far. Personally, I am really enjoying the doc (I've watched parts 1 and most of part 2 as of now). I can agree that their humor definitely shines through and I've busted out laughing a good couple of times lol. But I totally see where you're coming from when you mention the lip sync issues with the video for some scenes, and it not quite matching up. In my opinion though, I can look past the issue as I'm more focused on the actual dialogue and narrative, not to mention just admiring the beautifully restored footage, than I am worried about it sometimes not looking quite right, if that makes sense. With that being said, I'll give them a pass because I'm sure Peter and his team tried their hardest to make sure as many scenes as possible could be synced completely, but of course this isn't always the case. Another thing I like is how it does appear to be quite balanced in terms of having bad, tension filled moments, and happy, goofy moments. The doc isn't bumming me out, but it also isn't painting a fairy tale picture of the band. (ex: one moment they're jamming together in funny accents, and another moment we get an intimate discussion at lunchtime between Paul and John about George's departure). I'm also quite invested in the story within the doc, which is funny because well, we all know what happens in the end lol. So I have to hand it to Peter/ the editors for putting together a compelling and captivating doc that leaves me wanting more. All in all though, I am NOT disappointed so far, and I'll be watching part 3 tomorrow! I have to say, I think this was definitely worth the wait.

    Welcome back :)
The "lip sync" thing is addressed at the beginning of each episode and you show the slide yourself. "Scenes that contain audio only etc". I understand that the footage is not ever going to match the recorded dialog. So it works like a "dubbed into English" movie. If the camera's were rolling for a few hours a day, there would be plenty of footage to accompany to hours of recorded dialogue.

Clearly, I felt they rushed into this in January 1969 with not enough thought about the setting or the agenda. That may have been partially because of the director and partially because they couldn't decide between themselves what would be best. What I see is a director who has a limited vision who thinks they have to be planted in a grand location for impact, when he can't see the band is all the impact he needs. He constantly needles them to go to Libya, which is completely pretentious and way to expensive, not to mention a logistic and technical nightmare. They needed a director to step back from grand designs and place them in a place they felt the most comfortable and creative. A place where they felt like themselves, and not rushed, cajoled, and stressed out. That's what part one is all about, that and trying to accept everyone's changes and direction in music and life. George left for a good reason. He was bursting with his own creative direction and in rehearsal he felt snubbed and degraded. Paul, on his part, was just trying to get the sound he was looking for, and he came off as bossy. It was a lousy setting that was not conducive to creativity. Luckily, things changed on part 2.

Nice to see you posting again! I also noticed lip sync issues but it's minor problem. Great overall sound and picture. What struck me about the first episode was 1) how George arrived with a bad attitude and lack of confidence (that is gone by 3rd episode) and was difficult for John and Paul to work with (even more evident here than in original Let It Be), and 2) how Michael Lindsay-Hogg kept badgering Ringo about Tripoli, etc. Not sure if end of E1 or start of E2 where he and the Magic Christian movie director start pushing the AWFUL idea of the QEII - I think it was George, maybe, who quite rightly says that he doesn't want to be trapped for 2 weeks on a boat with a shipload of rabid Beatles fans - can you imagine?

In part 3 there's out of focus material left in. This was all blown up from 16mm to 35mm and digitally reprocessed to be HD, so a lot of visual information is blown up far more than would usually be done. Jackson did the best job he could, and he reprocessed all the mono camera sound to multitrack stereo. I hear what you're saying about the lip sync and all, but it's much better than it ever could have been before. Also, it's a documentary, so I don't mind it being rough around the edges. BTW my hot take is that you can skip parts one and two which are depressing and just watch part 3, which has everything from the first two in it but better.

    • @jpollackauthor
      @jpollackauthor 2 года назад

16mm and 35mm are both natively HD. 35mm is actually super HD and what you see in a theater is usually scaled down - this is why 4K UHD editions of old movies are possible. The weird murky look of this film is 100% caused by Jackson using a digital grain remover (16mm and even some 35mm film stocks are very grainy) and then using a digitally placed artificial grain layer of the footage, ostensibly to make the image look sharper and more natural after the grain remover has softened lines and removed detail - sadly it doesn't work. I'm also pretty sure Jackson used AI to sharpen faces when he's digitally zoomed in too far on a shot or used an out of focus shot. For a project that took nearly half a decade, the results are surprisingly sloppy.

I do wish they'd used stills or even just some kind of botification when it was audio only instead of trying to blend it with other footage because it'll end up with people ascribing intent to lines because of visual cues from looks on faces etc when it wasn't footage that was really connected to that conversation.

Really enjoyed it so far - one thing that I guess everyone has noticed; in that 10 minute intro, the introduction of Ringo to the band is out of chronological order. Basic error! Seeing Paul making the band persevere with Maxwell’s Silver Hammer is a bit embarrassing, knowing how much the rest of the band hated the song. And seeing Yoko take the mic and start smiling and screeching at the end of the day that George leaves is just plain obnoxious- her self-belief and importance knows no bounds. Apologies for stating the obvious:
When the audio track is saying something (for instance, George having a moan) DON'T SHOW George with his lips not moving - or his lips moving but obviously saying something else entirely.
Peter Jackson is trying, sometimes, to show us a scene for which he has no visuals, only audio.
The Get Back film is great - but often it's a bit clunky, visually; some brief parts are akin to a badly dubbed Italian Spaghetti Western.
This has happened because they had a lot more audio than they had visual material to play with. But they wanted to create a new thing, a new story film, distinct from the original Get Back film. Hence digitally engineered 'cropped' close-ups that were never intended by the original cinematographers; two-shot talking heads conversations that were never filmed; jarring mismatches between one shot and another, or between sound and vision generally, etc etc.

I have a question for the Fans
Do you think it is a little sad that the band could not kept it together just a little longer to do a tv special it could’ve just been in an old theater or television studio the way they did all you need is love or did you think the rooftop concert what is the best place to leave their last live performance please leave your thoughts here thanks and remember all you need is love 😎🇺🇸

Brought back just how much fun they were as a group , , even the negative parts were bringing back things I was doing when I listened to my Beatle Albums Paul is the leader and he and John are amazing together . Ringo just funny and hitting those drums ... Got a whole different view of George . 1969 I had been listening for years , I just got furious at Mark David Chapman for killing John Lennon ... I got a view of their Ladies and they contributed a lot .

Lance, the group's music was paramount, of course. However, they had a radical reaction in the youth movement, as well. Their insouciance to their elders' world had a galvanizing effect on teen's perception. They also changed social styles of dress and culture. As they progressed, these four lads had a profound importance on music and society at large.

After finishing the series, my overall thoughts was that it was very good and I thoroughly enjoyed it but there are a few things I thought about it.
The main one is the effects they added to the footage, I don't care for it and think it hurts the quality of the visuals. There are some points, especially in Twickenham in some of the darker areas, where people look really waxy and unnatural. I wished they had kept enhancement to a minimum and kept the film as having its grain.
Another thing I though about it is that I feel the feature-length run time for each of the episodes was pretty long. I think it would have been better like Anthology where it's seven or eight 1-hour parts cause 3-hours is quite a long time.
I still enjoyed it despite the few negatives I have to say about it and will definitely buy any special edition they release of it.

I enjoyed it, but there were certainly choices made in the editing. There's too much editing. Too many unnecesary cutaways when somone was talking or playing. Way too many cover up shots and way way too many shots of trying to sync up dialogue with bits of unrelated video.
Basically, this was like watching 2 hours of the Lady Madonna video where the Beatles are singing and performing Hey Bulldog. Love Lady Madonna, but that's not what the Beatles are playing.
And how annoying was Michael Lindsay Hogg? No one ever listened to a word he said.

I think the main things I took from Episode 1 were:
How unprepared they were for such a significant challenge of writing, recording and performing a brand new album in 20 days!
The bands admission that Paul has been "boss" since Mr Epstein's death.
George being at times enthusiastic then negative, whilst Paul was trying to coral them to focus and get through. John and Ringo were just there...
Mentions of how they enjoyed the White Album.
    And Ringo was everyone's favourite.
Paul was significant in shaping Don't Let Me Down and Gimme Some Truth, it was also good to see input to lyrics and arrangements from the likes of Glyn Johns and Mal Evans to the likes of Let It Be and Long and Winding Road.
Mal being lyric note taker and copier...
Seeing the shaping of new songs like Get Back from Paul jamming himself and Ringo and George joining in.
Michael Lindsay Hogg knocking his head against a brick wall with his amphitheatre idea whilst Ringo and George were completely against it and Paul knew a foreign trip was out.
It's actually amazing they managed to create so many classic songs in the circumstances Let It Be, Get Back, Long and Winding Road and Don't Let Me Down. Although they were mainly all Paul's.
Then even more astonishingly, they took a short break and then recorded their swansong and masterpiece Abbey Road.

First takes from most of ep 1. It’s pretty clear Lindsey-Hogg somehow thought he knew the Beatles were breaking up in the near future (he actually says in part 1 it’s to be their last tv show, and Ringo says basically & rightly WTF man) and that colored his take. So sad he entirely missed the complex truth of the situation, and it’s great to know more now. (Tbh Lindsey-Hogg comes off very poorly, he’s super annoying, & even cloying.) Seems truly the worst thing that happened to the Beatles was Brian Epstein’s untimely death. Completely tragic. They needed management, and John was taking heroin at the time as we know. Paul steps up & unfortunately makes George super understandably annoyed. It bothered me that Yoko was always in the circle, yet not part of the group, that feels very weird, like an energy drain in any circle. But, she is very clearly not the main issue. The dynamics are so interesting… Omg, it’s all so long ago though.

This was such a missed opportunity for MLH. So sad he was too busy fanboying.
As Elliot Roberts says on his video, this completely changes how we see this period. Just providing context for each scene makes a huge difference.
Part 2 is exceptional and we get to see more of Paul losing himself on avant garde music! Among so many other things that yeah I think are spoilers, because the docuseries just keeps surprising.

    • @tuppot
      @tuppot 2 года назад

But sure, the editing is questionable at parts. Some bits are very fast paced to the point of being confusing and some are way too slow and could have been trimmed. I think embracing the lack of material during conversation would've led to better results than their attempts to mask it.

Finished Part 2 last night and I'm honestly a little disappointed. A lot of this series could have been left on the cutting room floor. It drags a lot. Also, the weird murky look of this film is 100% caused by Jackson using a digital grain remover (16mm and even some 35mm film stocks are very grainy) and then digitally placing an artificial grain layer over the footage, ostensibly to make the image look sharper and more natural after the grain remover has softened lines and removed detail - sadly it doesn't work, in my opinion. I'm also pretty sure Jackson used AI to sharpen faces when he's digitally zoomed in too far on a shot or used an out of focus shot. For a project that took nearly half a decade, the results are surprisingly sloppy. I understand the cameras weren't always running when the audio was, but instead of trying to force similar shots into slightly matching the audio, they should have just cut to B-roll footage - there was 52 hours of footage that went unused in this, so there should have been more than enough. Hoping Part 3 is better.

John Lennon was really not a good person, and at this point in the band’s history, he was not a very good songwriter or player. Paul McCartney is left to try and keep Lennon engaged, just so they can simply finish something. Lennon behaves like a bored, annoying 13 year old boy.
I don’t understand why John Lennon gets the credit he does and avoids the criticism he deserves. Or maybe I do understand it.

A lot of John’s problemat this point was not Yoko as some may think, He was strung out on heroin at the time and was probably damn lucky to even be able to wake up every day let alone have any kind of input. One thing I think we could have done without and this is my opinion, is Yoko’s miserable screeching.

I must interject that the reason that they made the Anthology was because George was broke at the time. He lost a lot of money with his movie company Handmade Films. The Beatles were helping to get him out of debt with releasing the Anthology. That’s probably why you see a lot of George’s commentary and input in the documentary. I would say they reached their objective on that one. It made a lot of money. I’ve read that Pete Best finally became a millionaire because of it. Neil Aspinall was key to that one. It aired on (ABC) National Television for “ALL” to see. Everything they do now is pure greed. No way am I subscribing to Disney + to see this. Disney!!!! Come on now! Cut me a break.
