I made a couple of St James Bay infills from the casting kits, not dovetailed. It was wild to use my hand cranked post drill to mill the bed on that block plane!
No. For the big ner just get the cheap ones. Once you find the shapes you like then you find a good company that makes those shapes. Around 70% of mine are cheap or garage sale finders. Only a few have I gotten new.
Very easily. Sharpen twist bits. To woodworking tolerances, maybe 😂 There is no lead screw. Those edges need to stay on the same conic plane and concentric with the center of the bit, plus reliefs, otherwise the edges don't do the same amount of work and the bit will be cutting oversize, with bad surface quality, and run hot. And be more suspectible to snapping. All this gets harder the smaller the drill. Freehand sharpening a 16mm bit is a pain. Freehand sharpening a 4mm bit is a curse. All you're doing by pulling it across a stone like that for more than a couple of strokes each side is ruining a bit.
Thanks for filling us in on all the details.
I've thought about making an infill-plane at some point. Maybe this is just the inspiration I needed. Thank you. 😃
This one is exciting, I think I ambeing filled with joy.
This is a fun watch. Thanks, James!
Nice! I have an infill kit that's been languishing in my shop for no less than 10 years. You've inspired me to take another look at it
I love St James Bay Tool Co. He's down the road from me so, that helps.
Great video love watching you work through these type of projects,it helps me approach projects with the right frame of mind.
i gotta hand it to ya, this is a very plane video.
That landed well
The guy that won the auction probably thinks he will never see his plane.
He hasn’t got it yet.
Amazing work, James! Beautiful looking plane! 😃
Looking forward to the next part!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Wow , that's a great series to watch 😊 , thanks.

Amazing stuff. Glad you brought up cost before I contacted.
Doing well James
Thanks for sharing.
1st Class Camera Work
Very nice! I'd love to see a vid on hand sharpening twist bits!
That pun at the end 😀
Very cool series.
I fill, you fill, we all like Infill
Tote-ally wicked
I got some Blue Dykem at Nicholson’s.
Yes! Red oak is king!
There is just something sexy about this style of plane....
Thanks for sharing that!
Nice, might pick me up one to make someday
Love plane making videos
Great as allways. Don´t see me doing anything similar in the forseeable future though.
2:40 for a few seconds I thought that was a piece of chocolate shaped like a lever cap 😅
do the plane kits from St. James also provide instructions and/or suggested infill designs?...
Kinda. It is more historical documentation on different ideas.
cool
Were did you get the plans for the wood parts and specific drilling points? Kit doesn't provide that.
No plans. I just Google image search and find the look I want
I'm curious to see how this one will come together. But I would like to know: it's there any advantage to infills, rather than a regular plane?
No advantage they just feel good!
And a plane the that has files inside is an x-file plane. True story
Or is that a plane that used to have files? LOL.
@@ianpearse4480 ahahah true
Is there any particular set of files you would recommend for a beginner? I know that I need files but I don’t know what specific ones I should get.

Is it still a “lever” cap if there’s no lever? 🧐
I have 2 similar kits from a different brand. No rough edges anywhere. Also no time to build them.
How do you order plane kits from them, web site doesn’t show anything on how too
He sells them on eBay. If you don't see what you want you can message him on eBay
You look like your chewing on bubble gum when woodworking 😂
Chewing on your tongue is the best way to focus!
Did you file the mouth to 45 degrees?
Bob
Not yet. That will be around the time I mount the wood fills
Maybe I’m getting this wrong… didn’t James also made an Air Plane? He has a thing for planes 😂
Yes. I Have. Lol.
How do you know that the oak is 500 years old?
It came out of a 500 year old barn in England.

Which can I have it is it? There are multiple.
There is only one Can I Have I Tool Sales group. The rest are for other communication
