    You guys are figuring out cruising life pretty fast. Anchoring in the Bahamas is many times a guess, that is why , if possible, dive the anchor and see what you are dealing with. If I know there may be some bad weather, I put out a second anchor. It may be a bit of a tangle in the morning but I am usually in the same spot. Also, lighting is a real concern, especially on cats due to the increased water surface area. It also does not need to directly hit you. I am on strike #3. The last two hit trees on land nearby but still came in thru antennas and then thru any items networked with the radios. Now I disconnect everything. Power, antennas, network cables. I use handheld electronics to monitor my position or communicate during storms and I have built a Faraday box to store any other electronics or removable displays. This is definitely a pain but I have not had to replace anything in the past 5 years even when boats right next to me were hit.
    I know on the first trip there is the excitement of seeing new things, the next island, the next bay, etc. But try not to be in a rush. Hang out in an area for a while. Explore deeply, not just the known path. It is a lifestyle, not a vacation. We spent a week in July in Foxtown one year over the Bahamian independence Day. Went to their town celebration, made some great friends and learned a lot. A memory that will be with me forever.
    Keep living the dream and making friends and memories.

    • @patrickandmichaela
      @patrickandmichaela  8 месяцев назад

      We are certainly learning by doing, which can be pretty brutal at times 😂 A lot of people talk about how to use a second anchor and we had to bust one out just recently! It really does help! Good to know about the lightning! We tossed our crucial electronics in the oven when the storm was passing by, just to make sure we had what we needed to get help if something happened lol
      We definitely tried to get over to the Abacos in a hurry! But just not enough time this season to see too much of the Bahamas. Will definitely be taking it slowly next season, and are planning on slowing down on the east coast this summer ❤ That memory in Foxtown sounds amazing, it is the kind of travel that really sticks with you for a lifetime ❤ Really appreciate you being here with us another week! 🎉⛵❤

    The excitement of surviving in a new way of living. Although we only see the glamours side of sand beaches, open water and carefree living there are so many hours of challenges I know you cannot show. Learning as you go, so much fun. LOL. Soon you will look back and laugh and say this is what makes us stronger. Time to jump on land and start exploring the places you go. Life is more than just bouncing on water and boat projects. Cheers

    Use one or two more wraps on the winches is a small tip. You risk putting too much load on the bolts between the winch and the self tailing on top. Not a showstopper (the winch will work. But it's annoying when the self tailing is just slipping. ;) Nice to see you're growing into the life onboard. Continuinue having fun, fair winds.

    • @patrickandmichaela
      @patrickandmichaela  8 месяцев назад

      @martiningemannbording8758 8 месяцев назад

      @patrickandmichaela The winching is actually a bit harder and more fiddly, but it saves the bolts between the selftailing and winch ;) you'll see when you maintain the winches :)

    I don't know how far behind your videos are from real time but you're doing an amazing job! Super impressed. Pro tip: a hookah diving system is a game changer for shallow diving i.e. the anchor, or cleaning the bottom or even spearfishing in some areas. A hookah diving system is just a battery powered air pump with a scuba hose and mouthpiece connected to it directly. No tank (in most cases). These are available commercially, or you can buy the parts and make your own, which is what I did. Much less money than full scuba. eBay has one with a backup tank and setup for two divers for $800 (I also have this one). Others for single divers to 20-30ft depth for as low as $200. Even works from a dinghy. Super handy and almost no setup time. Thanks for the videos. Keep up the good work.

    There's really nothing you can do about lightening so it's not worth worrying about it. The best you can do is toss your portable electronics into the oven until the storm passes. Cay is the Spanish spelling of Key and is pronounced the same way. Green Turtle Key. My boat is named "Cay Of Sea" because all notes in the key of C are natural.

    Another tip I just noticed while watching. I see you’ve got your isinglass up all the way around the cockpit so it’s sheltering you from the breeze. I know for my wife when she gets sea sick getting her face in the breeze helps, along with looking at the horizon, so might not hurt to maybe open one to slow some airflow in the cabin.

    • @patrickandmichaela
      @patrickandmichaela  8 месяцев назад

      I was thinking the same thing last time we were sailing! The wind certainly helps keep the seasickness at bay, and unless we are downwind sailing the cockpit is pretty protected.

    Great to see that seasickness didn't rear its ugly head this time and also that you got to enjoy the sail much more. It also seems like the experience is starting to kick in for you both and you're finding solutions to problems on the fly. As you know, life on a boat is one series of fixing problems, and judging buy what Patrick said at the end of the video I stand by one of my previous comments about buying a second sailboat, towing it behind you and using it for spares (and excess storage) 😂
    And laundry? Noob error surely? Thought you'd both learnt in the early days to wear minimal / no clothes as much as possible? Reduces the pressure on you to wash stuff, plus saves on laundry detergents which can pollute the sea (or costs a fortune if you get the ocean-friendly variety). I've got my fingers crossed for you both that the calamity revealed at the end of the video isn't something that comes with a massive repair bill!!

    • @patrickandmichaela
      @patrickandmichaela  8 месяцев назад

      Seasickness seems to come and go, but we are committed to figuring it out! It is definitely worth it if you have to buy a spare part to buy two. I think the saying goes "Two is one and one is none" 😅
      We honestly do pretty limited laundry, it is the bed sheets that get you 😂
      The repair will cost.... more than we would love but not enough that it will stop us. Will be sharing more of that shortly! Thank you so much for being here with us another week ❤😊⛵

      @@patrickandmichaela I guess as far as seasickness is concerned then I suppose all you can do is experiment with different ways of combatting it until you can find one or two solid solutions. Hopefully as you continue to gain stronger sea legs this will also help.
      Gutted for you about the cost for the fix you need. I look forward to seeing more on it with the next video. And no probs for being here 😎

    Starlink? Mobile-regional with the mobile-priority temporarily turned on? Or… thanks

    • @patrickandmichaela
      @patrickandmichaela  4 месяца назад +1

      Correct! We just use mobile-regional because we are often close enough to land where it still counts as not priority, but when we are crossing any more than 10 miles off shore we turn on the temporary priority data to make sure we keep our connection. Because the pricing works out the same as pre paying for the 250, we think it makes more sense this way. 🙂

    I am sure you guys will know but make sure you padlock your outboard motor and tender when going ashore, they are the most stolen items of the sailing community. Aussie Pete

    • @patrickandmichaela
      @patrickandmichaela  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes! We have a lock bar that goes over our outboard that covers the screws that keep it on. The second line we have from the dinghy is the steel lined rope that we lock to the dinghy! Would be such a bummer to get either of them taken, so we are always annoyingly diligent about keeping them secure :)
