    LYRICS:
    Verse 1
    A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing
    Our Helper He amidst the flood, of mortal ills prevailing
    For still our ancient foe, doth seek to work us woe
    His craft and pow’r are great, and armed with cruel hate
    On earth is not his equal
    Verse 2
    Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing
    Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing
    Dost ask who that may be, Christ Jesus, it is He
    Lord Sabaoth, His name, from age to age the same
    And He must win the battle
    Verse 3
    And though this world with devils filled, should threaten to undo us
    We will not fear for God hath willed, His truth to triumph through us
    The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him
    His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure
    One little word shall fell Him Verse
    4a
    That word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them abideth
    Verse 4b
    The Spirit and the gifts are ours, through Him Who with us sideth
    Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also
    The body they may kill, God’s truth abideth still
    His Kingdom is forever

    A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
    Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
    For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
    His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
    On earth is not his equal.
    Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;

    And He must win the battle.
    And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
    We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
    The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
    His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
    One little word shall fell him.
    That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
    The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
    Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;

    One of my most favorite hymns! So lyrically rich with just enough protest but a lot of biblical significance in resting in God. Masterpiece!
    I must be honest, I was surprised by the tune, but it has really grown on me. I think it is a great way to reintroduce these timeless, Spirit led hymns to my generation. Gen Z needs theology rich worship songs, not any of that "me centered" theology rapidly produced by Bethel, Elevation, and Maverick City.

    I was prepared to dislike this interpretation, but the lyrics were delivered straightforward and the music didn’t want to be the center. Thank you for publishing this!

    Excellent rendition, particularly that it was sung with all of the original words and no extras (that is, added choruses). My two criticisms are these: 1) the unnecessary and abrupt/poorly placed modulation that took the key from the high end of singable for the average person to unsingably high; and 2), the tempo should be ever so slightly slower (not much), and the pick-up note should be the end of the previous measure, not the & of beat 1 - doing it that way throws off the rhythm that so many people know and that has been sung for centuries. But still, this is by far the best and most singable recording of this hymn (or any hymn, for that matter) that I have found.

    • @KenStewart-fd1yq
      @KenStewart-fd1yq 2 месяца назад

      Great critique! I I do actually think the sudden modulation adds rather than detracts…it reminds us of the sudden and surprising inrush of Holy Spirit at Pentecost and all the little “Pentecosts” in our individual lives.

    • @georgebates7862
      @georgebates7862 Год назад +1

      I totally disagree! The lyrics make more sense when sung at this faster pace. When sung more slowly with extended pauses between lines I was sometimes left scratching my head as to how one line of lyrics was connected to the next. Don't get me wrong, the traditional hymn is great also, some of the most inspiring music ever composed. (And that's coming from an atheist!) But this unique take on the song is awe inspiring and everyone connected with it it should be congratulated.

  • @djmaur

    Often times music is arranged for performance and expression of musicians. There is no problem with that at all. I fondly remember an arrangement by Vaclav Nelhybel that was performed by my high school orchestra in which I played bass. However, if your worship team is everyone that is singing, not just those on stage need to feel a part of, if not the main part of the singing. Modify a hymn? Sure. Just remember that the grand and magnificent hymns are only led and sung boringly by boring people. For me, some majesty was lost in this arrangement. The instrumentation was great, and a more contemporary feeling is fine, but it kinda left me flat.
