- This is a video that reveals results of a recent "best episode" survey. It also includes some of my own opinions. It is the seventh video in a series.

In defense of the "van episode"....
Trey Parker and Matt Stone have said that their favorite South Park episodes are the ones where "boys are just boys". As you suggested at some point in this video, I think this applies to Kenny vs Spenny too. In many episodes where Kenny and Spenny go and do their separate things for too long, you feel like you're missing out because it's when they're together the real magic happens.
With that said, although it's far from my favorite episode (maybe top 5 in Season 1,), I think that the "the van"-episode is one of these "boys are just boys" episodes because the guys are just literally stuck together in an enclosed space for three days and forced to go at each other. Although, there are a lot of missed potential because how certain events unfold, their bickering and arguing throughout the episode is so endearing and dare I say wholesome that they more than make up for any loss in plot development. Whenever I want escapism and a sense of comfort, this is usually the episode I turn to.
Also isn't Spenny's long face when Kenny has a date with Kate one of the most precious moments ever? I mean, come on.
Completely agree with this analysis. Van is a B or B- in my mind. Even if their respective bits fall flat, seeing those guys interact in such an intimate space makes it a fantastic episode. I also think Kenny frying the battery is a funny and satisfying ending. It made the episode feel complete.
I’m glad I found some people that care about KvS to the same extent I do.

Who can is my personal favorite episode. It’s exactly what the show is without the bullshit. To humiliate and fuck with spenny. The competitions are just dressing to do that.

I think Best Concert is the best episode to start with. It perfectly depicts both characters, and shows that anything goes in the name of competition. I was also shocked to see it ranked so low!
I agree! Best concert was my favorite episode, by far. It also had my favorite "humiliation".

I cannot tell you how much I love your channel. I grew up in Toronto watching KvS and it, unlike most shows, just took over my mind. In a different video you mentioned how your videos are you getting all those thoughts and ideas out. I have to say even after all my thoughts and ideas you have opened me up to so much more! And that's only in the last 2 days. A resurgence of KvS love and a place for fans to come together (I actually joined the discord). I could claim I have walked by the (second) KvS house...but you, my friend, have a deep unending knowledge of this world and I can't get enough.

p.s. I only met Kenny once. In an alley on Queen Street West here in Toronto. Midday. He was with an obvious security guy and had just left breakfast. I asked if I could say hello. He said absolutely and I got to fanboy and gush over him for a few minutes, in an alley. Greatest guy ever.

I wanted to contribute to the survey but it was only posted for a couple of days and by the time I saw it it had closed. Definitely some contentious episodes here and some are just crazy placements. Convincing Woman has to be among the best of season 1 that doesn't get the recognition it deserves and I think parent is top tier as well. Gay Guys is far better than people give it credit for and Old People as you said has one of the funniest plans Kenny has ever concocted. Telling those old women that Spenny molested his disabled brother is one of my favorite jokes in the whole series and no one talks about it. Agree with Kids as well, such a great episode and Kenny telling the kids that Spenny stole the presents is just amazing. Octopus, Dump and Homeless are A tier as well. I could go on forever but I definitely disagree with many of the results. Love the video though and the effort you put into making these. Can't wait for the next one.
I agree with you on Convincing woman. It's a very funny episode that doesn't get much recognition. Kenny inviting Spenny's uncle to the cocktail party is so random and hilarious. I also love how their respective personas represent two completely different types of women ie. Kenny as the bitchy mean girl and Spenny as the typical feminist

I actually believe the order is right, mainly because I really love some of the eps that you found surprisingly highly ranked lol.
But the truth is, I think the difference between an A tier episode and an F tier episode here is negligible. There really are no outright terrible episodes. They're all great. It's more of a matter of *how* great.
This. I believe that through all the analysis he forgot, that a good amount of people watched the series for its very stupid and bold humour as in the baby episode and the blindfolded one
I think best rapper is completely underrated. It’s the only episode where one of Kenny’s diabolical plans fails and blows up in his face. It has entertaining moments and characters like Johnny crack. I find their stupid view on rap and rhyme hilarious, especially that lil Wayne as a pimp type character Kenny does at the beginning
Kenny's plans blowing up is definitely satisfying in the narrative of KvS, but the episode seems a little... overwrought to me. A lot of funny, goofy stuff but when it leans into the "plot" it can seem unbelievable. I also have a suspicion that they straight-up shot/edited the episode differently than others. But, I haven't had a long time to really research and meditate on that. I appreciate the comment!

I think the Christmas special is super slept on. The competition itself sucks, but it's the tertiary stuff that makes it great. Spenny finally gets his attempt to make a "family friendly" episode of KvS and his insistence he won't let Kenny's rewriting of A Christmas Carol upset him only to let the water boil over and destroy the set is something so special you cannot write it. Kenny just knew him that well. Also, Kenny showing up in full Zodiac Killer regalia literally posing like artwork of him in the Santa Claus segment was so out of left field it never gets old.
Strong agree on the first episode to show a friend not being imitate. I think beer is a good funny straightforward one. Crime or piss of more people are also really good and not too disgusting

Personally I would put the blindfold and bible episodes in the A- tier.
The blindfold edpside introduces Silencio, one of Kenny's best personas (and my favourite) and Spenny's annoyance then unknowing humiliation walking around in public is pretty well done IMO. Kenny is very tame in the first episodes, and to me this is the first one where the viewers get a better glimpse at who he is and how he approaches the competitions. It's a tamer episode for sure, but i think that's due to it being one of the first episodes so they didn't want to scare away potential viewers with the crazier stuff that happens later in the series and kind of acts like a teaser of the direction the series can go.
I think that the bible episode is amazing for the exact same reasons you gave for the bigger fish episode, but with the bible episode it felt like the first time you get a real glimpse at who Spenny is when he throws his holier-than-thou attitude out the window for the movie deal. I used to have sympathy for Spenny when I first watched the show, but after that episode I felt like Spenny kind of deserved a lot of the harsh treatment he gets from Kenny. Kenny shows throughout the show that he'll still look out for Spenny when things get too out of hand like in the octopus episode but Spenny shows the opposite.
The imitate episode is great but I always hated the judgement at the end. I feel like Spenny should have won because he actually imitated Kenny, whereas Kenny never really tried to imitate Spenny.
The arm-wrestling episode doesn't get enough love IMO, its clever by Kenny, the kid embraces the spirit of the show well and the ending arm-wrestling with the real Spenny is hilarious.
I completely agree with you on the who can episode. IDK why this one gets so much hate, its a fresh format and, for me, it's a great representation of the show as a whole. It's organized chaos, and the massive scheme just to get Spenny to do a simple thing is hilarious.
You're spot on with the bigger idiot episode. Even at the time it was a pretty poor bit that just goes on for way too long.

I think you should give Blindfold another chance. The reason why it’s one of my favorites is because of how simplistic it is. I don’t feel that bad for Spenny because all he put himself in that position honestly lol, and all he has to do is take it off
Also Parent i find funny because of how seriously Spenny takes it, and how shocked he is when Kenny messes with the dolls.
I don't feel bad for Spenny, I just don't really buy into the narrative that he is (or he thinks he is) being tortured by someone other than Kenny. It's not setup very robustly and they picked the wrong guy to act like he would be doing it (in my opinion).
@@Spamerica Personally I don’t think that really matters because Spenny has his blindfold on when he first meets Ben. He may have known him before the episode, but there’s no evidence of that (unless handcuffed was shot before?). So at least in the context of the episode, Spenny being fooled into believing it’s Ben makes enough sense, given he can’t actually see him.

I recently met Kenny and Spenny after a live show. Kenny asked me what my favorite show was, i answered "Who Can". (Better Emperor). Kenny looked genuinely shocked and said "Me Too!!".

In defence of the Gay Guys episode, though it is monumentally cringey, you really do get an enormous psychological glimpse into Kenny and Spenny's worldviews.
Spenny, the nominal "straight man" (pardon the pun here) who preaches ethics, is more than willing to lie to the face of a stranger (Steven) over and over in order to win.
Kenny's deviousness is on full display, and he appears to have won but he overplays his position and that causes Steven to split. Had Kenny exercised a little more restraint, he'd have won.
It's a difficult episode to watch in terms of enjoyment, but from a clinical perspective you really see how they both view other humans in the context of competition (a means to an end).

great analysis and definitely brings some new interest to episodes i personally didn't really think were that interesting on first watch. surprised you don't like the black guys episodes. unfortunately all the kvs videos are private for now, here's to hoping kenny will use his genius to bring em back up again soon
Good insight on the episodes. I think demographics plays into these ratings quite a bit. For example, I think someone who watched the series during original broadcast on CBC or showcase in Canada would have totally different episode ratings then someone who found the series more recently on youtube. Some of the episodes that were in heavy rotation on tv may be flawed but definitely have a huge nostalgic factor to them (Van for me is a top tier comfort rewatch). I think parent and bllind fold are rated so highly is because they are most memorable to someone who may not be super into or familiar with season 1. This also could explain the low ratings for kids and beauty pageant. Concert being B- shits on this logic though, that one is mind boggling.
Some great points. I could have asked some of this as a follow-up in the form.
My top episodes:
Pro Wrestler...Yarp Yarp and the Iron Sheik, I laughed out loud through the entire thing. It has a great story, cool twist and lots of creativity from both guys.
Fart...Obviously.
Smoke Weed...A feel good episode. Knowing how good their friendship can be makes all the other episodes more meaningful. I watch this straight after Beer to see the contrast.
Chicken Coop...Very interesting episode, I love Kenny's anti-abortion speech, Spenny's interaction with the chicken, and Kenny's skits.
Sixty-Nine...I love that by the end both guys were getting destroyed by the crew, that is an interesting dynamic.
I also want to give a mention to 'Who Do Black Guys Like 1 & 2", even though most of it is cringe and almost unwatchable, Kenny in blackface and the editing that he did to make Spenny look bad is one of the most cunning and funny Kenny moments in the show.
These are some great picks. I also like that you picked some S5 and S6 episodes, I feel like people don't love those seasons.

Can you do a video on the breakthrough entertainment videos? There's so much different edits in those, the who is funnier episode mentions Kenny telling him he has gonorrhea not aids.
After all these years I didn't see who can lift more wieght with their genitals. I don't know why it got deleted. There was no nudity. Hate to be cliche, but we live in a PC culture. I miss the wild wild west of youtube.
The first episode I usually show is Dance. It is simple enough, shows the premise of the show and just how loose the competition rules can be, shows how dorky and try hard purist Spenny is, shows how cunning and cleverly deceiving Kenny is. Watching it for the first time with the reveal of the "shoes" really seems to make people laugh very hard.

Nah, I’ve watched every episode multiple times and who can is the only one I watched twice. Hated it the first time I watched it, but gave it another chance a few years later and still didn’t find it funny at all
i like the rapper and gay guy episodes. Survive in the woods is also great, its not the funniest, but it is one of the realist
I love the woods episode tooo. Neither can fight, but that makes it even better. Also the spineballs or whatever they're call getting thrown in spennys hair was something small but funny.

I sincerely hope you plan to continue making videos. This channel is bar none the best KVS analysis and content I've encountered. The quality of these videos is just so high. I imagine how long it would take to do videos like you've done but I'm still holding out hope that there is more to come. 🍻
That's very sweet. I have plans! I just prioritized life for a while, but I think just about every day about coming back.
I'm here to prove your point that there is one person who is a die hard fan of every single episode, because "Play" is in my top five episodes, maybe top three, I think it's such an awesome and absurd personality showcase and it's so fun, though I acknowledge it suffers from Kenny and Spenny being so separate. Spenny's tryhard trainwreck next to Kenny's absurd black comedy is hysterical to me. I would pay to see a full version of Kenny's play "Things are Looking up!". Would love to have taken this survey to defend Play's honour.
Brilliant work as always, the way you conducted and compiled the survey to get a holistic view of fan opinion on these episodes was genuis. I'm so glad you realsed this as a comprehensive video to explain the nuance of the survey, like how some episodes will be scored lower than perhaps they deserve because they have been viewed by less people or are sandwiched between superb episodes in a season and won't be anyone's favorite, I think you interpreting and explaining the results in video format is so much more effective in explaining the complexity of this show than if you had only realised the raw data or the teirlist or something; you've got a gift for making the absurdly complex simple to grasp and compelling to watch. You've also convinced me to re-watch a few episodes and give them another chance, you made some really compelling cases for why episodes that I don't love are actually great, so I'll be giving them another shot thanks to you. Can't wait to see what you and the KVS community do next!

One note about the video, I felt that the background music was a little too loud and during the loud parts of the piano, it was a little hard to pick out what you were saying. Also I know this video was meant to be a lot more casual but I think having some live video examples/footage from the episode with examples of what you were talking about, would have helped illustrate the point a lot more (But again, maybe you just meant for this to be very casual).
If you're looking to do more analysis type videos, I think it would be interesting to look at Kenny's and Spenny's ventures past KvS (mainly looking at Triumph of the Will and Single White Spenny). I've been binge watching a lot of Quinton Reviews lately and some deep analysis on the background of the shows would be very interesting. Just a thought.

Your take on the imitate episode is spot on. I lost 2 potential fans before I realized that I know these 2 jackasses. It's hilarious watching their own personality try & take on the other guys traits.

for me it was the who can hold their poop in their pants the longest. classic, want a teenage boy to like the show, show them this episode first

Loved the video. Although i do disagree with most of your opinions on the episodes. Most of the ones you said you like but they were ranked low are not rewatchable like the other episodes imo.
I’ll also add 27:43 as devils advocate, I think it’s important to recognize the nuance of episodes where Spenny actually tries and Kenny avoidance to be uncomfortable backfires. But I may have commented that before here so as consolation, the officer in this episode is famous in my eyes atleast for playing the idiot who tried to bring down a transport plane full of 3 former military men on Mayday. They all somehow managed to not only survive a vicious surprise attack with a harpoon gun but also subdue him and land the plane safely. So I actually like this episode but I’m biased haha.
I admit though it’s one of the only shark jumping episode where CLEARLY both Kenny and Spenny are aware of the same ruse playing out. It feels by far the most “scripted”. This show hinges on suspending that disbelief and imo this nearly ruins it. It’s clear kenny flat out refuses to do it so they come up with this situation that depends on kenny believing Spenny actually buys sebe imitation of the cringe rapper haha it’s all a bit much with Spenny’s overacting. Also get an unashamed N Bomb for no reason haha

My biggest issue with this show is figuring out "which episode is best to get new faces into the show"
For a long while I'd settled on who can be homeless the longest , but the humiliation of making them kiss might be offputting to some, and wasn't a good example of a satisfying humiliation.
The perfect episode should showcase both their personalities, and how they mesh, but not require any knowledge of either of those things. It's been a struggle, so I'd be curious what everyone thinks the best episode to show to the unaware would be.
Is having them kiss the humiliation for Homeless? I think it's Spenny getting knee'd in the groin, right?
I think a good episode to show would be something mildly tame but clever in S1. Actor, arms, kids, or concert.

I do have maybe 5 - 10 other KvS ideas I'd love to do, but I never intended the channel to be KvS exclusive. They should also have a similar tone- me overexplaining stuff at length and making jokes occasionally. Reality shows, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast and Adult Swim, some practical joke stuff that I will document, internet cryptids... I forget.
dang, what happened to the play episode? I recall spenny doing a sort of 17th century with white wigs and terrible french accent and kenny just doing something surrealist and ..weird

Agreed, that little skit is so brutally uncalled for (in a great way). When I first watched the Xmas episode, I also was confused because he did look so much like Spenny in the other bits.
